Unfortunatly i did not get to see the game on tv ... so i had to go by what the announcers were saying...and it seemed that it was howard getting burned by smith ,but now I read that it was Madison getting the coverage on smith... can someone who SAW the game tell me what happened to one of the best in the nfl?I always thought he was kinda slow especially the last few years .. is it his speed or recovery speed that is hurting us?

He's not losing it, it's already lost. It wouldn't be as noticable if he were being more physical at the line, or actually made a solo tackle from time to time.

He wasn't the only DB getting beat, but I think it's noticable when he does because we're used to him being so good.

I also hated the 30 free yards he gave up with unsportsmanlike conduct penalties...if you want to be aggressive lay out the ballcarrier for once, and not the guy walking away from the play or tackling him 8 yards out of bounds.

Steve Smith is extremely quick. He's a bigtime playmaker. Although, watching him fumble the punt was fun! Without him, Carolina would have gotten demolished. Smith had 170 yds receiving and 3 Tds. He was their offense, but I don't think it was a sign that Madison is washed up. Smith is a great player.

Has Madison lost a step? Most likely, but I think he is still in his game. Losing Surtain is showing itself. Nevertheless, Saban has it under control.

He lost that step a few years ago and it's being exposed with Pat not here. That being said he is still a good corner and did not hurt us with his play but rather his antics.

Steve Smith has unreal speed...Madison seemed to play man against him most of the time.

Why we play a cover 2 I'll never know..

But whatis more infuriating is how he list his COMPOSURE with 2 very very stupid penalties!

Did you guys SEE the game ?

Yes, of course. And to be honest, while Madison blew some major plays, and his unsportsmanlike conduct hurt the team, I walked away from that gaming with more assurance that Saban has it together. This guy has leadership that we haven't seen in a while. He'll deal with the Madison issue.

He's still a solid corner (and the best we have by far at this stage), but Steve Smith is just a special talent. Plus, it wasn't only Madison that was toasted by him.

Madison will take a step back this year w/ Pat gone, but he's still got skills. Let's face it, our secondary has holes that will be exposed from time to time. I'm sure Saban will do his best to keep these big plays to a minimum as the season progresses.

Having Will Poole about right now would be a big help!

Having Reggie Howard on the sidelines and not in the game would help us even more!!! That dude blows chunks!!

I had to talk myself out of creating a Madison 'sky is falling' thread.

I was livid over his play. I let everyone in my section know it. And by game's end they all were in agreement with me.

Forget Howard, we know he sucks, but he's a nickel back. He won't lose the ENTIRE game for you (for the most part). Sam Madison was trying to lose the game by his damn self. I focused on him every play. He got worked, and not just by Steve Smith. Every receiver that lined up opposite of him. He either gave crumby effort on his jams, gave up too much space in cushion (not just giving too much cushion, but running backwards/forwards while the play was starting), or just got plain toasted (turned around, inside, outside). He looked sooooooo bad. And his tackling. Ughh. Even worse, he was jawing with Steve Smith the ENTIRE game. The guy is having a career day, and you keep egging him on? You freggin suck, this guy is a pro bowler having that kind of day, and he never stopped the **** talk for one play! Then the penalties. Well they speak for themselves.

Thanks for letting me vent. I realize he is our only corner option. Well strike that. Hands down, the rookie is BETTER THAN him. And how refreshing. Damn aren't Saban guys great!!! But we must cut this overpaid POS in the offseason.

Thanks for allowing me to VENT. Glad I didn't start my own thread.

That game (and result) was INCREDIBLE. Dolphins are playoff bound one year removed from the Wannstedt ages (two steps beneath the dark ages). AWESOME!@@@@!!!!! go fins. Imagine Ricky back there 2 :goof:

No he didn't lose a step Steve smith is that good. I didn't like the unsporrtsman but looking back I would rather take the PI then allow smith to catch it and break it for 6 points!!!!

I think in reality Madison is at best a solid Nickel corner at this stage of his career. He cannot handle the stud WR's. I honestly think Daniels will surpass him this year if he hasn't already. I hope Poole can make it back this year. I realize this isn't a Championship team, but if we had solid corners I could definitely see 9-10 wins and a possible playoff birth. Teams will start exploiting our horrible DB situation with 3 WR sets starting week 4.

Badfoot, you're question about howard is also right. The thing is that he's not in on every play, but the momment he would come in, you are damn right he got burned. They would move smith allot to put him on Howard, and yea you know what the results of that were. I think they even mentioned something about the Carolina offense stating that they knew they could take advantage of Haward and would use it as much as possible. He looks completely out of his league out there. That's not saying that I am defending Madison though, as already a few have stated, it's way past the losing a step phase. He lost it a couple years back, and the utter dominance by Pat Surtain has been the only reason you haven't really realized it until now.
