The fact that we only use one formation 97% of the time. If fact, I've been amazed that almost no one is talking about it. We run the spread option almost all the time. Which is basically a college formation for teams that have a running QB or a QB that can run. For me, it will always be the Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow formation because they started it. Urban came up with it at Utah and brought it to the U of Fla. And now a lot of NFL teams use it. But it is not a running formation and it limits the pass routes a QB can throw. We are a very easy offense for other teams to game plan for right now. The problem with the defense.....not so clear for me....

I'm beginning to wonder if we even know how to run the ball out of the i-formation at all.

Adrian Peterson's 30-yard dud in the season opener engendered debate about his fit in a shotgun formation. It's perhaps no surprise that Peterson's sterling Week 3 performance didn't include a single carry out of the shotgun -- versus 15 in the first two weeks. Only three of Peterson's 20 carries versus the Chargers came in three-wide sets. The other 17 featured extra blockers on the field. It appears the Vikings have found their formula for maximizing Peterson's effectiveness. Peterson had 20 carries for 126 yards for a 6.3 ave and 2 TDs. And they stopped running him out of the shotgun... DUH, running backs run better out of running formations. Much like the ones used on us in the last 3 weeks.

I remember Marino's best teams, when he would play shotgun a ton, often ran out of shotgun. Those running stats never did well then. I can't see the running stats improving now either.

I miss the good ol days when it was the simple "go" vs "go go" debate

Imagine that coupled with the offense now!!!

But I do agree. We need more under center formations, hell doesn't even need to be i form, just anything!

So, changing formations will cause the LG, RG, and backup LT to instantly pull their heads out of their asses?

Probably because it's not true. Nor is the notion that is was created by Urban Meyer or the assumption that there is a limitation of route concepts.

Have you watched the games? I saw us use the I formation one time with Earl Mitchell as the fullback. We do not even have a full back.

Crazy but true...it is easier to run and to block running out of a running formation. This is not Rocket Surgery.

On every down the defense knows how we are going to be lined up and where the QB is going to be.

I remember years ago when we were upset that Chris Chambers was lining up on the same side on every down and now we are lining up in the same formation 97% of the time.

Has anyone noticed that the 3 teams we played used fullbacks and running formations and they gashed with them?

Just wait and watch when we play the Jets.

Philbin doesn't want a running team. His personnel decisions show that he really doesn't even want a running game. He wants an offense based on short timing routes, which is how he described it when he was hired. Those short passes will basically take the place of the running game. He's an idiot. This team will never be relevant until another regime who knows the value of a running game comes in and builds a proper o-line.
