remember ur 1st chance may be ur last
I've spent some time trying to figure out just what may have went down here. Ive come to the following conclusion, and i think it works pretty well.
The dolphins as we all know have been wanting manning as a fin since it became a realistic possibility a few months ago. They have been planning and plotting a few different plans. One WITH and one WITHOUT manning.
I believe that they started having trade talks with the bears about Marshall a few weeks back during the combine after Marshall had starting making it public he wanted to reunite with Cutler. They seen the writing on the wall and didnt want to make it any harder on a first year head coach. So they had a deal in place that would remove the diva and distraction that marshall is.(must be more of a locker room negative than we are aware of) This would fit in well with what Marcellus Wiley tweeted saying something about how he was told by marshall something huge but couldnt tell us what. Take al this and think about how Phibin has said he prefers to build Via the draft and you could see how additional draft picks could help(however 2 3rds is not enough for a WR the caliber as MArshall imo) Also note the WRs in green bay. While all talented Id say that none of Jennings, Nelson, Driver, etc are near as talented and gifted as BM. I think that they may want heady/intelligent guys in this offense that are not Divas. Perhaps they had seen enough of marshall to know he doesnt fit the system well(or at least well enough to validate the highest contract in WR history)
On the other hand they believed having Marshall as a piece to help try to lure MAnning in could be paramount. So they wouldn't and couldnt pull the trigger until they finally met with and spoke to manning about his ideas of what he'd like. Once they had this discussion one of two things happened.
Either A Peyton decided he didnt want to play with marshall and would rather not deal with his antics. Maybe he didn't view him as capable or a hard enough of a worker to learn the new system? This would give miami the cap space needed to make some of the moves that would compliement an addition such as manning as well.
Or B: Peyton informed miami or gave them the impression that they are most likely not gonna be the landing spots for his services. In which case for whatever reason ranging from Philbin not believing in him being a good fit in the system, locker room clashes, or Cap space for other FA's miami deciding to cut ties now and get what they could so they could rid them selves of the contract and be able to be more active in FA.
In summary: I believe Miami had the deal in place before they met with manning to trade marshall but wanted to discuss it with manning to see if having MArshall was a big reason why he was interested in playing for Miami. Then Manning either said No hed rather Marshall not be here OR he gave the impression to our FO that he wont be a fin and we moved on and pulled the trigger on the marshall deal to give philbin a clean slate and more cap space to mold his team.
I guess this isn't too different from all the pieces kinda being reported seperately or w.e. But Ijust have been like everyone else with this driving me crazy and had to post my thoughts.
Either way I dont think losing Marshall is as bad as a lot of us think. I do however think that the compensation we received was a little short. I'd have like to seen us open up talks with a few teams and create a bidding war. The only reason i could see why we wouldnt is because they needed to do it in a hurry. Why such a hurry?? well thats the question I have a hunch we will learn the answer too in the near future.
ANYWAYS 2012 could and should still be a beginning of something new and hopefully we will finally get some good coaching and stability with Philbin and Company!!! Go PHINS!!!
EDIT:
P.S.
Also i think our biggest problem may be that we all assume that guys like Mr. Ross and Ireland fit into the mold we have made out for them. I for one am Excited to see that Ireland is flexible to bending and molding a roster to fit the new system. Remember you guys wanted to remove ourselves from the Sparano and Parcells way of football. . . well that will take some neccessary sacrifices. Unfortunately as good as Marshall is he may just be a round peg tring to fit into a square hole in Philbins offense. He may be worth a lot more as a traded piece that provides long term cap space then being misused and kept just because Ireland made the trade for him and doesnt want negative publicity for traded him 2 seasons later for substantially less compensation than we gave up.
Finding out about the Marshall incident that violated league rules that may lead to suspension also sheds some light on the still unfilled in blanks to this story. If he is indeed suspended this may have been a decent deal for miami.
I think some of us just cant see the football side of decisions and forget that this isnt Madden football. This is real life where the fitting together of a team is so delicate that its actually a lot harder than Us sit at home COUCH GMS think it is.
