Since training camp has started, one of the biggest weaknesses of this team if not the biggest has been our secondary. I know it's definitely way early, but replacing Pat and Sammy isn't going to be that easy especially after Poole went down. Now I believe that if we need help at S, it's not going to be too hard to find.
Why do I sound so optimistic? Because the S position is not such an impact position in the NFL in comparision to other positions. As far as trading is concerned, it doesn't take much to land a solid player. Case in point is how the Jets pretty much gave away their starting S from last year John McGraw for nothing pretty much. Now is McGraw a difference maker? Hardly but there aren't many difference makers at S out there anyway (I love Ed Reed but most safeties don't fall into that category). If we can get a guy who is smart, can play his position relatively error free and make plays when given the opportunity that would be perfect.
So here's what I'm thinking. We have a glut of running backs on our team. Suppose guys like Gordon, Minor, and Harris play well in the next up coming games, there are teams out there that still need RB's. Not necessarily to start but to provide depth. Suppose these same teams just so happen to be deep at the safety position and will have to make some difficult decisions during final cuts. More than likely, they will not get a high draft pick by trading away one of their safeties (see John McGraw) and we wouldn't get much for trading a Gordon, Minor, and less for a Harris. So we swap our RB for their safety and we both improve. Is this realistic or am I looking at the NFL through Aqua colored sunglasses?
