We are currently ranked #26 in overall Defense, and #22 in overall Offense ... yet we're 3-0. I'm thinking, if we don't improve either ranking, this current success will be unsustainable over the long haul.

Am I missing something here? I know its a small sample size, but could it be that our special teams is picking up the slack?

Those Stats are based on yardage. What is the Defenses ranking on giving up points or Tds? What is the offensive rakning in the red zone or points? Those are the rankings that matter.

so we're giving up a lot of yards but not a lot of points (basically, severely bend but don't break)... and we're scoring a decent amount of points despite not gaining much yardage (typically, more yardage = more points)

wow, now I feel reassured because, apparently, "yards don't mean anything"

I don't necessarily think that the yardage totals matter that much. The team has been very good on third down both on offense and defense, so the low yardage doesn't indicate that we can't sustain drives. I suppose more than anything it indicates that we are taking advantage of good field position and likewise playing better red zone defense than midfield defense against opponents who have longer fields to work with.

I think it's simply performing well in the 2nd half, limiting penalties, and winning the turnover battle. I think teams should be wary of the Dolphins. We're not playing our best ball yet. I think the pass blocking will eventually stabilize, and our defense will become dominant once everyone is healthy again.

yes, those things also matter.

But to those who are saying flatly, "yards don't matter", I say, "you're wrong"... The stat will eventually catch up to you. Do you all really think the fins will finish the year where they currently are (1st place in the division) if they wind-up bottom 3rd in the league in both Defense and Offense with regards to yardage?

You can't score very many points with 0 yards on offense... and what are the chances you shutout a team if you give-up 400+ yards on defense?

The dolphins are 3-0 for making plays when they have to this is called being clutch!

I definitely agree with you in that its not sustainable to have that sort of production yardage wise throughout the year. However I personally think we won't finish in the bottom third after 16 games. We've played two very explosive offenses in the Colts and Falcons and our defensive rankings will probably dip a little further after Monday night, so id say our numbers are a little skewed right now. All you can do really is try and limit their possessions and shorten the game if you can.

As for the offense the o-line is really hurting our ability to move the ball down the field with authority. Though the run game has improved there is still little consistency. Add the fact that our pass blocking has been porous and T-hill's tendency to hold on to the ball too long and you've got yourself a sure fire recipe for 3 and outs. It really can't get much worse than what it is right now (hopefully) so I'm expecting some more scoring drives in future games.

Until these things happen, all we can do is put ourselves in a position to win late and let Tannehill do his thing. I really do think our best ball has yet to be played.

Thank you! This is a much better position than others who simply want to claim "yards don't matter... derp"

If your D is creating turn overs an making teams kick field goals while you are scoring TDs on offense then yes yards dont matter. If our O keeps putiing up over 25 a game while only racking up 200-300 yards then what diff does it make. Last I checked the score board reflected TDs, FG, and Safties not yardage.

Man who cares!!! this a young team, they have been playing against some damn good QBs who know how to dissect a defense, they should get better but enjoy the win, I though that there was 3 phases of a football game DEFENSE, OFFENSE, and SPECIAL TEAMS, so if that is the reason why we're winning then so be it.

I hear you, but there's a basis for saying yardage isn't the definitive stat of whether an offense is playing well or not.

Miami is 3rd in the NFL for 3rd down conversion. In other words, far fewer 3-and-outs than other teams. We're also top in the NFL for redzone efficiency.

What does that mean? Well, we're getting our business done with the minimum "wastage of yards" and giving them back the ball. This is reflected in us being in the bottom third of the league on time of possession in games. Consider that we're 3rd in the league for INTs, giving the ball back to our offense, and even still we don't hang onto the ball for long before we score. Credit our higher tempo offense with some of that.

So, big picture.
On the one hand, we're ruthlessly efficient. On the other hand, we're not putting up yardage numbers or eating up the clock. It's true this could bite us against other efficient teams. But compare to last season when we marched up and down the field but couldn't score TDs. I'll take this year's offense. I also believe that we'll move up the rankings as our run game beds in better (we reportedly spent very little time on Run O in preseason).

As for the D, it's only about preventing scores and finding ways to give the ball back to the offense. In those categories we're excelling. It's taking up quite a bit of clock time to do it, but when you have an efficient offense you don't need tons of time.

This is a sustainable system, in my opinion, yardage totals be damned. When we come up against other efficient offenses, it will be tested. The Falcons and Saints are up there on 3rd down completions also but are both have struggled on redzone efficiency. This could be where we win the game - giving them a ton of yards but keeping them out. All NOs TDs bar one have come from the hand of Brees, so we can gameplan for the Saints in the endzone quite well, I think.

Red Zone Offense and Red Zone defense keeping us afloat.
