I don't think so but you never know. If the Parcells signs Long and then doesn't draft him it would be very ****ed up and I wouldnt know if I could respect him after it. Kind of reminds me of when we told Braylon Edwards we were gonna draft him and then drafted Ronnie Brown but I doubt it happens although I'd still rather have Chris Long over Jake Long.

This article is old before we had the deal done

LOL it can't happen--the team and the player have an agreement together that has been signed. Roger Goddell walking up to the podium to announce Miami's pick all but a formality now.

im sure the contract was contingent upon him actually being drafted #1. That way we can still trade the #1 pick.

Sounds like Hyde wrote that story before Jake Long signed his contract.
Consider: For about $31 million in guaranteed money, the Dolphins this winter signed free agent guard Justin Smiley, linebacker Reggie Torbor, defensive tackles Randy Starks and Jason Ferguson, receiver Ernest Wilford and quarterback Josh McCown.

The top pick is expected to cost that much in guaranteed money, with no guarantee of success.

THE DEAL IS DONE. the whole point of allowing the team that drafts first overall to negotiate is to get it out of the way. Jake long signed an official contract. He is a member of the Miami dolphins. The Rams are officially on the clock. On saturday Goddell will announce the beginning of the draft and then a min or to later after everyone has settled in, will announce that the dolphins have selected jake long. The dolphins can not trade the pick because It has already been made. by negotiating and signing long to the contract yesterday, the miami dolphins gave up their right to trade the pick or pick somebody else. Guys this is simple. THERE IS NO SMOKE SCREEN THERE IS NO HIDDEN MOTIVE. JAKE LONG IS A MIAMI DOLPHIN

At no point is a team prohibited from trading a player they own the rights to, barring a "no trade" clause or the NFL's trading deadline in October.

If anything, Miami might have ways of getting out of this before Saturday if they were so inclined. For example, if Jake Long burned down an orphanage tonight and walked into a police station and confessed.

We could have, if we wanted to, signed a dozen guys to a contract yesterday. Until we draft one, any of them could have been the pick.

In fact it IS impossible to not draft him. He is on the roster. We would have to trade him first.

Jake Long is a Dolphin the most we could do is Trade him after we draft him but we Have to take him with the #1 pick now

They can't trae the pick but they can trae Long.

What if Parcells makes a blueberry/ chocolate chip muffin on draft day and doesn't share it with anyone.....Now that would be ****ed up!

There are admitted gray areas here. If we're no longer on the clock because we signed Long, then the Rams are. But they aren't. At least, the NFL hasn't given them permission to negotiate with a player's agent yet. So they aren't. Which means we are... or are we?

Riddle me this: if Miami sleeps late and doesn't make it to the podium in time on Saturday morning, what happens next? Are the Rams first? Is Jake Long available to them if we don't officially select him? If they want Chris Long do they pay him like the first overall player or the second?

The fact is most of us don't know the answers to questions like these, but there are a lot of people acting like they do. You can tell them because they use a lot of capital letters, excessive punctuation, and get all hot and bothered when it's just a discussion among people who find the nuances of the draft fascinating.

Heck, even the NFL's attorneys would have to look a lot of this stuff up. They didn't have an answer for the Rams when they called them to see if they had permission to negotiate with a player. That inspires a lot of confidence in the process, doesn't it?

Jake Long is listed on the official roster. He is not draftable by any other organization. He is under contract.
