This is another topic which is subject to great debate amongst us fans. We all know how effective it was when it was first introduced in the 2008 season, but, how effective will it continue to be from here on out and should we base some or any of our draft choices on this one play alone?

I have a post about this topic up on my blog phins2phins.blogspot.com/2010/01/is-it-time-to-retire-wildcat.html
I would love to hear what you guys think about it and about the topic in general

we'll be best served leaving everyone guessing on what we're going to do with it IMO. make defenses prepare for it.

i don't want to use any more draft picks solely for the purpose of "developping" the WildCat though.

If Ronnie is here he will run the Wildcat since he cant run out of a normal formation.
If Ronnie is gone than no more kitty

It would make no sense to "retire" it.

Should we retire deep passes because we aren't successful with them? No..

The threat still has to be there. Retiring stuff like that just makes it easier on the defense.

GOOD ANSWER

when defences can't properly contain it, we should use it... like any other play in our playbook.

No one will ever convince me that it's not an effective running formation ... as for the pistol with pat white, well, that's a whole different story...

if he knew how to pass, it would become effective.

How quickly they forget what Ronnie did in 2007, before he was injured...again, running out of normal formations.

Ronnie seems to be the only one who can run it well. Pat White is too small and I don't want to ever see Ricky throwing another pass.....I think we probably phase it out as we get better players on offense. Maybe we could keep it around to use once in a while on a trick play or flea flicker, but I would not run it as much in the future.

He can run out of a normal formation just fine. Did you see 2007 before he got injured? He was the top rb in the league on rushing and receiving. You can't expect him to put up big numbers when his number of carries are inconsistent. He needs 25 or more carries. He gets stronger with the more carries he gets.

I like the Wildcat when Ronnie runs it, with Ricky in motion, Lousaka and Cobbs blocking, and Henne lined up at wide receiver. It's a great first down play, basically substituting a run with the added misdirection.

Everyone brings up one year with the main word INJURY in it.
ok so for less than half a season in 07 he ran the rock well.
What about before that..
What about since than.
The last two years with Ricky being able to find holes and break long runs out of normal formations have shown what Ronnie cant do.
I actually like Ronnie and hope he comes back for one more year.
But if you think he is going to lineup in regular formations next year and get 1,200 yards your fooling urself.

The year before than he gained over 1,000 yards in 13 games while splitting time with Ricky and the year after we unleashed the Wildcat.

Ricky long runs have come mostly from the Wildcat formation the past two years.

It's amazing how fast threads turn quickly away from what the OP may have intended and into bash/defend a player thread.
