Dolphins Rookie Jordan Phillips Grateful for Ndamukong Suh's tutelage

When defensive linemen come with the overall size and athleticism as 6-6, 335-pound Dolphins second-round pick Jordan Phillips, the usual questions concern work ethic and consistency.

When the Dolphins signed free agent supertackle Ndamukong Suh, nobody questioned performance, only his willingness to take on a more active team leadership role than he did in Detroit. What happened over the summer between Suh and Phillips won’t end those questions, but it gives a hint of how those players want said doubts answered.

“One thing he did is he encouraged Jordan Phillips to come out and train with him,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. “That’s an example of leadership — of taking a young player, showing him obviously from a physical standpoint and a professionalism standpoint, a preparation standpoint, some of the things that he’s done to get himself ready.”

So, after the NFL Rookie Symposium, Phillips headed for the land of Nike and the Portland born-and-raised Suh – Oregon. He spent 22 days doing daily two-hour workouts with Suh, then returning to the hotel and his fiancée at night.

“Just how hard he works,” Phillips replied when asked what he learned. “It’s incredible. I’ve never seen anybody work the way he does. That’s something I want to resemble.”

Many pre-draft scouting reports projected Phillips as a perfect nose guard with his massive upper body, large lower body and long arms. Also, Phillips played a 3-4 at Oklahoma. But the Dolphins run a 4-3 and have had Phillips backing up defensive tackles Suh and Earl Mitchell, requiring a little adjustment on Phillips’ part.

“I was in a 3-4 and just reading the guy,” he said. “Now, it’s attacking, attacking.”

We could have an amazing D-line with incredible depth if Phillips comes good. Kevin Coyle is salivating and Brady better bring lots of clean underpants.

Dion Jordan you disgust me....

suh is a giant jesus ( look at his upper body in the picture). Phillips if he's got his head on right is in good hands.

It's awesome to hear Phillips has embraced Suh as his mentor. It was actually a stroke of genius to give Suh someone to mentor. It's best for both players here. Not only is it obviously big for a player of enormous untapped potential like Phillips, but it's also good for a player of Suh's stature to take on a mentor role.

Who would have thought that by investing in Suh, we also improved the investment in Phillips? We just need to find out how to push Phillips' button to put his aggression level on 10 and the kid could be a beast.

what a breath of fresh air to bring a guy like Suh in, and have him teach pups. Wallace and the prior regime never did things like that. This organization is a much different one than it was from a culture position -

It sounds great in preseason. Let's see how much of the Suh work ethic rubbed off on Phillips. And fingers crossed his back remains healthy.

His physical ability was never in question. But, he left Oklahoma a huge mountain of untapped potential. Is he just a physical specimen like Nick Fairly? Or will he become the next great Marcel Dareus?

If he works hard and has that burning fire to be great like Suh, he will be great. But will he stay motivated and healthy? The sky is the limit.

Phillips embraces Suh helping him and goes out to Portland. DION jordan declines an offer from Jason Taylor to help him with technique...

With the talent we have on DL -- we can only imagine how dominate the unit would be IF Dion Jordan would have proven worthy of a top 3 pick!
