Is Replacing Five OL Starters a First in the NFL?

If Hickey is able to create a serviceable OL from this group in just one offseason I will give him some major props. This is a tall order, and a sense it almost seems like he was set up to fail do to the completely bare OL. Replacing an ENTIRE OL in one offseason is unheard of

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Bills last season or 2 season ago start a line with like 4 of 5 rookies? Of-course, everyone assumed they were going to be terrible and end up being very good.

I'm not aware of that...of course there are exceptions though...just many more failures...the bears struck it rich when they were able to sign their left tackle bushrod in free agency and get solid to high end play from their 1st and 5th round picks in Kyle long and mills at right tackle but they went for years with one of the worst units in football despite yearly trying to fix it...

It sounds easier than it is...

No problem at all if Hickey reads and follows this forum's advice. We sign Monroe or Collins at LT. Sign Dietrich-Smith at C, moving Pouncey to G or taking Z Martin at LG. Sign Asamoah at RG, and a cheap vet at RT to compete with our draft pick.

Easy, over and done. :)

Their OL last year has Pears, a FA from 2005, Glen a 2nd from 2012, Wood a 1st from 2009, Urbic a 3rd from 2009, and Legursky a FA from 2008.

Completely agree. Remember recently when Long and Carey were bookends and we never talked about the OL? That is how it should be.

For me, I used to enjoy re-watching games to see who had the better game between the two, and over 3 years, it was not as one sided as you would think. I miss those days.

Well maybe we have different views but I never saw Carey as having better games than Long. In 2008 and 2009 though I can agree it wasn't totally lopsided but Long was still the better player.
We got two very good years out of Carey and then all of a sudden he fell off the earth lol

In 2008, Carey outplayed Long by a bit in Jake,s rookie year. In 2009. Long returned the favor but, not by a lot. JMO

Damn, wish we were talking about how good our OI's were in comparison instead of what we now have, and have had. LONG & CAREY vs Mckennie, Martin, Clabo, and Columbo. I'm gonna be sick.

Im all in on keeping Pouncey.

He's guilty of being a moron and there are maaaaaany like him in all 32 locker rooms.

I wouldnt cut an all pro center for being a moron. 3rd teamer- in a heartbeat.

I don't agree that Carey outplayed Long in 2008 but that is the beauty of message boards

Just a small nitpick Pouncey is a pro bowl center not an all pro

Had to look it up. In 2008, Carey has an overall grade of 31.9, a 17.5 on the pass, and 10.6 on the run. Long has an overall of 29.1, a 12.4 on the pass, and a 16.6 on the run.

In 2009, Carey has an overall grade of 29.3, a 9.6 on the pass, and a 15.2 on the run. Long has an overall of 39.5, a 24.4 on the pass, and 10.7 on the run.

Damn, those were MUCH happier days for the OL. We had the best bookends in the NFL.

well u know im not about pff and their stats but those grades would never reflect that a lineman did bad.
I agree we had a good set of tackles for those 2 seasons

They were a "Dynamic Duo" and Carey, who I met from "THE U" was the reason I first started watching the OL.

Never was fan of him at LT but he was made to be a RT.Always thought early in his career he could have been a top guard.
Watching Clabo and Mckinnie at tackles late I the season definitely makes you wish we had at least competent tackles

There really isn't much difference between replacing 4 and 5. In both scenarios every OL will be playing alongside new people. I think this is a good time to flush the entire starting OL and let our new OL coach build his own line without any holdover starters. That means no re-signing Clabo or McKinnie, let Incognito, Martin and Jerry go, and trade Mike Pouncey. I get the feeling Pouncey's days in Miami are over and Ross will want him traded.

Then, go after a few choice FA's like one of Monroe/Albert/Veldheer/Collins for LT, maybe make a play for Alex Mack at C, and bring in a veteran RT like maybe Winston finally (he is a former Texan). Start a rookie at LG and another one somewhere on the right side and plug Garner or Brenner in as needed until the rookies are ready to take over.
