I have heard and read chatter about how the dolphins are using Jake Long as a smokescreen to hide their true draft intentions. Some of it has been fueled by Ireland's choice of words in his press conference..."cornerstone of our defense."
But if Miami truly is going to draft a defensive player with the first pick, why would they be wasting so much effort and time trying to sign Jake Long? As far as we know Jake Long is the only player Miami is negotiating with. Not yet Gholston or Chris Long.
The only reason I could think why Miami would be working so hard to sign Jake Long if they don't want to keep him is if they have a deal with another team to trade him after picking him. So I think Miami truly wants Jake Long and if they don't sign him by draft day, then they may seek another direction.
