I know, 2nd year player aginst first. Do you think that they are comparable yet? Jake is very good. I was expecting him to dominate a little more than he is. what about everyone else? I am so happy we took long instead of vernon the ghost.

He's surpassed my expectations by miles.

The big question mark around him was his pass protection and he's excelled in that area against those speed rushers many thought he'd struggle against.

He's already one of the league's elite LTs and he's 12 games into his pro career.

And yes, I think he's right up there with Joe Thomas.

Joe Thomas can pass protect better, but he can't run block like Jake

I have never cared to compare him to others, I just think he's right now an excellent LT and will only get better. I think I happiest about the fact that he looks like the best pick of the entire 1st round ( I realize M.Ryan still has a say in that ). That doesn't happen very often, it's so easy to miss on a pick and then the 10th pick overall or something like that ends up being a better pick.

Jake Long has really been almost flawless. It's amazing how well he's done as a rookie. Equally amazing is how well he played against the Rams the other day even with a bad ankle. I don't know what Joe Thomas is doing this season, i haven't seen too much of him, but i bet it's not as good as Jake Long.

He's surpassed my expectations and I knew he'd be good (watched him anchor my Wolverines for 4 years, when he was a Sophomore and got hurt, the OL struggled), but the reality is he's not only been one of the best OTs in his rookie class, but one of the best in the NFL. The fact that the fans are recognizing this and it looks very likely that he'll be in Hawaii speaks volumes to me.

Jake hasn't even finished a season yet. IMHO, he will develop into the one of the better Left Tackles in the league, he just needs to be exposed to the best pass rushers in the league and learn from his mistakes and he is already doing that. I know one thing, the guy is tough, not "letting his team down" as he put it just because of some silly twisted ankle. Is he better than Joe Thomas? Who cares?

correct....

according to KC Joyner... Long has graded out as the best runblocking LT in 5 years.. he has a 96% success rate in run blocks... plus he gets to the second level sooooo quickly...

he doesn't have JoeTHomas's feet, thats for sure... but Jake is learning alot of NFL pass rush moves, and he hasn't made the same mistake twice all season....

hard to say whos better since jake's a rookie... but i'll tell ya... Both will be representing the AFC in the Probwol for the next 12 straight seasons...

so I'm okay with that

The biggest knock on Jake was that he would struggle against premiere pass rushers. Jake went one on one with Houston's Mario Williams and simply man handled him. Jake has easily exceeded expectations.

Mario is not known to be a speedy pass rusher such as Dwight Freeney etc. You might be referring to players who are a hybrid of linebacker and defensive end, with a physical stature to run like a linebacker and with strength of a bulldozing defensive end. Players such as Demarcus Ware, Joey Porter, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley, Justin Tuck etc.

elite lt?

hmm......

good looking rookie for sure.

but NO ONE has posted his stats, only his props.

if i am correct, he has given up 4 sacks and has 5-6
penalties for holding and false starts. i am not so sure
vernon cary's stats were better last year at lt.

he still gets suckered on that quick inside move that
seems to be his achillies heal.

i am the one who bawked at all the "he cant handle speed
rushers and will be a rt only in the nfl". now, i dont think
he will get pushed to rt, but, he hasnt looked as good against
the pass as i thought he would.

and most of it is probably technique and they will get it out of
him by next camp, hopefully. but jake long is ANYTHING but
elite at lt right now.

him grading out so hi in run blocking is a little iffy to me as this
team can not run worth poop! right, left, up the middle, it doesnt
matter! unless we catch someone off guard with the wildcat, we
are as sorry as we have EVER been running the ball.

ricky and ronnie should be a mighty tandem but the production
just is not there [outside the 'cat]. the o-line has much to do
with all this. and if jake were as dominant as some have said, we
wouldnt be getting shut down so much in the run game.

but hey! the guys i will listen to are the ones who have had to
go up against him in games. i imagine the kid is a load and fights
ya hard all game. i know several guys from other teams have
mentioned what a load he is. and that may get some pro bowl
votes from the players.

but, he still has weeknesses and i dont believe he belongs in the
pro bowl at this point. i dont think his ALL AROUND grade warrents
it yet.

jake is already probably the best run blocker in the league. NFL network flashed a stat that long had a 97% success rate on run blocks or something, which was far ahead of anyone else. year 2 for jake is going to be absolutely monstrous when he gets settled in.

Yeah I meant tackle, not guard, I should have proof read it. But anyway, he still has a long way to go but I think he'll be pro-bowl material for years to come. He has to work on his pass blocking but it will come with time.
