So as we all know now Marshall has been the starting CB for the past 2 days, and Vonate has been the 1st team nickel CB. While Sean Smith hasn't been moved. Not that big of a deal people.

Smith CAN"T play the nickel if his life depended on it, just not as quick, Welker would go for 250 on Smith. Davis and Marshall are the only 2 guys that ATM can cover in the slot / nickel package, so there getting most of the runs with that. Davis was the starting CB for the first 5? days, and now Marshall is the starting CB, while Davis is getting reps at the nickel, which is what Marshall was doing the first 5 days as well. Davis hasn't been demoted. He's not running with the 2nd string D, he's learning a newer position to be versatile. He's not losing his spot IMO. He's learning a new spot, getting reps in that spot. So don't get freaked out when you see "Marshall the NEW starting CB" It's not true frankly because we have no clue what there thinking down there. Coyle screams versatility, which is why the S or interchangeable, and now he's teaching primarily boundary CBs how to play the slot.

Just don't believe the alarming blogs by these horrid beat writers unless its Barry Jackson..

But Phin the reports have been that Davis plays the outside in nickel and marshall slides inside. Doesn't that mean vontea is playing his normal position but only when 5 defensive backs are on the field? Your theory would be very believable if we were reading reports about Bess vs Davis matchups.
 
I likely see this as motivation. Joe Philbin knows which buttons to push. Kevin Coyle is finding better ways to utilize Vontae's talents as well. It's refreshing to know our coaching staff is flexible. Sparano tried to be flexible but he micro-mismanaged, and was limited by his lack of game planning skills. I remember last preseason (might have been the 1st game), we came out looking lethal, Reggie tore it up in the first quarter, especially on that first drive. We looked like a perennial team! Then comes the next drive, and we of course stall! And then we pretty much ah, suck the rest of the game. Now granted, it was preseason, but never forget that preseason games are not only used to evaluate players, it's also a used to evaluate coaches, and we saw as clear as day, no adjustments...no first downs...no mixing it up...no nothing!

Coach Philbin and staff will strategically have each play and series maped out, and likely in multiple revisions with many specific player modifications.
 
I think vontae is just adjusting to concepts in new system. Vontae is at home playing press man in a wr face...smith and marshall are better playing zone and off coverages. In this day and age you need three good corners anyway but vontae is the best fit covering the nickel spot. But i am sure he will earn his starting spot back.
 
I really don't care as long as we are lining up the best players on the field to improve our chances to win.
 
Does anybody remember the first half of last season? Vonate was burned repeatedly, and had to take himself out of games. This kid could be Revis like, but he needs to seriously apply himself. If the coaching staff was happy with him, he would be first team.
 
The camp and preseason is the time to experiment. Vontae may be playing inside due to necessity. I have a feeling that all three of those guys will be changing up depending on who the opponent is. Vontae also needs to know that this staff is calling the shots.

Interesting notion but I think there might be a little more to it... I think when you make a switch for a few DAYS you are doing more than just teaching... I don't think you sacrifice valuable reps just to coach somebody to be a backup or add versatility... It's kind of like taking Incognito out of the lineup to learn to be a long snapper...

Chemistry is CRUCIAL.. Coaches know it... They need to play together... Learn each other's nuances and tendencies... Truthfully I think Coyle is the new guy and he comes in here without any preconceived notions of what a player is or isn't... I think he wants to see for himself who fits where... So I think it really is more of an audition than your post suggests... With the added side benefit of motivating Davis...

I have no doubt Davis will be back in that spot but that is because he is better than Marshall... Not because he played there before... Sparano was afraid of his players, and coddled the vets... I hope this is a sign of a coaching staff that will play the best guy on Sunday. PERIOD.
 
Its looks to me as a versitility tactic. Gotta see what your players can do in every position and how they can read the field from every aspect. shoot, put him at safety too, so he can see it from that aspect of the field...the best way to learn is to see things from diffrent aspects...not saying thats what is going on...but its a possibility.
