Is It One And Done For Clyde Gates?

With the limited spots available for WRs, he has to shine in the preseason games or he's probably gone. Wallace, Moore, Pruitt, Cunningham, Matthews and Hogan are breathing down his neck, not to mention the decent WRs that get cut by the other 31 teams. If Clyde shines in the punt return and kick return duties he can differentiate himself from the others because he's probably faster. But he's 26 and therefore older than most of his competitors.

With the top 4 apparently being Chad, Bess, Hartline, & Nanee it might be tough. However, it is true that Gates has speed that every other receiver I mentioned lacks. Say we carry six, and those first four make the team. That leaves: Moore, Wallace, Pruitt, Gates, and the three rookies. 2 spots for seven players? Gates odds are slim, but I think he can prove his worth during pre-season, no doubt about it.

Giving up on Gates would be a huge mistake. It will definitely come back to bite us. I can see it now, New England picks him and and he destroys us for years to come. One year under the crappiest coach ever doesn't mean we let him go. He needs some time. God I hope Philbin sees that. There are so many mediocre players on this team right now, we can find a spot for him on the 53 and give him a year with real coaching that his natural ability warrants.

It is great to have speed but if you can not run under throws and make great catches....... you have no place in the NFL. Clyde came up with BIM and that is so cool but Clyde has to step up and be a man and start showing the coaches why he should be on the team.

If we dumped him I've already envisioned the Steelers picking him up and grooming him to replace Mike Wallace. I really don't see Gates going anywhere. I mentioned a while back that I thought that Bess and Hartline had better watch themselves, especially Bess. Bess is apparently playing well and is faster this year, surprising to me but good for him- I'm still not a big fan. Hartline- the wolves are at the door pal, you'd better get healthy and step up.

Gates is coming into his second year, and no way I would give up on him. He showed some good stuff in returning kicks, and who would replace him?

As a WR, he has much to learn but, is getting open with QB's not getting him the ball. I have to give him another year.

which games were you watching. I remember watching him fall at first hit usually behind the 15 yard line. I dont want him anywhere near kick returns.

Maybe he was watching the Cowboys game when Gates took the kickoff just before half time out near midfield to give the Dolphins offense a chance to answer Dallas' touchdown. Maybe he was watching the Raiders game when Gates broke his only return of the day for 77 yards to set up an easy scoring drive.

I know Gates finishing 13th (24.8 yards per return) of all eligible kickoff returners doesn't impress everyone but to not want him anywhere near kick returns...

He came across like a whining child in his brief cameo on Hard Knocks.

"Who's going to support ME?"

"you know I can't go to Denmark to see you, it's cold there and I don't like the cold" (weather today in Copenhagen, sunny and 23 degrees celsius)

Hey, I can sympathize with that. I mean, he's far away from his lady, of course he misses her being there for him and the support she offers. If it weren't for my ladyfriend supporting me last semester, I might not have made the grades I needed to keep going in my program

Hey thanks for posting the clip i put of clyde i'am slickrickdog from youtube..the thing that might hurt clyde is his age and marcus thigpen and lamar miller on returns!

Also don't forget the bomb henne overthrew vs. The cowboys or panthers were he had the corner toasted for a easy td...or the long pass vs. The browns in the regular season when henne again thru the ball out of bounds but clyde still came up wit it.

No offense to those like CK and some others who have hope for this kid but fool me once shame on you, fool me twice and shame on me.

What I mean by that is this kid reminds me of the other burner we all had high hopes for.....you got it Ted Ginn Jr. Everything about Gates reminds me of Ginn from his build to his effort to he speed and his lack of contact. I mean the similarities are amazing to me so if the kid doesn't step it up a notch in preseason pack him in and move on.

I don't want another Jr. experiment that lasts three years and still sucks at the end. Maybe I'm wrong, I have been before but I think this kid lacks desire and that means he will never be special.

Would much rather have a 6'4" WR that runs in the 4.4s and can catch the ball than a 5'11" guy that runs a 4.3 that can't catch. That strategy of draft speed and lets hope he'll turn out to be a good football player didn't work for Ginn and it sure didn't work for the Raiders who continually passed up on more talented football players for track stars.

Bye-bye Clyde, don't let the Gates hit you on the way out.

Other than speed, I'm not sure how you can compare Gates to Ginn, Jr. Gates is about 20 lbs heavier than Teddy Bear and we haven't seen enough of Clyde to say he avoids contact. Then again, all smart WRs avoid contact at some point during games. How many times over his two seasons in Miami did you see Brandon Marshall fall down instead of taking hits from LBs and safeties?
