I agree 100%. There is no way with the body of work we have seen from him that he is worth the 8th overall pick. But the problem comes from the fact that there is NEVER going to be a QB worth the spot you are picking because QBs are overpriced in the NFL. If you wait until a QB falls to you that is worth the pick you have to use, someone ahead of you will pick an undervalued QB just because they understand you HAVE to over pick QBs in the 1st round or you will NEVER get one.
What I know is that we have been waiting since 83 for a QB to FALL to us in the first rd. Almost 30 years, and it will be 30 more if we just WAIT on one to fall. I will say this, I would be shocked if we take him and we are sitting here next year this time feeling better than what the jags feel now after reaching for a first rd QB. Tannehill WON'T be good the first year. But if the FO feels he is worth the reach then I am on board, and if they take a pass on him I am good with that also. But we have to take a QB in rounds one or two, and keep doing it every year until we find one. Otherwise whats the point?? I personally think Weeden is the 2nd best QB in the draft, and will probably put up the best numbers of ALL QBs this year depending on where he goes. But he has roughly half his NFL shelf life behind him. Not sure what kind of value I would put on that. Would not be offended if he was a dolphin however. He has the best mentallity of any of the QBs. He talks exactly the way Marino did. He is the most confident of any of the QBs including Luck. If not for his age I would have him 1B to Lucks 1A. I also think Wilson is highly underated, and a great fit for the WCO. Wilson was the highest rated QB last year and only threw 4 picks all years. He also threw down field better than ANYONE.
So I am not against picking Tannehill and not for it, but we have to get a QB.
I agree with your statement except for the bolded parts.
I think the media "experts" overvalue QBs. I think that some GMs, especially the "wheeler dealer" or "bean counter" guys who aren't "football guys" may overvalue QBs. I think that some owners may interfere in the draft process. I don't think that most GMs overvalue QBs.
It's also possible to get decent QBs outside of the top 5 or the top 10. Pitt got Roethlisberger at #11 in 2004, the Pack got Rodgers at #24 in 2005, the Donkeys got Cutler at #11 in 2006, and Baltimore got Flacco at #18 in 2008. Last year, Cincinatti got Dalton in the second round, and while the jury is still out on the 2011 QBs, he took his team to the playoffs.
I think more 2nd and 3rd round (and lower) QBs would have more success if their teams took their development more seriously. A lot of these kids taken later in the draft are inexperienced and/or have been poorly coached. If they were given the same amount/quality of attention from position coaches that teams give to other developmental players, more of them might actually develop. Unfortunately, unless they're thrown into the starter's role like Brady, Cassell, and Schaub were, they usually don't get much help on fundamentals as well as nuances.
The problem with taking a QB in the first three rounds every year "until you get one" is, how do you know if you've got one if you keep throwing away the guy you drafted the previous year before he gets a chance to show what he can do? It generally takes players about 3 seasons to come into their own, and that's more true of QBs than of many other positions because QBs, at least those not taken in the first round, don't even play for their first year or two. How many QBs are you going to keep on your roster? How are you going to determine which one or ones you're going to dump in you've got two who haven't played in a game yet but it's time to draft another one.
Whether you draft a QB in a particular draft or not should depend upon the QBs available when your turn comes up in each round. If one you think is BPA at that pick, then you take him, even if you have a solid starter. If there's nobody that "right" at that round, then you take somebody else. There's only 7 rounds in the draft, so you are NOT going to be able to pick one of each position in every draft.
