The Dolphins have begun summoning draft prospects that intrigue them to team headquarters, and there’s an emphasis on three need areas: receiver, linebacker and defensive back.
According to a team source, Louisville receiver DeVante Parker, Auburn receiver Sammy Coates and Southern California receiver George Farmer are among the maximum-permitted 30 non-local players being flown to South Florida to meet with coaches and executives in Davie.
Parker, a possibility for Miami’s No. 14 overall pick in the first round, caught 43 passes for 855 yards and five touchdowns last season. Coates, a potential second-rounder, caught 34 for 741 and four TDs and combines excellent speed with good size (6-1). Farmer, an early entrant and potential later round pick or free agent, caught 25 passes for 314 yards and four TDs in 2014.
The Dolphins also have invited UM’s Phillip Dorsett (36, 871, 10 TDs) and FSU’s Reshad Greene (99, 1365, 7 TDs) to audition for them and meet with coaches on their local day April 10.
The Dolphins like several other receivers, too, and keep in mind that Miami typically drafts players who visit (such as right tackle Ja’Wuan James last year) and others that don’t visit.
Among linebackers, the Dolphins booked visits with Clemson outside linebacker Vic Beasley, Georgia inside linebacker Ramik Wilson (according to walterfootball.com) and Michigan inside linebacker Jake Ryan (confirmed by a source; first reported by ESPN’s James Walker). Beasley (13 and 12 sacks the past two seasons) could be an option at No. 14 if he surprisingly slides.
Wilson, a potential mid-round pick, averaged 122 tackles and three sacks the past two seasons. Ryan, a potential mid-rounder, had 112 tackles last season.
Among the draft’s top handful of middle linebackers, Miami plans to audition UM’s Denzel Perryman later this month and sent linebackers coach Mark Duffner to Clemson to work out and dine with potential second-rounder Stephone Anthony.
The Dolphins have been closely studying a bunch of cornerbacks and safeties.
Among defensive backs scheduled for Dolphins visits, at least three are potential second-to-fourth-rounders: Utah’s Eric Rowe (can play safety or corner); Louisville safety and Miami Southridge alum Gerod Holliman (a second- or third-rounder with 14 interceptions last season) and Louisville cornerback Charles Gaines (a Miami Central alum with seven picks over the past two years).
Also booked: Minnesota safety Cedric Thompson, a potential late-rounder or free agent who wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine but was productive in college and impressive at his Pro Day.
The Dolphins don't announce draft visits, by the way.
### FSU potential mid-round tight end Nick O’Leary (17 touchdown catches, 14.0 average catch in FSU career) won’t attend UM’s local day (he has schedule conflict) but the Dolphins like him and invited him to meet with their coaches and executives April 9 at their headquarters. (He accepted.)
### Running back Steven Ridlay left his Dolphins visit today without a contract... Linebacker Jason Trusnik, whom the Dolphins showed no interest in keeping, signed with Carolina.

Thanks for posting, good stuff from our best beat writer. Too bad no Kendricks talk :(

But it is interesting that he mentions how we draft both players who visit and those who don't as well

Man I am considering Beasley a dark horse lately for our team with Vernon being a f/a and Tannenbaum praising him or even Wake getting old.

I could see a move up for him.

not having kendricks or trae waynes in for a visit makes me think we're more interested in them than we probably are. i'm suspicious!

If we don't get one of the top receivers in the 1st round, I would love to see Rashad Greene in a Fins uniform.

Keep an eye on Miami and Greene. He is flying under the radar with many Dolphin fans, but he is one of the better route runners in the draft. Although he is slight of frame he has very good hands in traffic. He has long speed but also has quick feet to get separation in press coverage. He does need to get stronger but just keep an eye on him.

i dont think any of those guys are really targets although i could see sammie coates at 47 and stephone anthony there also as well as perryman possibly...i could see nick oleary also in the 4th 5th round

not worried about who they aren't meeting with...i dont recall any jarvis landry pre draft interest last year

Wouldn't shock me. Greene fits our offense

good player underrated i have a top 50 grade but i'm not sure he fits the rac and size they want...you can line him up off the los to help him get releases off the line vs press despite the slight frame

one of the more polished wrs in the class

I can see what there is to like about Greene.

Plus feet, big catch radius for his size (Winston puts a lot of onus on his receivers with his freelancing style and Greene delivers the catch on all kinds of balls put in his area), smooth route runner who gets all his separation out of his breaks off the stem. He excels at setting up the DB and just leaving him for dead out of the break.

But the kid is tiny. He gets ragdolled in college and will be abused in the pros. Despite a good Combine 10-yd split, he's fairly pedestrian off the LOS, so I just don't see him escaping the clutches of NFL corners often enough. His breaks from routes are his trump card - I wonder how often he'll make it to the top of the stem before he gets thrown off his route. His blocking is token at best. His long speed is good but not burning.

He's a good to great college receiver. I would hesitate to say he has no chance in the pros, but I can think of better ways to use my picks than on such a slight guy who doesn't have the crazy speed to be usable in other ways than as a conventional receiver. I'd take Kenny Bell before Greene if I'm gambling on a wiry receiver who can run the full route tree, but not by a whole ton I have to admit.
