Bess caught 17 passes for 140 yards in the first three games, but his production has slowed down drastically over the past four. Since Chad Henne's taken over as the starting quarterback Bess hasn't contributed more than 18 receiving yards in any of the past four games.

What's worse is that the Dolphins' slot receiver has had a fumbling problem over the past two weeks. He's fumbled three times, but fortunately one never counted because the Jets didn't review the play courtesy of a great rush job by the Dolphins.

"This thing all of a sudden popped up in the last couple of games. As far as confidence I think Davone is a pretty confident football player. I would hope that he has a short memory, that he can put it behind him, but it isn’t so much just putting it behind him," Sparano said. "You have to work on some of the fundamentals; you have to be conscious of some of the fundamentals in those situations. When something like that happens, it is a little bit like disease and I think the only way you get it out of your system is you go back and you concentrate on the fundamentals and get things done in practice the right way and then it will carry over.”

I hope Bess comes around, to tell you the truth im not to worried about his recent struggles.

Well, technically, in order to have a sophomore slump, you have to have an impressive freshman (rookie) campaign. Bess did okay last year, but by no means were his numbers impressive. Having said that, I think he'll be fine.

No, we just wanted to show the Jets we could beat them with one hand tied behind our back.

Err....?

Bess finished the regular season third among NFL rookies in receptions (54), behind two second-rounders—Denver's Eddie Royal (91) and Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson (62). His 54 season receptions is the second most in NFL history for an undrafted rookie (behind only Wayne Chrebet with 66 catches in 1995).

He also had a 72% catch rate last year, which was in the top 10 in the league. Profootballfocus ranked him 9th among all receivers overall in 2008. He was damn good, so yeah, he's in quite a bit of a sophomore slump.

Also, he had only one fumble last year, as kick return man.

He had 54 catches, which is impressive, sure. But for how many yards? Like 500?

He was solid, but he wasn't AMAZING.

And being ranked 9th because of his catch rate means absolutely NOTHING. He wasn't the 9th best anything last season, unless we're talking about rookies.

I'm not trying to **** on the guy, but he's completely overrated by half of everyone on this message board.

The profootball focus ranking takes many factors into account. Certainly his catch rate helped his ranking. YAC, drops, TDs, averages, etc. all factor into the ranking.

Take a look at the ranking for 2008 for yourself:
http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_...e=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

Compare him to the other receivers on the list around his ranking. A few things jump out.
- He was NEVER penalized.
- His catch percentage, as mentioned, was very high.
- His YAC per reception (5.0) was pretty high and comparable to many other very good receivers
- He had a low number of drops (5)
- His blocking rating is pretty good (not sure how they calculate that)

What more do you want from a guy? Sure, he doesn't have the athleticism of larger, faster receivers, but all you can ask from a receiver is for him to make the most of each throw you target to him. Davone Bess did that. He's our fricken slot receiver for pete's sake and as a rookie, performed VERY well. Now you can make the argument that he will not get any better, has a low ceiling, and that's absolutely fine and may be true...but again, he's our slot receiver. I don't understand how the guy is overrated and he definitely has taken a step back (so far) this year.

We can play semantics over whether he was 'solid' or 'amazing', but in my book, he couldn't have done any better in his ROLE on this team, and that earns my admiration.

It's not a slump, it's called Henne need to stand up in the pocket and deliver the ball, everybody on the fins team is in a sophmore slump, becaue this is not a passing team, yet.

Chad Pennington was a dink and dunk QB, so alots of those catches were 10 to 15 yards downfield to D Bess. Chad Henne is not a dink and dunk QB.

It honestly looks like this whole unit was so used to playing with Penny that they are having trouble with Hennes passes.
It should be fixed by now but its not.
Ginn, Bess, Fasano, even Ronnie have had some drops since the change.
Cam just has solid hands and Hartline is a rook. Im not saying that is why but its odd.
I just hope everyone realizes the Jets have a GOOD D.
The Wildcat will be better than last week NE does have that kind of D at all.
We looked bad last week but that was Hennes first start and the Jets are no joke.
I just hope the D can get off the field.
The O line should handle

Bess basically cost us the New Orleans game and could have cost us with this Jets game, with not only his muffed punt that completely turned the momentum... but then that fumble that luckily we got to the line quick before they could challenge... his drops and fumbles have been killing us and maybe he needs to sit on the pine a little more to get his head straight...

I think this has more to do with confidence than anything.

More confidence, as a matter of fact. He had a good rookie season, he probably came into the offseason with a chip on his shoulder (only keeping that mentality to himself though) and carried that on to this season. I think he feels he can make bigger plays now and so he's not having the whole scared rookie attitude where he knows if he messes up, he's gone. As a result, he's been a little more careless with the football. He just has to get himself back down to earth. That's what I think is going on.

He'll come out of it. I've seen every game he's played in since he was a freshman at Hawaii. Slumps happen to everybody.

To be honest I'm disappointed both Bess and Camarillo aren't getting more touches. Im not sure it's because they dont get open, or they don't have their number called, or if there is more of a focus on Ted Ginn.

Bess in a slump.. Id say so. partly because of his drops, and fumbles. Camarillio simply needs more touches.
