In the last preseason games, Cam Wake has been playing strongside OLB and Jason Taylor (and Koa Misi) is playing weakside OLB which is the blitzing side.

This is why Cam Wake was doing so much coverage against the Bucs.

In out 4 DL Dine and Nickel, we are using (from left to right) C Wake, P Merling, J Odrick and J Taylor.

As good as Cam Wake is against LTs, he is known to kill RTs. That four man rush has been very good. We are also running a number of twists both from a 3-4 and 4 DL line.

95% of the time it is the same move. the DT/DE pushes to the right and then Jason Taylor quickly steps to the left and runs straight up the middle. One reason this is looking good is because J Taylor is a speed rusher and the LT playing against him makes a step back and left on the snap of the ball.

So far Jason Taylor is often unblocked because the LT cannot shift over in time.

This is a example of some things I think Nolan is doing. He has not only put players in their natural positions, he has plays to make the best of what they do.

That is why Jason Taylor is now playing weakside OLB and RE. Because he has been a All Pro doing it.

Our four man rush the use of Wake and Taylor on the outsides and then Merling and Odrick as fast pass rushing DTs reminds me some of what the Giants did against the Patriots is their superbowl.

On the play where QB Josh Freeman runs for good yards but was brought back due to a holding penalty, Paul Soliai pushed the Buc center back into the QB. That is when the hold happened. To stop Soliai from sacking QB Freeman, their center grabbed Soliai from behind.

We have one of the best DL rotations we have ever had.

I am pretty sure Wake played there all of last year except for the few time they move him around. He seesm to get around the corner quicker from the left and since most team the RT is a bit slower of foot than the LT it's a great missmatch.

as long as he produces they could put where ever they want

he is a linebacker, he has to play well in coverage. we all know he can rush the passer, he needs to work on coverage; so thats what they are doing with him in game like situations. no big deal

I will say one thing about this, Howie Long.

If you remember Howie and what he did for the Raiders it was special. Long lined up at every position along the D-line and it caused hell for the offensive line the calls/adjustments they had to make. If Nolan uses Cam in this fashion, kudos to him for realizing that confusion leads to big plays, and Wake is possible of playing either side and coverage as well.

I thought the same thing when i saw him dropping into coverage.

That and run stopping have been things the coaching staff want him to work on. Would rather him work on it during preseason then in the regular season. Nolan will put Wake into the best position to succeed on the field by moving him around. Nolan did it last season and he did it for Elvis Dumervil while in Denver. Not to concerned with Wake's limited impact so far.

We have to see how much Jason Taylor still has left in rushing the passer, to see if we can confuse teams becuase we know everyone is going to be focused on Wake's Pass Rushing,

Cam Wake played a lot on the strong side last year too. If you have a weak RT, it's always good to get an elite pass rusher some matchups against him.

i think we brought in jason taylor so we can play in the nickle more against the patriots.. our defense can play any style of defense... we could be a top tier 4-3 or we can be a top tier 3-4... we have the makings of a GREAT DEFENSE... has anyone else noticed how little we have been randy starks? I feel like he is about to be traded... We have enough depth so, im ok with the trade. we need to strengthen other areas of need. if we dont trade starks then we still have a top tier dline..
anyways, lol...
we can play against any teams strength now.. if they want to pass, we have 2 of the best coverage linebackers in the game and we have an elite pass rusher.. spread it out, and we can compete! we couldnt handle the spread last year because we didnt have a competent 4-3/ nickle defense... now we do! oh, and if we go dime package... we would then have benny sapp, will allen, sean smith, vontae davis, yeremiah bell, reshad jones, karlos dansby, cam wake, jason taylor, randy starks, and jared odrick in the game... now tell me who could throw on that?

Cam Wake does his best pass rushing from the strong side, did it last year as well. On obvious passing downs he rarely comes from the weak side. It should be better for Jason Taylor who's better from the weak side.
