The Miami Dolphins have lacked depth at cornerback for quite a while. But when listing Miami’s primary needs on their roster — several other pressing issues lie on the roster. Miami has a need at quarterback, offensive tackle, pass rushers — all of which could be argued as more important as the corner position. After all, a good pass rush can help mask defensive back play!

But, in case you’ve missed it, the Dolphins don’t have a good pass rush this year. And they’re significantly far off from having one. And so the cornerback position is quickly becoming one of the biggest needs on the Dolphins’ roster this offseason.

Miami needs at least 2 CB's. One to start opposite Xavien Howard and another to help solidify depth. And possibly a third CB if Miami isn't able to settle on its, slot CB?

I guess Jalen Davis didn't make it. I stopped following camp when Ross made the fundraiser announcement, and consequently I didn't watch one snap until Rosen was announced as starter for Dallas. When I didn't see Jalen Davis out there I looked him up and now he's with Arizona.

Frankly I think it was a mistake. Davis is a scrappy player and wouldn't have emotional ups and downs during a lousy season. Contrast to so many members of this secondary who don't seem to care at all. Jones and Howard basically got out of the way during the sideline touchdown catch and run yesterday.

Marshon Lattimore versus Xavien Howard is no comparison. That was glaring last night during the Saints game and how Lattimore faired against Amari Cooper in contrast to Howard a week earlier. If the Dolphins are going to pick spots to invest money I'd like them to make sharper decisions than Jakeem Grant, Jesse Davis and Xavien Howard.

Have no fear Pat Surtain II comes out in 2021.

It shouldn't be too high. First round cornerbacks have a miserable record recently. A poster in the draft forum at FootballsFuture.com has done an analytics study of every position, designed to identify ideal traits and likelihood of success. It was aimed at projecting individuals but the shocking finding was that the position as a whole has been horribly evaluated and inflated over the past decade or so. The return on investment among first round cornerbacks was as bad as any position.

It left me thinking that if Mel Kiper had been sharp and ahead of the curve he would have been ranting that he would never draft a cornerback in the first round, instead of loud conventional wisdom regarding running backs.

Granted, this does not align historically. I remember early first round gems like Mike Haynes and obviously Deion Sanders. But given the new abuse of the passing game and rules application since 2004 it is more difficult to stop these elite quarterbacks no matter who you send out there, so I'm not sure it hasn't been flawed thinking to prioritize cover guys as opposed to sack guys and disruptive guys. The last line of defense is often no defense at all.

Besides, that stat regarding 32+ inch arms and multiple Pro Bowl appearances is quite startling. Most likely that type of thing has been devalued and apparent cover ability at a young age has been overvalued.

Playing defensive back in the NFL might be the most difficult thing to do in sports now. Your rushers can't hit the QB's anymore and all DB's can really do is just allow catches and tackle. They've taken away your ability to get your hands on a receiver.

Speaking of THAT, I know you no watch PRO ball  but
the call last night against Clay Matthews (Rams leading
29-24 with less than six minutes left) was beyond farcical!

Personally I'm sick of the "flag football" rules for QBs
coupled with the blatantly obvious inconsistent application
of the same supposed "rules."

The N F L is teetering on a WWF type "product" where
the fans know it's FAKE but they watch anyway for the
absurd spectacle of it all!

Speaking of "that," the glaringly girly arms of your boy
should fit right in!

Some excellent points here. I'd guess that length and athletic thresholds would significantly increase the hit rates on 1st RD CB's. Off the top of my head, the best 1st RD CB's of the last few years are B. Jones, J. Ramsey, M. Lattimore, M. Humphrey, and T. White. J. Alexander will probably be in that group, and D. Ward could be, as well. Of those players, T. White is the only one who isn't an elite athlete, and he still ran a respectable 4.47. Lattimore, Alexander, and Ward are the only ones with <32" arms.

A lot like his dad imo. More smooth than physically gifted. He seems more smooth a player than top shelf tools.

Me I’m taking the penn state tight end next year with miamis top pick.

The gesicki thing will be over next year

Really? He’s bigger, stronger, faster, taller than his dad. Think he’s more physically gifted than his dad. I can’t justify a TE in the first, praying gesicki pans out but I think your right most likely won’t.
