I remember all the talk on this site about how Matt Roth is this big stud and a monster on the football field. The limited play I saw out of him, when he did play this past season, left me to wonder if he has a TON of developing to do. Previously it was speculated that Roth is the 2nd coming of JT on this site during camp last year. Any thoughts?

I wanted DE Justin Tuck.

No he is not a bust.Give him some time to adjust to the nfl style of play and under Sabans system. He started to progress towards the end of the season. He will be fine.go fins:dolphins:

He played really well at the end of the season

Not to say he will be great or anything, but to call a guy a bust in limited playing time as a rookie when he played decent is a rush

His arms are too short. He's short.

But he can still be a solid defensive end and it's WAY too early to call him a bust. He's strong and quick, and his motor never stops running.

I can't say he is a bust. I haven't played in the NFL anddon't know how hard it would be to master a pro-style defensive scheme but from what the other defensive guys said the new system was very expansive. maybe Roth didn't pick it up well. I won't call him a bust until he is at least 3 years in the league.

Eddie"Glass Jaw" Moore=Bust
Matt Roth= Rookie

he's adapting, his straight-ahead rushing style wasn't working too well. He's learning to fake now, some swim moves.. Saban will probably want him to be able to drop back as a linebacker from time to time. There is some definate coaching to do with this guy.
but he didn't get a ton of playing time because he was stuck behind a fairly deep defensive line squad last year. He seemed to really take to the coaching, and improved as the year went on. I'm sure we'll see more of him and Manny Wright this year.

Until then, the jury remains out.

Matt Roth is not short. He had limited playing time for the following reasons:

1) He was injured (not badly, but bad enough to limit his opportunities)
2) D-line is one of our strongest areas. He simply did what most rookies should do and that is learn behind guys like Carter, Holliday, JT, etc Remember, our other rookies had to play because we were so weak in those areas.
3) Roth is a good run stopper and the coaches focused on that area this year
4) His play did pick up at the end of the year
5) He may play better in a 3-4, especially with Capers coaching. We were in transition last year, but Capers will really turbocharge this defense.

I believe Matt Roth will eventually be a Jeff Zgonina type of player. Just my thoughts, no CONCRETE EVIDENCE.

Asking if Roth is a bust is as premature as asking is Ronnie Brown in the Hall of Fame...patience Grasshoppa

He was over hyped after the draft and people were thinking he was going to light the world on fire, truth is he was a rookie who was learning a new system and didn't have as many opportunities. Give him a couple of years before we go calling him a bust.

It's too harsh to call a player a bust after one year.

Maurice Clarrett = bust

Fred Gibson was a bust for the Steelers, a 4th round pick who couldn't make the roster.......yet a lot of Phin fans see a lot of potential in him.

Roth is a player who contributed, if only a limited amount, the entire year. I'd say about 50% of 2nd round picks contributed more, about 50% the same or less.

Do you remember when JT had one sack in '99.. Was he a bust ???

I also remember JT not being a top 3 round pick form Akron. No one expected anything from him. Roth was in a different class of expectations relative to his draft position and scouting report. The analysts said JT was too light and too tall to get in under the OL's. I know hindsight is 20/20.
