I just read Sparano's opinion on Murphy's progress. I, like many fans, thought Murphy didn't impress and was headed towards imfamy. Here's the quote from a press release from Omar Kelly:

“When he came in, we took some weight off of him, then when he got down in body weight, we brought him back up the right way so his body has completely changed since the time that he walked in the building here," Sparano said. "He's much stronger now physically, without a doubt, and I think in a lot better shape, so I think we are going to see him take some steps forward here.”

With the injury bug hitting us at the guard position do you think there's hope for this player? The FO seemed high enough on his raw talents to move up in last years draft to get him, so they must see some potential. What are your thoughts? Any chance this kid comes in, rebuilt, and ready to take the starting guard position? Or is it too soon in his early development. I think i am correct in saying he only played one season in college at guard.

You never want to say never, but it doesn't look good. These things can turn on a dime sometimes. I remember it looked like Vernon Carey was a total bust after his rookie year and then his second year all the sudden Hudson Houck is vouching for him and putting him in at Left Tackle during preseason and when I watched him I saw a pretty damn promising player all of a sudden.

But so far I don't have a great feeling about him. I thought he should have been drafted in the 6th round in the first place, though I do understand it's their prerogative to draft him in the high 4th. It just means that I didn't see his chances being very high in the first place, and based on what happened over the course of 2008 as well as his still being down the depth chart and their still waiting for the light to go on so to speak, those already-small chances are dwindling.

At best he's down to 5-7% of being a starter by 2011.

I beleive he started at left tackle as a junior before being moved to guard as a senior...

I didn't think he really had any upside when he was drafted....

Maybe our new O-line coach can do for Shawn Murphy what Houck did for Carey. We can always hope.

I'll say "never" on this one. He's was drafted at the age of 25, and came from the state of Utah......and we already know how this story will end.

The problem with Shawn Murphy is he can not hit a curve ball, with Dale Murphy being his father and working on his swing? You would think.....

Sorry, you where talking football? I have little faith in this kid and feel he will not be on the roster in 2010. Please prove me wrong Shawn!!!!!

I think he's a PS guy this year. The good news is that he'll probably be able to sit there and we won't really risk losing him to another team. Doubt any other club would even look at him. What I wonder about with the PS is what if at WR, we put London there? Now he could get picked up by someone. Say we go with Ginn, Turner, Hartline, Camarillo and Bess and call it a day at five, does Brandon stay on the PS long or would someone scarf him up? Anyway, Murphy wouldn't have to worry about that I bet. :)

Smurphy sucks. If he could have stepped up like Thomas just remotely, we wouldn't of had to bring in 100 guards (Frye, Allemen, Mathis, McChesney, etc...) we took guys off other teams Psquads, and started them.. The signing of Berger burries him even further..
I bet JD Quinn beats out Murph, and if he does w/e, we still had a solid 08 draft.

Usually project players aren't drafted in the 4th round. Unfortunately, Shawn Murphy was. I look at Murphy the same way I have always looked at him. He's a project player and it may still be awhile before we all know what the team really has with him.

You "understand it's their prerogative to draft him in the high 4th"??
:yourock:
Hopefully they'll let you in a team meeting to expound upon your feelings about how they're wasting their time with Murphy.
