Read this: From Ben Volin's twitter.

I asked Philbin about Vontae today, and he offered few clues.
On one hand, Philbin said, "It’s not a reflection that he hasn’t done well." But he also said, "There’s nothing locked in stone here. ... We’re looking at guys who can execute what the coaches want done best. ... Certainly we want to look at other guys and create competition."

Also this:

There are 2 ways to look at Vontae Davis' situation:
Either he's clearly the No. 1 cornerback, and the Dolphins simply want to take a look at other guys playing with the starting defense; or Davis isn't playing well in camp, and the coaching staff is putting him on notice. My hunch is it's closer to the latter.

And this:

The most interesting development since #Dolphins camp started: The revolving door at cornerback opposite Sean Smith.
Smith has rarely, if ever, left the field when the starting defense is playing. But Vontae Davis has spent considerable time on the sidelines when the 1's are on the field, replaced mostly by Richard Marshall, who is presumed to be the Nickel/slot cornerback. Nolan Carroll and Jonathan Wade have also taken some reps with the 1's in Davis' place.

What's you guy's take? I think he just isn't showing up, but then again I always read from Omar that Vontae is deflecting passes and the whole 9 yards. I'm kind of confused about this

No doubt something is up w him. Secondary starting to worry me a bit.

I haven't heard much about Vontae in the training camp tweets, yet for a cornerback, that is usually a good sign. Vontae is making this team, no doubt about it.

Im with VA_Finfan, The less you hear about a corner the better it is. You usually only hear about corners when they are doing bad. I think its a lock that he is our #1 DB.

Smith seems to be impressing. That's the best news I've heard in a while. I forget, but didn't Dansby or someone else on defense say he was the most improved a while back?

Well, duh! I think the question is more around whether he's losing his grip on a starter position. My guess is they want R Marhsall getting some 1st team reps. I think Vontae is probably doing just fine.

While Chad Johnson got the headlines, but Richard Marshall was the big free agent Dolphin recruit this year ($16M for 3 years). I think many would be surprised by his experience and accomplishments. Vontae is talented but maybe they are just trying to increase Marshall's reps.

Can't really get worried because were hearing nothing from a cornerback in practice. As people have said, usually a good thing. The fact he is taking large amounts of time out of the game is worrying tho. Don't buy the idea that he's a lock to be the number 1 so he can just sit out.. Even if he is a lock there is an important wr battle going on and they need to prove it against the best (if vontae is what you would consider the best).

The biggest knock on Davis coming out of college was that he had elite talent but sometimes does not have his head in the game and does not stay focused. I remember reading a scouting report that said his coaches at Illinois had to constantly motivate him to keep him focused. I think VD has the skill-set to be a top 3-5 CB in this league, he can tackle and when he is focused his coverage skills are elite. It wouldn't surprise me if he is having his moments of being lackadaisical or not focused in camp and the coaches are noticing it and putting Marshall in to see what he has and make VD wake up. The thing that worries me about VD is the fact that if this is still a problem with him 4 years in the league will it ever truly change? Lets hope I'm wrong but from these reports it sounds like something is going on.

Wow, you really went out on a limb with that prediction.

I sure hope the change of system isn't effecting him....he may have simply been more comfortable in the previous system.

Probably a non-issue. Camp has not been going on long enough for his role to be usurped. I am sure it has more to do with SS needs reps and the other secondary players do too. VD is the top dog and less concern is over him so lets get reps here type of thinking. Also I think some players are being tried in that spot if VD is schemed over Welker against the PAts. I think there it is more of a team development move than any concern about VD's play.

May be wrong... but I would bet that a boundry CBs role changes the least in any defensive scheme change. Man, Man under, cov 2, cov3, sink zones, quarters, 2 press or not to press.
