Nobody wants to talk about it and the league is scared to death to think that it could happen. The last thing the league needs is a debacle like that. Penningtons words after the game were, "I tried to call timeout with nine seconds left in the half and Ed didn't see me, and he apologized," Pennington said. "He said he was focused [downfield]. He thought there may have been a turnover.
"So he was looking down the field at the end of the play, and I said 'Well, I'll just have to come up and tackle you next time or something,' maybe give him a forearm right in the chin."
Hochuli has endured a rough year with several botched calls and was the subject of fine-inducing comments from Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter after the Week 6 loss to the Houston Texans.
"I understand they're looking at a bunch of different things, and next time I'm literally going to get up, whoever it is, right up in their face," Pennington said. "I was about 10 yards away and he just didn't see me, but I was trying to call a timeout".

It's time to start holding the Zebra's accountable for their Job. The Pittsburgh game is another example of just plain incompetence on their part and beleive me when they start f@#&ing with Vegas and the gamblers, somebody is going to get hurt. I think when the ne CBA comes up next year, one thing the players and the owners should agree on is making the zebra job in the NFL a "Full Time" Job and pay them accordingly.Make sure they train and go to school in the offseason. It is unfathonable that the most popular sport that makes the most money of any sport can't seem to get consistent officiating. The FANS pay too much money to support this league to put up with BS like that.

ya i agree, that call in the steeler game, obviously it wasnt as crucial from a game standpoint as the week 2 matchup between denver and san diego, but the call was just as bad. And the fact that the nfl tried to cover it up at first makes me wonder. it makes no sense why they would review it to begin with since the game was over no matter wat the call was, and then to overturn the ruling on the field made no sense. it seems like polamalou is involved in a lot of controversial plays , going back to that colt game in 2005 playoffs.

i don't know i mean... i think this situation is just like the challenge flag with nick saban a couple years back... it's your job to be seen by the refs, chad was 10 yards away from ed, if he was 2-3-4 yards away i would be raising my eyebrow but ten yards, if it was me calling the timeout i'd be screaming my lungs out and running towards the official

i'm not blaming chad either, but to say it's completely hochuli's fault is wrong IMO...

Everytime Hochuli refs one of our games we always get screwed. It's like he hates us. It doesn't really happen with any other ref, but always with him.

well first off i saw chad calling the timeout. and hochulli was right there. obviously chad felt there was eye contact. second, yes its chads job to make sure the timeout is called. but my question is ed hochulli so f'ing stupid that he doesnt realize in the situation miami is in that they wont be calling a timeout IMMEDIATELY after the play????????

I mean is there even one person out there that didnt KNOW we were going to call a timeout after that play? (if so please say something - i bet there isnt one person). if this is the case, being an NFL official - did "special ed" really not know they would call a timeout? f'in please!!! How convenient ed was "focused downfield" what the **** for????? THE PLAY WAS OVER *******, and there were no flags. DO YOUR JOB CORRECTLY IDIOT!

yeah i have to agree that ed should be well aware of the situation, but if he indeed thought there was a turnover, it was the least of his worries.... then again, did he say this because he blew the call ? we'll never know

where there is smoke there is fire, and ive just seen too much, and not just this year, but in previous years as well. Im glad the media is finally giving this some attention. I mean come on "tuck rule"???? please it was a flat out fumble. pats shouldnt even have been in the playoffs that year either cause we beat them, but jamar fletcher had a phantom 50 yard pass interference call at the end of the game that allowed the patriots to win (it was a TERRIBLE call). Miami should have won the division.

anyways, you do the math. pittsburgh was called for 13 penalties. 13. san diego had one call against them. 1. 13-1. AND the ref somehow blows a review that shouldnt have even been reviewed. then he ALSO blows the call, even AFTER he blew the review, and takes 7 points off the board. this is a HUGE problem and it happened just last weekend as well with arizona and san fran. in fact, I missed the end of that game, but the officiating was SO POOR in the beginning of THAT game, I wondered if something wasnt up, and that was WAY BEFORE the officials blew the end of that game. just kind of strange.

the refs need to be held accountable, take away a gamecheck when they screw up bad. suspend them for a game if they blow a call and make them pay for the replacements. How about full background checks for all refs...

In todays world, why can't a coach have a buzzer to signal the refs for a time out or a challenge. the coach hits button and the refs get signal, and the scoreboard could light up. two buttons, challange and timeout.

There's also a Referee next to Miami's coaches and HC can call a timeout..... its not all on Pennington.

Agreed. The ref cannot be expected to see everything. It's up to the players/coaches too make sure that they get the refs attention.

true ! but then it's not all on hochuli also ...

I disagree for this reason.

He specifically said he was worried about a turnover. Wasn't his responisibility. There were other refs on the field at the time closer to play.

He should have been paying attention to the QB who was calling for a timeout. PERIOD!!!!

Am I now supposed to believe that EVERY ref is looking SOLELY on where the ball is? If that's the case, how am I as a fan, or player, or coach suppose to feel confident that the refs are paying attention to the whole field and everything going on?

This also happened in the Green Bay game where they called an illegal forward pass on Rodgers when it clearly wasn't one. That play very well could have cost the Packers that game.
