Is there Significant Dysfunction Within the Team?

Does the Martin/Incognito situation indicate a team culture problem?

I would think this staff, under this amount of scrutiny, is probably really providing serious leadership right now. Just an assumption.
I imagine so, but leaders among the players have to genuinely grab on to that and convey it to their teammates for a true culture to take shape.

Yeah, I honestly think so. Tannehill stepped up and claimed this team. Hartline showed real leadership ... even Clabo took up the mantel. These guys and others will embrace Philbin's culture because it is a structure they need in order to move past this and gain a foothold back to normalcy.

Plus, all I've heard is how much these guys really like Philbin, so this bond that has developed will manifest into a reflection of the Head coach's philosophy. Again, just my assumption based on what I've been witnessing and reading.

Only Phin-fans would say "No"...ask anyone else in this country....the answer if "Yes"...duh

Why worry about leadership,a lot of you wack jobs want to get rid of any player/coach/owner before he's been around long enough to be a leader...

And I agree, but is there any more semblance of the professionalism Philbin is trying to implement as a culture? There may be more unification right now (at least temporarily), but is there any more of the establishment and dissemination of the head coach's program via leaders among the players?
I think it may emerge in time. Teams who perform well over long periods of time don't establish their best player leadership over night. It's entirely possible that Incognito would not have been voted back in as leader next year, if the OL continued to play poorly this season.

This was a very early tweet from Martin.

Martin to Richie last week: “Just know I don’t blame you guys at all it’s just the culture around football…locker room got to me a little.”

So if locker room got to him a little, his parents and or agent are driving team Martin now.

I think it took a perfect storm to lead to this. It was everything from the four game losing streak, the record pace for sacks, the lack of rushing attempts, lack of leadership, mental health issues, the shuffling of the line midseason and the extremely jaded fanbase may have even played a role.

Great point. Appreciate your input here.

Hopefully Philbin is aware going forward of the need to "weed out" players whose behavior runs counter to the culture he's trying to implement while he's still trying to "establish the lawn."

When the lawn isn't yet established, you can't let powerful weeds go unattended, or they soak up the water and nutrients needed to get the grass to grow. Once the lawn is established, the grass crowds them out.

This is how New England has gotten players like Randy Moss and Chad Johnson to come in and out of there without much if any problem. The culture there is so strong that "weeds" like them are controlled.

Will be very interesting to see over time would an Incognito type be added to Philbin's roster, is he the type of player he wants, he did after all inherit him? The culture Philbin is trying to implement, are there many on the roster that he wouldn't be a big fan of? IMO types like Incognito aren't what Philbin wants, even people like Jerry who struggle with weight aren't what he wants. He wants hard working, team first, respect yourself and your team mates types and the only one I can think of off the top of my head that mightn't tick all those boxes would be Wallace (I guess Martin as well now, although maybe slightly different). Look at vocal people like Dansby, not here now.

This . . . would have thanked but couldn't at the time.

Yep, a well oiled machine. Everything is great in Miami.

I think Hartline is more the "Philbin" type. Gibson as well. Pouncey, Wake, Misi, Ellerbe, Grimes, Patterson, Clemons, Tannehill. I think all those players fit, actually.

And I think you can add players who don't fit, but they need to be added after the culture is established and stable.

It was probably a mistake to leave Incognito on the team while the culture is still developing, in the absence of the balancing and stabilizing influence of Jake Long. If you're going to let Jake Long go, you almost then have to let Incognito go and pave the way for Pouncey to become the offensive line's leader, with his fitting much better with Philbin's approach.
