So many greats in every sport don't win their championship. Ted Williams never won a World Series. Barry Sanders never won a Super Bowl. Why are these guys not as stigmatized as Marino? I thought football was a team sport, not an individual sport, regardless of how important a QB is. Does this mean Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino? :err:

I'm sure every single person on this site has had this argument more than a few times with fans of other teams/qbs. I know I have. I know Dan is the best/most talented QB ever, I no longer even try to justify it. I always argue that Elway never woulda seen a ring without T. Davis. Montana had Rice, taylor, Craig, Jones, and a good defense. Aikman... no need to explain what he had around him. Favre... had a stint of greatness, but how can the best qb ever have the record for most INTs?... All these arguments with deeper detail have been said to death by myself and i'm sure others.

The lack of a solid running game killed the Dolphins during Marino's tenure as QB. I guarantee if he had a set of running backs like we do now, he would've won multiple Superbowls. The fact that he never won a ring, though, won't diminish his greatness as a quarterback in the eyes of a "true" NFL fan. His first-ballot selection into the NFL hall of fame is a testament to that.

I think (comparing him with Barry Sanders) it's partly because of the position he played. There's so much importance put on the QB that sometimes people seem to think they can win Superbowls on their own.

I don't think you can compare Trent Dilfer's situation to Marino.

Trent was brought into a veteran team that had been built up already, Marino was in the same team his whole career. They built the team around him and they still couldn't get it done.

Great QB's are supposed to raise the level of the team around them, and they're supposed to beat better teams with their leadership skills.

Danny would audible out of running plays so he could throw more passes. I think Marino was much better than Elway & Kelley. Without TD Elway never won the big game & Jim Kelley never pulled it out and he had a very good team around him, but the fact that he never powered a team to win the Superbowl is something that can't be ignored.

poor D was why Dan didnt get multiple rings

Shula NEVER built a team around Marino.

for some reason QB's are labeled so hard core on that final game.... until a QB gets that ring they tend to be placed away from the group that has obtained the ring. QB's are the leaders, the ne with the ball to read and produce, the general of the TEAM (even though they only on offense too)... QB's are the main focus usually no matter what.

other sports like baseball, they only bat 3-4 times normally a game, and play in the field with 8 others in a certain area..... Barry Sanders, awesome career at RB, but people can see and say that he had a week offensive line, a not so powerful passing attack, and absent defense (who was Detroit's GENERAL or QB throughout... lol)......

Marino was a great great QB obviously and people can see that, but some stupids will disagree just for that fact. you cant limit greatness on a piece of jewlery, but man it would of been great for him to win one!!!

i read some where or someone told me that During Marinos career he and 1 running back hit a 1,000 yards. Dont know if its true though. Theres no doubt in my mind that if Marino had a RB like we had now, he would of won a SB.

i believe that Karim Abdul-Jabbar was the nly RB to go over 1,000 yard for Marino..... i might be incorrect, but i think it is correct

Yeah I think that's right, Berniee Parmalee might of come close.

Anyway, football is the ultimate team sport. Warner had hall of fame WR's to throw to when he won it all with the Rams, and he's got Pro Bowl wide out's now. Brady didn't have that record year until some guys name Moss and Welker came to that team. P. Manning has had a hall of fame career, won a super bowl, and had a pair of hall of famer's to throw to as well. I don't think any of those guys could of put up big numbers and won it all without that kind of supporting cast.

Simply put. Its a lazy argument. Everyone who says he isnt the best and bases that opinion on no Super Bowl rings hasnt taken the time to look at his entire career. Last time I checked football is a team sport. He took Miami to the playoffs with subpar talent on defense and 0 running game.
