Offensive lineman Brandon Frye finds himself poised to play a key role in the Dolphins’ defense of their AFC East title.
Because of a injury to Donald Thomas, Frye lined up at starting right guard last week. The move raised the question of whether Thomas can stay healthy, and, if not, can Frye replace him?
Few people on the Dolphins roster are as familiar with Frye as the guy lined up to his left-hand side: center Jake Grove.
Grove was mainstay at Virginia Tech when Frye arrived in 2003 as a defensive end.
Since then Frye, 26, has undergone a complete transformation, thanks to a move to offensive line and countless hours in the weight room, where he set a position record with a 705-pound squat lift.
“He’s a hard-nosed guy,” Grove said. “He’s an athletic guy. He’s put on a lot of weight in a good way since I played with him.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do.”
Grove isn’t alone, considering an offensive line is only as good as its weakest link.
