Some players definitely own their parts, but I think we are seeing bad coaching. Not so much from Sparano, but from Henning and Paul P, players need to make the tackles and catches regardless but are they being put in the best positions to succeed?
On offense:
Clock management - was terrible last night and it was a problem last year as well, does it have to do with Henning being in the booth and not getting the plays down in time or is it that he is taking too long to make up his mind?
Play Calling - for 90% of the game i think we had a good offensive game plan but we have seen in the past that Henning makes some calls that make us say WTF. With a little over 2 mins left and down by 4 on our own 24 calling two running plays???? huh? The 3rd down before our last field goal on the 30ish yard line calling a running play on 3rd and 6??? I understand not wanting to turn the ball over but you at least attempt a short safe pass (which we all know Pennington is a master of) and if it misses you still have 4th to kick the FG and if you get it you take more time off the clock and have a chance to score a TD, but running the ball here your making Carpenter kick another 45+ yard field goal from the infield dirt and giving Manning the ball back with 3 mins and 3 timeouts.
No threat of a deep pass - Listen I know Pennington is not the best deep ball thrower and will never be Manning or Brady in this department and this subject as been beaten to death, but at least attempt some deep plays to give the other team the illusion that you will at least try it. Pennington has made some great deep throws before (see the Patrick Cobbs 53 yard TD out of a Wildcat Double Reverse last year against Houston, and that amazing 40 yard flea flicker to Ted Ginn in the back of the end zone with two players draped all over him against Seattle) The deep ball will never be a constant staple with Penningtion but to say we cant at least try a couple times a game is crazy. The Colts had no fear of the deep ball last night at all because we didn't even attempt one all game.
Defense - Why can Rex Ryan come in and blitz every play against Tom Brady and get at least 1 or 2 guys in his face consistently, do the Jets really have that many better players on D than we do? What happened to the exotic blitzing schemes we heard about in camp? We have had no pressure at all With JT and Porter on the edge we should be able to come up with something, i dont know about you all but i hate that formation with Ferguson and Solia/Merling lined up at DT's and JT and Porter lined up as hands on the ground DE's we ran that with Capers in 07 when we went 1-15 Porter is not effective with his hand on the ground lined up on the Tackle.
Coverage Scheme - what is up with our 3-4 version of the Tampa two? Even the announcers last night noticed it, we are running a 3-4 but have our Safety's playing deep while the corners and linebackers are left in man coverage this leaves the middle of the field wide open, the 2 safety deep scheme needs to be run out of a 4-3 with a great coverage MLB to cover the short middle we all saw what happened on the first play with Clark right up the middle blowing by Adyodele and pretty much owning us all game by running across the middle all game with either Crowder or Adyodele lined up man on man with him also Wayne even ran a few plays out of the slot to take advantage of the middle being open.
In closing the player needs to do their jobs and make tackles, catches and cover, but the coaching staff has to put them into positions to succeed. Running a defense where you have 2 ILB's who are not good in coverage man on man against guys like Dallas Clark and Tony G makes no sense, and maybe our tackling problems come from Tony's no bringing guys to the ground rule in camp, yes you to try to avoid injuries as much as possible but not at the expense of horrendous tackling during the season.
