Prospect Profiles
Matt Ware
Position: Cornerback/Free Safety
College: UCLA
Height: 6-2
Weight: 209
Hometown: Malibu, Calif.
OVERVIEW
Excellent athlete who saw action on both sides of the ball his first two years with the Bruins … In addition, he started at both cornerback and free safety during his time with the defensive unit … Matt possesses all of the tools to become a great player — great size, speed, strength, athleticism, toughness and intelligence … Started all 11 games at cornerback in 2001, becoming the Bruins' first true freshman to start every game of a season … He then made a switch to free safety in 2002, starting the first three contests there before moving back to right cornerback … Proving his versatility is not limited to only football, he plays pro baseball in the Seattle Mariners organization during the summers as an outfielder (2002-03) … Started 34 of 35 games for the Bruins, recording 117 tackles (74 solos) with an 11-yard sack, five stops for losses of 22 yards, two fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, 13 pass deflections, eight interceptions for 68 yards in returns and a pair of blocked kicks … Added 22 yards on four carries (5.5 avg), 49 yards on a reception and 23 yards on a punt return.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Tall, well-built with long, muscular arms, a tight waist, thick thighs and calves and a good bubble … Very smart player who quickly reads and reacts to the play … Stays tight with the receiver in deep routes and does a nice job of using his strength and hands to knock his opponent off the route in press coverage … Can shadow the speedy pass catchers on deep patterns and does an excellent job of timing his leaps to get to the ball at its high point … Has natural hands for the interception … Shows the ability to settle and play in the zone, executing the switch-off flawlessly … Makes sharp breaks on the ball in run force and has the ability to cover ground fast … Stays low in his pads and will face up to the bigger blockers with no hesitation to get to the ball carrier in the short area … Rarely challenged by opposing quarterbacks (statistics will not tell the true story on this player, as teams geared away from his territory) … Shows a sudden burst out of his backpedal and above average plant-and-drive agility in transition.
Negatives: Excellent shutdown cornerback, but needs to refine his tackling technique (more of a grab tackler than a wrap-up defender) … Quick-twitch type with explosive acceleration out of his breaks, but will overrun plays at times in the open field (only when he tries to go for the ball rather than neutralize the receiver) … Active run supporter, but gets tied up at times vs. the larger blockers (needs to extend his hands to prevent blockers from getting into his chest) … Did not fare well in games vs. top-rated receivers (Washington's Reggie Williams had 10 catches and USC's Mike Williams gained 181 yards in 2003 and Oklahoma State's Rashaun Woods totaled 143 yards in 2002).
AGILITY TESTS
4.49 in the 40-yard dash … Bench-pressed 225 pounds 15 times … 31 7/8-inch arm length … 10-inch hands.
