I'm not saying he needs to go in there like a fullback but com'on are you telling me the situation isn't similar? It doesn't feel eerily the same? I'm sorry I just don't have high hopes for Clyde the Glide.

Similar situations? They are both speedsters and inexperienced as wide receivers.
There's nothing to be sorry about. If you don't have high hopes for Gates, then you don't have high hopes for him. I myself am taking a wait and see approach.
I did that with Ginn. I'm taking the other approach this time, the "**** it if he gets cut I didn't expect much out of him anyway" approach, that way if he becomes the next 1000 yard Miami receiver I can be pleasantly surprised.

I believe if we are making the decision between Pruitt and Gates it has to be Gates. Too much speed to give up on him so early. No one else on the roster can threaten and open up the field like Gate's speed. I'm not saying he is going to be great but Pruitt is a developmental guy in his what 4th year. Gates needs time. It would be silly to cut him. I would carry 6 WRs which would be (Bess, Johnson, Hartline, Gates, Naanee, Fuller). Gates, Naanee both play STs well and could active on game days. Fuller can be a really good prospect if he develops to the 2010 form.

As the season progressed he did a much better job returning kicks. He needs to learn how to set up blocks and not just run as fast as he can up the gut. But dude does have potential on returns.

His age? He's only 26, same as Thigpen. Miller is 21 btw
The thing with Ginn, they wanted to make him into something he wasn't, an all around-type of receiver. Although he was willing to go across the middle, he was not going to make a living doing that.
To many fans, Ginn was never going to succeed unless he became a pro bowl receiver year in and year out. Even when he had an 11 catch game, he was criticized for the one (or was it two catches), he didn't make.
I know Gates wants want to be a complete receiver but I think he should be used similar to the way Wallace is used in Pittsburgh. The question is, can Gates use his speed to threaten defenders early enough to strike the fear of God in them to open the other routes that will help him succeed.
and that is the huge difference between a 1st round pick and a 4th round pick which is why the risk is lower and reward is higher with Gates. If you're a first round receiver and you don't make the pro bowl you are a "bust" no matter what you do.

You are forgetting about two of our best special teammers...Roberto Wallace and Julius Pruitt. Even if Fuller returns to 2010 form, he is still a longshot because he doesn't, atleast I don't think he does, play special teams. This is what will give Gates, Pruitt and Wallace the edge over him. Wallace also needs to stay healthy or he will not be here next year.

Yeah, I was watching those, and a couple of 39 yard returns, a 33 yarder, a couple for 30, and the 17 yarder on a punt. As a rookie KR, who had not done it before (as far as I know), he made mistakes but, the good outweighed the bad.
Last time I looked, being #13 was PHANTASTIC for a QB, and better than more than half the other teams for a returner. :)
Gates is 26, and entering into his physical prime. He is still learning. I would hate to see him gone. It will come back to haunt us. JMO
I remember a speedy wr project we picked off of waivers from little known Mesa state. He struggled his first couple of years with the phins but showed glimpses. We get rid of him and he becomes a probowl receiver with San Diego. Hope this doesn't happen with gates.

Wallace only played one game on ST's last year, and did nothing. Moore was the best, with Pruitt a close second. Not saying Wallace cannot play ST's, just that he did not have the chance. For me, I keep Gates, and one of the other three or, maybe Fuller if he is as good on ST's.
I believe that Philbin will be running 3 and 4 TE sets, has Clay as a hell of a weapon at H-back, and will be using our RB's as WR's to a degree. The #5 or #6 WR's are not gonna see the field much, other than ST's. Gotta go with Gates potential.
Roberto Wallace finished 4th on the Dolphins in special team tackles in 2010 with 8. The main reason Pruitt played special team last season was because Wallace got hurt...again.
