Is Clyde Gates Ready?

He's shown more in preseason that Ted Ginn ever did. I think he will contribute early and often.

6 times in the first half of 4 preseason games, C Gates beat both press coverage and a safety deep and was open and pulling away. Chad Henne missed him 5 times, Matt Moore hit him once.

What really amazed me about C Gates is that all 6 times the deep safety thought he had good position on the play and the Gates blew past him into the open. IMO, C Gates cannot be covered one on one.

Our coaching staff has been force feeding him on the Split End position where he will most run long streak patterns. Another thing I say was that D Bess owes C Gates $100.00 per catch because Gates was really opening the field for Bess and everyone else.

IMO, it comes down to if Chad Henne can hit a open Gates for a TD at least every other game. C Gates scored one TD in preseason (no one caught two TDs). But he could of scored 4-5 TD's if the ball had hit him in stride.

P.S. He is ready to rock.

This is not even close to being true. For the preseason, including second halves of game, playing against backups and scrubs, Gates has been open deep and thrown to 6 times. One was complete from Moore. One from Henne was incomplete because a defender got away with holding Gates' left arm and he couldn't make the one handed catch. Henne overthrew him once, and Moore overthrew him 3 times.

I will be interested if marlon moore is in for this game cus i think they have a plan for gates and moore to be in at same time and go deep both sides where henne just picks the best matchup.

You need to watch the games again and pay attention. C Gates played with the first team offense till the 4th game. He was the starting Split End in the FIRST half of games. Chad Henne was his QB most of the time. The WRs were Marshall, Gates, Hartline and Bess.

After the first team got off the field, C Gates did play some but it was mostly Wallace/Moore and others. C Gates is being practiced and played in preseason games as our coaches expect/hope him to be a big part of our offense.

The reason Matt Moore has the one long completion to him is because in the 4th game against the Cowboys, Moore started at QB. In that game, C Gates again started at split end and Hartline started and played in the slot till the half.

That's 9 more routes than Teddy Ginn can run.

Gates knowing 9 routes is more then enough for him to make a impact.

I believe he's actually referring to what they call a "takeoff" route aka a 9 route. Just a "run deep" route

Tampa game, between two defenders, right in his hand from what I remember. I think another he just didn't even look back.

I watched this play maybe 25-30 times frame by frame. If the pass had been perfect, Gates might have scored but the ball was maybe a yard short and a yard inside.

If it had been only the corner trying to cover him, a more experienced Gates might been able to slow down, turn inside and catch it perhaps falling to the ground. However, the safety was coming hard from the middle of the field (the pass was down the sidelines) and was two yards from where the ball was coming down.

This was the only time that Henne's underthrew him on a long pass. I also look at this play as another example of Gates meeting a corner deep again and once again, the safety was not deep enough.

Actually, you need to pay more attention to the games. Chad Henne had 4 incompletions against Atlanta, the INT off Fasano, the INT where Bess ran the wrong route, the miscommunication with Hartline, and a drop by Bess. Henne had 3 incompletions against Tampa, a drop by Bush, a drop by Bess on a bubble screen, and the one to Gates where Gates got one hand on the ball but the defender was holding his other hand. Henne did not play against Dallas. So, according to you, then you believe that Henne overthrew Gates 5 times in the first half of the Carolina game. Sorry, it didn't happen. He overthrew him once in that game.
