Bits and pieces.

The run vs the pass in a team's success.

• Arms vs. legs report: We track the effect of 300-yard passers and 100-yard rushers on teams' won-lost records. 300YP -- Last week, 2-2 (.500); Last season, 30-31 (.492). 100YR -- Last week, 9-3 (.750); Last season, 107-44 (.709).

It seems Wanny thoughts on running are proved correct over please pass the ball and get us a good passer. AJ is my guy too, so don't read into this as I want Jay back. When we do pass, I like my chances with AJ. :D

This is simple:

Teams run when they're ahead.

Teams pass when they're behind.

These stats are nothing new.

I'm not reading anything into those stats at all. Most of the huge passing games are teams coming back in the fourth quarter. I'd be interested to see how many of the 100 yard rushing games had 200+ yards passing to go with it.

Uh tell that to the Rams, or Indy, or Minn...

Did you see the GB game the other night...that's classic football, and we're talking B. Farve

So you agree with Wanny's philosophy as this is where I think he'd like to be.

You mean balance? Then yes, I agree. If I remember corectly, they played a balanced offense for 3 quarters, then they pounded the rock in the 4th after they built their lead.

We'll you could see alot of "EFFECTIVE" passing from AJ this year....(as opposed to Jay's "INEFFECTIVE" passing) look at the nubers he puyt in the air against Tenn. what was it 167 yds. passing... in one half...that could open the run if he's that effective...then the fans would be happy and Whinestadt would be happy getting his running yards.. This year we may be that BALANCED O that dave so much wants

Before reading too much into those stats. Here are a few others.

2003 Superbowl Champs - New England
2002 Superbowl Champs - Tampa Bay

2003 New England - Ranked 27th in Rushing, Ranked 9th in Passing
2002 Tampa Bay - Ranked 27th in Rushing, Ranked 15th in Passing

2002 Miami - Ricky Williams led the league in rushing. Miami missed the playoffs

If you're going to justify wins/losses with rush/pass, then justify the ultimate winners.

You need to be able to have a running game.... If you have a good runner that defenses are scared of then you open up the passing game to score big points....proof in Pats, Indy, Minn, & Phillys attacks....

1972 undefeated team, run team, sb winners..your avatar.

2001 Ravens run team..SB champs, Dallas and others, most of our champs to include Denver when Elway was there. Passing only get you so far..mostly keeps the chains moving, but running keeps the clock moving.

So, sometimes you can run the ball and win (ala 72 phins/01 Ravens). Othertimes you can pass the ball to win (ala 02 Bucs/03 Pats). Saying that you HAVE to run the ball to win the superbowl, just isn't true. It is how well you execute your offense. 3int's kills a passing game. 3 fumbles would equally kill a running game.

Excellence of execution wins superbowls. Not whether you pass or run.

That's the key.

Too many people think that to run the football, you neglect passing the football and vice versa. That isn't the case at all.

Miami would be much more productive in the passing game if they would connect when they throw over the top off the play action.

Instead of throwing so many 2-3 yard routes that don't do a damn thing for your offense, you start throwing the 20 yard plus routes.

Miami doesn't have to pass the football 35-40 times a game to be effective, completely neglecting the running game in the process.

25 passes where 6-8 of them are shots down the field will make a world of difference in the passing game.
