I saw that interview. CBS insists on touting its Thursday night NFL schedule during the golf telecasts every weekend. Nicklaus happened to be in the booth this time, as host of the tournament. Jim Nantz mentioned the O'Leary angle. Nicklaus said he has been a Dolphin season ticket holder since Day 1, but he agreed with Nantz that now his loyalties within the AFC East will take a shift, at least somewhat.
It's hardly confined to the Dolphins. The Nicklaus family has been huge supporters of the Miami Heat, and often shown on TV near courtside during the Lebron era. Barbara Nicklaus (Jack's wife) has probably talked about the devotion to the Heat more than anyone in the family, describing how nervous they get while watching the games. That family is huge, with so many kids and grandchildren, most of them remaining in the West Palm Beach area.
When I was a teenager I remember Jack's two eldest sons traipsing around Doral during the annual PGA tournament and occasionally causing trouble. One year they literally climbed the TV tower behind the 15th green and started shaking it. This was smack during the final groups on Sunday. The tournament officials went nuts and eventually got them down. I remember one of the officials saying in frustration that they deserved to be kicked off the premises but there was no way to do that, considering who they were related to.
