I've never seen so many batted down balls!

i think a few factors are at play here..

Watts excels at batting down balls he had a couple
Offensive line collapsing the pocket
Henne staying in the pocket
Hennes trajectory on his throws
Henne telegraphing his throws..

I think henne needs to feel the pressure better and escape from the pocket
then he wont have to throw over big d lineman and gain extra time or take off running..

In high school we use to have a call called, "Check Them Balls" and we would call it on dump passes. When the ball snapped we engage the d-lineman and we would nut check them...it was really funny as we had a good time doing this hahaha

I was told it happens when the Oline protection is not getting their hands down. Im not a coach, but didnt quite understand what the person meant by saying this...

Some one gave you the wrong info. An offensive lineman cannot grab the arm of the defender to keep their hands down, that will automatically draw a holding flag. Columbo not being able to hold the right side down is a problem but we also got to lay some of this on Henne. On one battered ball our Oline did stop the D lineman at the LOS and Henne just threw a flat pass right into his raised arms. Maybe it wasn't Hennes fault but just the same, an Olineman is not permitted to grab a Dlinemans arm and push it down, automatic holding.

Now, you talk about holding. We must have really pissed someone off in the NFL officiating community because for the second week in a row, our defense has been held like I have never seen. Not making excuses for the loss but man, its as plain as day and its happening right in front of the refs and no flags are being called. Watched the DVR of the NE game vs San Diego, same thing as when we played NE. SD Oline was called for many holding penalties, some, like ours, were really ticky tac. On the other hand, NE RT, the rookie, held onto their DEs like a tired fighter holds on to his opponent in a fight.

It is happening on a regular basis...low passes? How tall is Henne? Maybe he is 6' trying to throw over 6'-8"
linemen and the ball is on the way up when it gets to th line of scrimmage.

Its happening on a regular basis because Ds are game planning for it. Love the posters here that want our Olineman now to grab the Ds arms and pull them down LMAO. More holding calls and more times the Oline would be called out. If you have a DVR of the game or if you can watch a replay. Watch when there is 4:16 seconds to go in the first quarter. We are near out Goal line and Henne drops back and completes a short pass to Marshal.

They preplayed the down and showed it from where essentially the Ds linebackers would be standing. There was great blocking and from the snap, Henne stared Marshal down as soon as he received the shotgun snap. When he pulled his arm back the entire Left side of the D line, our right side ( yeah columbos side but this time he was doing his job along with the all hallowed Garner) all were blocked and when he pulled his arm back, no less then 5 Houston guys on D immediately went straight up in the air. At that point and please, do not let anyone even attempt to tell you differently, an Olineman can do nothing but block straight ahead, he cannot jump up and pull arms down, he cannot reach up and pull arms down, he can only stand their and push out forward.

Like I said, if you or you know someone that has the game, watch right at that moment. I can right an essay on what is going on but there is truth a picture is worth a thousand words. On this play Henne was lucky enough to get it by their up raised arms but thats the chance the D takes. Most times the ball will go past but on other times it will hit an arm a hand or be deflected. If you watch close, the ball did tip the top of someones hand but the catch was still made.

On the same play they clearly show Fasano in the middle of the field, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall by himself. If Henne had seen him there were no Dline in the middle to jump up and raise their arms. Simply put, as a defensive player said last year when they played us, WE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO. Sure they do, all they have to do is watch Chad Henne, he will dictate where and who the ball is going to. Happens everytime. Watch it at 415 to go in the first quarter, clear as a bell what is going on.

I used to think it was just bad luck but there is definitely more to it than that. They brought it up during an Atlanta game that Matt Ryan only had 2 batted balls for the year or something.

On the other hand we are not batting any ourselves. It pisses me off too, because against guys like Brady. A guy that is getting the ball out quickly and reducing your chances of getting too him. You would think our defensive lineman would get there hands up. I guess it's too much to ask.

Of all QB's in the NFL last season, Henne led the league for most batted balls last year too.

He telegraphs his throws making it easy for D-linemen to judge the area to swat em, furthermore Henne has a very low release point for a guy his size making it even worse. What compounds the problem EVEN FURTHER is Henne has a slow release .. so the defense has all the time in the world to cover the area and they don't have to get so high to bat them down

remember that Henne cannot throw "arc" passes, in other words he has no ability whatsoever to "rainbow" his throws to drop them behind linebackers or in front of safeties ~ as he has no touch at all so they are all "laser" throws - meaning low throws with his low release point to boot

the batted balls yesterday didn't surprise me at all because it's what we've come to expect with Henne. And by the way, that's why Henne is so horrible with "fade" routes because he simply has zero touch and cannot "drop sink" a pass in there with a rainbow throw (something Pennington was extremely good at and it benefited the receivers and TE's greatly that year in 08)

you mean to tell everyone you've never seen 3 passes batted down before?

You guys really do find anything to complain about it.

no pocket awareness, try a pumpfake once in a while.

I'm sure the way he pats the ball before he throws doesn't help things

I did see more batted balls on Sunday than Henne

Luke McClown.

The one where Mario Williams was like 2 feet away from him with his hands up, and i guess Henne thought he could just throw it right through him....smh

Completel correct on all accounts. Thats why they look like basketball players. Hope you went back to the time I said and look at it. Its the most perfect example anyone can imagine.

Another thing about his release. Go back to where his arm was hit and they intercepted the ball. put it a frame at a time. His arm was hit because he friggin double pumped the dam football on a short out pass that everyone on the planet earth knew where he was throwing it. Pulls his arm back, it goes forward, he stops the ball and motion with his left hand then he pulls his arm back again and just as it moves forward the Dlineman touches his arm with his hand. Did not see that until I looked at it about 3 times. Stare down receiver, under pressure so you double pump ? Gotta love it man.
