i just got to thinking and I can hardly believe it when I went back and checked... since Nick Saban, every HC hired by the Dolphins has been an offensive minded coach. That’s 15 years of offensive minded coaches. Is it any wonder that the Dolphins have been mired as a weak finesse team for so long, routinely getting smashed by physical teams like the Ravens?

It’s time to change that... the offensive wizard route has failed miserably every time it’s been tried here and left the team weaker than when they got here.

Looking around the league, most of the perrenially dominant teams are led by HC’s with a defensive background, except for the rare exception like Andy Reid’s teams and his protégés... but even Reid’s teams tend to falter in the playoffs consistently.

Patriots, Steelers, Ravens (even though Harbaugh was ST coach, I’d argue that’s closer to D than O in terms of mindset.)

This franchise needs to reboot with a more aggressive, smash mouth mentality and purge itself of its decade plus of finesse players.

We keep wanting to relive the Marino years and since we can never hit on a QB we keep fantasizing that the offensive guru will fix all our offensive woes, but they always get here and end up with a substantially worse offense than what they did with their previous teams when they had genuine franchise QBs.

No more being hoodwinked by the QB whisperers. It’s time to create a new Miami Dolphins identity.

Hopefully Grier recognizes this as well.

I’d only consider coaches with defensive backgrounds at this point, John Harbaugh being the exception.

From what I’ve seen, the Legion or Boom mastermind Kris Richard would be at the top of my list, Vic Fangio second and any vet coaches out there with defensive backgrounds... Jim Schwartz comes to mind.

This year's playoffs, only 2 headcoaches who were previously defensive coaches:

KC, Reid - Offense
NE, Belichick - Defense
HOU, O'Brien - Offense
BALT, Harbough, Spec teams
LAC, Lynn, Offense
IND, Reich, Offense

LAR, McVay, Offense
NO, Payton, Offense
CHI, Naggy, Offense
DAL, Garrett, Offense
SEA, Carroll, Defense
PHI, Pedersen, Offense

Interesting. I wonder what the ratio of O to D coaches is for the non playoff teams as well. Meaning, does the above simply reflect the distribution of all HCs now in the NFL?

Kris Richard and Grier will hit it off like gangbusters. They share very similar philosophies and are both influenced from a defensive point of view. I expect Richard to be named the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins within a few weeks. Complete guess, but I’m basing it off what Grier said in his PC and what Richard has said over multiple interviews of his approach.

And how many of those have CONSISTENTLY been in the playoffs? I only see 2: KC and NO. NE and SEA are always contenders.

Sure, more than anything it’s the QB that matters in terms of consistent dominance, but there is something about Defensive minded coaches that perform better even when their QBs are struggling and they have a habit of attacking opposing teams strengths and neutralizing them which is critical in the playoffs.

Bottom line, offensive minded HCs have flamed our here for nearly 2 decades... its time for a new approach.

Richard was signed in Miami in 2005. Was Grier here back then? If so, they might already even have some sort of relationship.

I would be pumped with a RICHARD hire. I'd be content with the D, knowing RICHARDS back ground there, especially the secondary. Keep RIZZI, IMO & who might that OC be? That would be the $64,000 question. But, I'm very intrigued at the possibilities with RICHARD.

Let's look at it: AFC, non playoff teams are slanted to defense.

NYJ, Bowles, defense
BUFF, McDermott, defense

MIA, Gase, offense

PIT, Tomlin, defense
CLE, Williams, defense,
Hue offense (50/50)
CIN, Lewis, defense

DEN, Joseph, defense
OAK, Chucky, offense

JAX, Marrone, offense
TEN, Vrabel, offense (defensive minded per request)

I agree with your sentiment that the team needs to be more physical.

I also understand why Miami has tried to find an offensive coach. The team has been looking for someone who could match up with Bill Bellichick and his defensive schemes.

The game continues to tilt toward offense, but of be okay with a great defensive guy.

I’ll be damned. It’s an offensive league now.
