### Who’s at fault for the Dolphins ranking an astounding 31st against the run?

According to Pro Football Focus, the blame rests primarily with four players:

1) Earl Mitchell (rated 187th among 187 qualifying interior defenders against the run; incidentally, backups Jordan Phillips and CJ Mosley are 172nd and 173rd);

2) now injured Cam Wake (rated 128th against the run among edge defenders);

3) Olivier Vernon (107th); and

4) Kelvin Sheppard, rated 142nd of 162 linebackers against the run.

PFF doesn’t blame these four who all rank in the top 40 at their positions against the run: Suh (37), Derrick Shelby (40), Koa Misi and to a lesser extent, Jelani Jenkins (fifth and 40th).

### Wake smartly had surgery for a torn Achilles the day after the injury and he’s already ahead of schedule and expected back well before the start of next season, a close associate said. He hopes to begin running in four months and have some involvement in May/June practices.

According to a Dolphins source, the team hasn’t conveyed its intentions with Wake, including a possible restructuring of a contract that carries a $9.8 million cap hit, likely too high for Miami’s liking.

earl mitchell was a issue with stopping the run before he got here what were Mosely and Suh rankings last year in Detroit that will tell us how much our coaching is an issue.

Since signing Earl our run D has taken a serious hit. Our LBs are garbage and our DEs are not edge setters, but Earl has seemed a massive liability over these two years. It's not like he's a dominant rusher either. Or that he's doing much for the linemen on either side of him. He's pretty terrible on every level. Terrible signing and he's got to go sooner than later.

I maintain Wake will be back in a fins uniform next year w a different contract.

To the two-man wrecking crew of Ndamukong Suh and C.J. Mosley, what happened to the Dolphins in the last six games of 2014 — allowing 992 yards rushing — should never happen.

And now that the former Detroit Lions defensive tackles, the foundation of the NFL's No. 1 rushing defense last season, have been reunited with the Dolphins, fans can expect them to bring a no-nonsense mentality against teams that think they can run. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-dolphins-minicamp-0617-20150616-story.html

Well so much for expectations, have to look at the LB as well though IMO.

Sheppard is by far the worst starting MLB in pro football. And we wonder why we can't stop the run. Who in their right minds would go into a season with this guy as your centerpiece of a 4-3.

If I were running the D, I would have switched Phillips out to DE when teams started running it down Miami's throat. I'd have switched him to DE, with McCain stacked over him to rush or react.

Miami desperately, desperately, desperately needs two DEs who can hold up against the run and interior DEs who can maintain their discipline and garner decent push.

Add in the horrid LB play -- and the poor quality of Miami DBs (one good safety, the rest trash, pretty much -- Grimes is showing that the last half the season, he's toast), and wow. You have a prescription for Defensive disaster.

A 340 pound defensive tackle out to defensive end? Makes no sense.

can a 4-3 team not employ a NT type and pretend that stopping the run is important?

We need to restructure Wakes contract. When he's healthy he's easily top 3 speed rushers

put Mitchell at FB and sign the fattest DT available. would out run D be any worse?
