Jaelan Phillips Update & the Defensive Front

If anyone didn't catch the pressers yesterday, you might spend some time watching JP's.

Quite frankly, I found JP's attitude to be a breathe of fresh air in an offseason filled with discussion about risk, uncertainty, etc.
It's just so nice to see an element of the Dolphins that is straight-forward, no-bull and who exudes physicality and dominance.

There were of course MANY questions about JP's injuries and even his being labeled "injury-prone" in the aftermath of 2 straight season-enders.

He made very clear in multiple answers that the most recent ACL was not only far easier to fix & rehab (i.e. walking almost immediately after surgery as opposed to 4 months in the case of his Achilles) but that he's been effectively 'back to normal' for the last couple months. He also made clear that the ACL last year was a friendly-fire incident that had nothing to do with his previous Achilles injury.

If JP is truly back to normal and his recent ACL was really a freak incident (one we can essentially forget now that it's behind us), I fully expect:

(A) Phillips to return in '25 as Miami's primary edge threat.

and

(B) Miami to very likely extend Phillips given a solid year.

If that's the case, I am much more optimistic about Miami's DL. If we truly have both our Edge (JP & Chop) and both interior DL (Seiler & Grant), I think we can start feeling a lot better about going into '26 with the singular focus being on building out what remaining needs exist in the secondary.

What this means for Bradley Chubb, I'm not sure. His contract would appear to lock him in through '25 and '26 unless another team were willing to trade for him. Perhaps a bounce-back year would make that more likely? It's something to root for. A good year not only helps Miami but increases Chubb's trade value.

If indeed, Miami plans to keep a 3-man rotation of Chubb, Chop & JP through '26, it raises questions about how Weaver will make use of all the talent he'll have on his DL between what could be a strong rotation of DTs and a trio of edge rushers. Perhaps Miami has something up it's sleeve to make use of this abundance of talent?

There is nothing more devastating to an offense then a defense that is hard to impossible to stop from penetrating on what seems every down.

Obviously very doubtful all three will be on the field every down together, but how good would it be, if they proved to be that successful this year, and on crucial passing downs, those three plus Grant, Seiler were on the field, each having proved (Other then Grant who needs to prove he can do it as well as in College) they can get in the backfield quickly, and get to the QB.

I wonder.

What are the odds that all of the following happen?

- Jaelan Phillips doesn’t produce
- Bradley Chubb doesn’t produce
- Chop Robinson regresses
- Zach Seiler doesn’t produce
- Miami gets nothing out of Grayson Murphy and Mo Kamara
- Kenneth Grant is a bust
- Jordan Phillips is a bust

I think some of those are higher than you think but we will see.

If the dline don’t carry this secondary we are cooked

With the bad luck he's had the past two years he seems to have matured and understands how things can happen in life. So long as he stays healthy I think he'll do very well moving forward.
The fact that he graduated and also worked a real estate internship while he was rehabbing tells me his feet are on solid ground from a life standpoint. Football will be a means to a better end for him. Hopefully, that will be later than sooner.

I have this sneaky feeling that Miami will overachieve. Like you say, it feels like the team is due. National media is way down on the Dolphins, too, which is always a good motivator.
Wait. A positive outlook on the team? I’m glad we can count on members like you to discuss the good instead of the bad. I’m so tired of the bitching on the board.

Why not? It's June. Miami has talent. It's not out the question that the Dolphins could be good.

I like the direction the team is moving towards more physical players.

Love the optimism. Rooting for Phillips. Be aware though, he’s in a contract year and is going to pump himself up.

If the Dolphins thought his rehabilitation brought him back to 2023 form, they’d absolutely extend him in this camp instead of having to franchise him before he hits open market next offseason and price going up.

There have been no reports (yet) of extension talks so that should temper the optimism imo.

I don't think this is true at all. There are big question marks about Phillips' health and productivity post-injury. Extending him would be a massive gamble without seeing what he has left in the tank this season. I honestly would bet that even Phillips himself would prefer to play out his 5th year option so that he can prove he's still dominant and thus set himself up for a major contract, if not in Miami then somewhere else.

Agree. We all love Jaelan, but the fact is he has never put up more than 8.5 sacks a year. He's a good player that has yet to take the next step. Not ready to reward him at this point. He's disappeared in many games. Let's see him dominate for a full season before we get carried away.

I think JP is probably the most driven, hardest working player on the roster besides Julian Hill (I know some people will say this and go wtf?? but irrespective of what he shows on the field, we've heard that said about Julian by multiple players and coaches). So I think if there's anyone who can will himself to greatness, it's JP. It's just a question of whether his body will let him.

He was well on his way to dominating in '23 with 6.5 sacks in eight games. He's gonna tear it up this year

With some good luck(and Miami is DUE for some)the Fins could easily win 10-11 games and be a playoff team again.

The pass rush and Tua's health are the big keys.

I mean, with the size of grant.. he is gonna need alot of man power to stop, which tbh the zach attack is also a problem for olines.
with how chop was needin to be double covered alot during last season and now the big 2 back.. this trench on the d side is looking to be nasty.

BUT the thing I have notice in games and seasons.. if the offense is playin well, the d sucks. if the d plays well offense sucks, in any season we never have games where both units turn up to play.
this is also part of why we lose to better teams.

I am not asking for it every game, cause as nice as that would be its just a little to much of an expectation for any team, but a season were we have games were both sides of the ball ball out at times in the same game instead of this like taking turns to ball out.. i will be a happy man.. closest we have to this was second bills game, but even then in first half like one if not both the tds were to easy.. bvut second half they came to play with pressure.. til the whole well yeh poyer moment of greatness(sarcasim ofc)
