I thought Roos was 1st Alt.
Roos made the Pro Bowl as a backup.
Hmmm, I thought Ronnie and Joey were the only pro bowlers form Miami and Ronnie is just an alternate, Joey was the only starter in a Fins uni.
I think some of you are confusing alternates with backups.
Since we are talking Jake Long, lets look at the AFC Offensive Tackle position. Three tackles will suit up for the AFC during the Pro Bowl. The three tackles selected this year were, Peters, Thomas and Roos.
Now, obviously only TWO of those tackles can start the game. Peters and and Thomas got the starting nod. Roos is a backup. However, just because Roos is a backup doesn't mean he isn't going to play. He will start the game on the sideline, but will be rotated in during the game.
Ronnie MADE the Pro Bowl team as a backup also. Thomas Jones was selected as the starter, and Ronnie will be the first backup. What that means is, the first snap of the game for the AFC will feature Jones as the starting running back. Ronnie, along with Chris Johnson will rotate in during the game. All three running backs will get roughly the same on the field time. In 2002, Ricky was selected to the Pro Bowl as a backup behind Priest Holmes. As we all remember, Ricky won the Pro Bowl MVP.
Now, an alternate is NOT a Pro Bowl selection. Jake Long is a Pro Bowl alternate this year, just as Ted Ginn was a Pro Bowl alternate as kick returner last year. What that means is if a player selected to the Pro Bowl misses the game for injury, suspension or just decides not to go, they have to fill that spot. To fill that spot, they would go to the next top vote getter. If Peters, Thomas or Roos is not able to go to the game, the 4th top vote receiver would shift into one of those spots. Lets say Peters(a Pro Bowl starter) can't go. Roos would then be shifted to a starter on the team and Long would be selected to the Pro Bowl as a backup. Long was the FIRST alternate, and I believe Clady was the SECOND alternate. Meaning for Clady, he needs two of the three between Peters, Thomas and Roos not to make the trip to Hawaii.
Three QBs will make the trip to the Pro Bowl for the AFC. Favre(one of the worst selections in Pro Bowl history), Manning and Cutler. If one of those three can not go, the first Pro Bowl alternate will be called upon. In this case, Rivers would get the nod to the Pro Bowl as the first alternate. Chad Pennington is the second alternate.
As it stands today, the Dolphins have two Pro Bowl selections in Joey Porter and Ronnie Brown. By the time the game actually comes around, we will probably have three and MAYBE four.
