Do we really need a big named backup QB??? We do still have Lemon and Berlin. Why dont we give them a Opportunity? Is it Necessary to get another 2nd QB who will do nothing but sit. (If Culpepper is Healthy.)

That is the problem it is unknown if Culpepper will be ready to go. so we need a viable player to start until then. IMO Lemon and Berlin would not give as good a chance to win as Collins or Harrington would.

I feel there is a need because the team wants to make a strong push this year... while at the same time not rush Pepper back. If we get someone like Kerry Collins (a kind of guy that wont win you games... but wont lose them for you either)... we wont have to rush Pepper back and can still do pretty well until he is ready.

We need a 2nd stringer with "real" experience albeit he may be avg. or slightly below avg. in ability. That's much better then going with a 3rd stringer or someone with absolutely no playing time experience at all, which chances are, would make 2-3x as many errors as someone who has previous starting experience. It is always preferable to have a backup with previous playing time. As of now, the market is limited to a few players.

Previous backup QBs with "starting" time include Lucas, Griese (former pro-bowler), Feeley etc. Berlin and Lemon haven't thrown a ball in the NFL. Maddox may be washing up towards the end of his career (but would still make good decisions) and Harrington never lived up to why he was #3 in the draft (if i'm not mistaken) but statistically....played like Fiedler / Frerotte with something around 68Tds to 62Ints or whatever it is (right around there).

For a mill a year....they're insurance well worth it as a backup to most teams that don't have a backup with any playing time at all or only 3rd string or practice squad talent.

I'm with the school of thought...

...that the second most important player on your team is your backup QB.

Imagine how disappointing it's been for me in recent years when the even primary QB has been so poor!!

If it can be done, within the constraints of the cap, then I'd say doooooo it. I like how Saban is attacking this off-season and I believe in his ability to assess priorities.

Also keep in mind we may not have had a perfect 1972 season if it wasn't for our back up QB.

Brock Berlin will NEVER start a game for the Dolphins.he wont even make the roster.:shakeno:

Short answer, yes we need one. All QB's are "big names" to some degree even veteran back-ups. It is the nature of their position. Lemon and/or Berlin may prove to have some gifts but we need someone who has proved it, at this level as insurance against Culpepper not being ready or against any eventuality down the road.

I like Harrington because of his youth and upside but Collins would be fine. I am less enthused by Maddox.

Keep in mind we are about to start throwing in off season work with only one arm, Lemon. That will not do!.

we cant afford to have a bad start to the season and possibly end up like lats year and miss the playoffs coz of a bad start. should pepper not bre ready we need a winner to start us of well its not worht the risk to go with crummy lemon and berlin and risk matches on them when it is possible for us to get a collins or harrington

We still need an 'experienced' QB ... regardless of the reports on how Culpepper is healing ... he won't be 100% until NEXT year -- IF EVER !!

So, we need someone who can lead the team for an unknown # of games THIS year.

This team has great potential THIS year - and it can't be constrained by a rookie or inexperienced QB.

IMO we need another Qb that can come in and be successfull. He doesn't necessarily need to be a high profile guy. If Culpepper isn't ready to go, or get injured you need to have a quality backup who can win games if needed.

Even when we had Dan The Man, we needed a backup. However, we've had bad ones, Gus or Sage would've been decent backups but they wanted at least to have the chance to fight for the position, but now we have Culpepper we only need a decent and experienced QB if something happens.

man, some disturbing avatars in this thread...jock's with #13 on um and nekkid mens... oh lordy. King Crowder is cool tho.

Yep, Earl the pearl is the reason we went undefeated, a good backup can be critical.

Basically: neither CLEO LEMON NOR BROCK BERLIN will EVER get a chance to be the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins. Nor should they! We MOST definately need to grab a quality backup QB. While we're not sure if Culpepper will be for the opener, I'm worried that if he isn't ready, we're gonna lose valuable games cause of our QB situation early in the year. NOBODY WANTS TO SEE THAT!! We better grab Collins right quick.

I hope Daunte's ready...I hope Daunte's ready...I hope Daunte's ready...I hope Daunte's ready... :hmmm:
