Off season cut / let go of note :
Mike Wallace
Brian Hartline
Brandon Gibson
Finnegan
Odrick
Delmas

Sign / re-sign :
Torrey Smith
Michael Crabtree
Franklin or Iupati
Charles Clay
Michael Thomas

If we were able to pull this off I would then go and spend my top 3 draft picks on the best available defensive players, hopefully a corner, a middle linebacker, and a defensive tackle in no particular order.
I know this would be an extremely active FA period for us, but realistically I think that Smith would be cheaper than Wallace and be a lateral move as far as talent is concerned (he may even fit better with Tannehill), Crabtree would cost us no more than Hartline does now and IMO he'd be a big upgrade (I personally feel that he had a down year because of Kaepernick's struggles), and a starting caliber guard would theoretically set us up with a nice starting 5 in September assuming Billy Turner can take over one spot.

Anyway, this would give us much needed help on the outside, bolster our interior line, and give us a lot of flexibility in the draft. Is it realistic?

No, I doubt any team could hit on that many free agents in a single season.

I guess?

Not sure why you would go after Crabtree?

Also why not cut Starks and use his $5 to bring back Odrick?

Torrey Smith = Wallace for lack of better words minus the $. Single route runner that is purely a vertical threat. You enter the season with Smith, Crabtree, Landry. No clear cut #1, no Alpha Dog WR. Same situation we are in now.

Toss in Crabtree is more drama than Wallace plus a torn achilles heel, lost about 3 steps.

Who is playing FS? Hope not Thomas.

I don't know if it's doable, but I do agree Hickey & co., need to be BOLD this off season - including in the draft.

Here is something to ponder; Neither Seattle, the pats, or even Green have a Diva (I mean alpha dog) WR

You make a good point with the Starks for Odrick move, I agree there.
I just think that my plan makes us a better offensive team and it may actually save us some $$ over the next couple of years.
Smith and Wallace are similar but I do feel that Smith is a little more well rounded, and Crabtree is much better than Hartline. He gets much more seperation, has better hands, and he's a true red zone threat. Like I said, I think Crabtree's #'s slid because Kaepernick had a terrible year.
We would definitely have some work to do defensively under my plan, but that'd be the case anyway, and I'd go defense heavy in the early rounds of the draft while picking offensive depth later.

Here is something to ponder.

Seattle has the best D in the league and the best run game in the league. Ranked 29th in passing this season. They don't need to pass to win....(should of stuck to that during the Super Bowl)

Pats have the best QB/HC combo in the league (apart from the cheating) and are master minds of scheme. They take Wal-Mart bag boys and turn them into super stars through scheme. I don't see Philbin/Lazor coming out with some insane scheme, nor Tannehill being $ on every pass.

GB, Nelson is no Alpha dog? Toss in you have a QB that could hit a WR in triple coverage with no problem.

We don't have Brady/Rodgers under center. We don't have Beast Mode running the rock, and we sure as hell don't have the Legion of Boom holding teams to under 10 points a game.

:idk:

I would sign Smith then get a CB like Flowers instead of Crabtree and draft White to replace Hartline.

Definitely dont want Crabtree... expensive, and I dont think he had a down year... more of a down career. He is oft in jured and with the talent and ability coming out of college, he has accomplished and thrived to nothing great at all.

All of those FA are quite expensive as well... I doubt we would spend so much.

Orlando Franklin I DEFINITELY want to land... I like Iupati, but many on these forums arent big on him due to his sub par pass blocking... so thats iffy there. clint Boling is a guy to keep an eye on as well at the guard position.

Torrey Smith is another expensive WR that is just speed... hit or miss all season he will be. Not worth it really in my mind.

sign clay back YES!!! I actually wouldnt mind signing Delmas back as well. When he is on the field, he can be great for us!!! Would like to sign him cheap!!!

I know cap space is an issue. Not sure what kind of money he would get, but I would love to pick up TE Jordan Cameron. Red zone threat who can catch the ball. I know he has had some injury concerns, but he is young and reminds me a little of Gronk.

Neither of the two Super Bowl teams had a clear-cut #1 receiver. The other 10 playoff teams may/may not have had a clear-cut #1 receiver, but they never reached the Super Bowl. I think all this talk throughout the forums about obtaining a #1 receiver, although well-intended, doesn't really hold water. Is there REALLY a need for signing the almighty #1??

Not that I wouldn't want to "upgrade" our receiving corps, but I think in the second year of the Lazor offensive system, he will utilize the personnel we have/end up with and build on their strengths. It's not like...if we get a true #1, that guy will be targeted 20+ times a game...

I, for one, am excited to see how Lazor improves on his first season, with a renewed running game (Miller) and an up-and-coming QB who threw for more than 4,000 yds and 27 touchdowns...

Have a little faith...

What's missing from the receiving corps (both WRs/TEs) is a versatile seam threat and YAC possession guy. The top teams don't necessarily have #1 receivers but have versatile "go-to guys" who are consistent on a weekly basis. Gronk, Jordy, Dez/DeMarco, Thomas/Thomas, Marshawn (huge in clutch moments as a RB). We lack that one explosive/physical player who always finds the sticks and always finds a way to make a play in traffic and picks up YAC.

We don't necessarily need a #1 WR, but we need a guy who Tannehill can rely on in most moments to make a play. There can definitely be marginal playoff success with a team that lacks a lot of talent, but a go-to guy is huge for teams that are on that elite level. We need more than just a go-to guy to get over the hump, but it would be really nice to have a consistent threat on offense.

as in the jordan Cameron thread I feel bad for this kid... talent and potential all going to most likely go to waste in a short career in the NFL. Concussions are awful ,and he is going to get another one down the road. Not worth the money to invest... bad luck and I feel bad for him.

It is definitely needed to upgrade our WR crew, especially with the players we are most likely or going to lose.

I totally agree with hoos here that we dont have a YAC guy, and really dont have a great down the field attack yet either (though it could start developing more).

Now I dont think WR is one of our main needs and targets on this team at all... but definitely need to strengthen it somewhere most likely in the draft. I dont think we should ignore WR at all, due to the Patriots and Seahawks have no #1 WR on their rosters... that would be insane to think, well since they dont have a top guy we shouldnt bring one in. Patriots have great players that fit their system well... but they also have Gronk which creates miss matches and he is a freak our there... thats a top guy. and would the Patriots want a #1 WR... YES... I'm pretty sure they are looking into things to figure that out, cause they have been trying to do so for a bit now.
