greetings finfans !
i'll make this short, i'll grade jake by good bad neutral play.
I've "created" a term for the new wildcat formation where ricky is in shotgun and there is cobbs and ricky besides him... if i use the term wildcat all the time it'll get confusing, so this formation will be now known (here at least !) as the Wildgun !
If i mention wildcat with no motion, it's a formation exactly like the basic one but ricky is not motionning !

1st quarter:
drive #1 (12:41)
1&10: RunLS. This is a toss to ricky. Jake doesn't pull to the outside like he did in the past weeks, instead, he attacks kelly who is the playside DT. Very good block by jake but it was in easy circumstances... he was coming almost blindside on kelly. Nonetheless he took him out of the play. Good play.
2&7 (following offsides): Pass. Jake is facing a speedy guy who tries to run past him. Jake gets none of it, shows great foot work and speed as he drops back and takes his man 4-5 yards behind pennington. Flawless good play.
3&2 (following another offsides lol): Pass. Here's a play where some might think jake got beat. Chad drops back and starts moving slowly towards jake's side because our RG is getting beat and our QB wants to stay away from him. ultimately, chad scrambles to the right as he sees the big DT fall right in front of him. Jake, on his part, engages the defensive end, doesn't get beat by the first move and then makes an good job on a spin move to the outside. People might think chad scrambled because of him but really, when you consider chad was moving in jake's direction and that chad started running before jake got "beat", it's not clearly not his fault. And IMO, jake didn't even got beat. the DE ran away from 77 because he saw chad scrambling but if chad wouldve stood there in the pocket, i'm pretty sure jake would've stepped in his face and avoided the sack. I have to give jake a good play grade, he sustained a 4 second pass protection and got the best of the DE on two finesse moves. Good play
1&10: RunRS. Jake pulls all the way to the right side, turns upfield to block the OLB. This play is a "WOW-ing" play IMO, he had good speed and finished with a great block to pave the way for a 13 yard gain. Good play
1&10: RunRS. Jake doesn't do a whole lot, the play is on the opposite side. Still, he displays great effort and prevents his guy from going in pursuit with his efficient blocking. So i'll give a good play
2&7: Pass. Jake's guy fakes his way to the outside and cuts back inside. Jake steps in his faces and takes away any chance for a good pass rush. "Shut down" block if you could name it that way hehe. Very nice play.
3&2: Pass. This play is a short pass that requires little time for chad. Still, jake and smiley do a good job of protecting their quarterback from the DT and DE who are exectuting a "stunt". GOod play.
1&10: Pass. Jake gets a little help from fasano who gives a nice wack to the DE before releasing to run his route. Nice play by jake, his guy never threatened the QB. Good play.
1&10: RunLS. This is the Ted Ginn reverse ! As a matter of fact, the purpose of this play was to make it look like a power run to the right, so jake and smiley pulled to disturb the LBs' and safeties' read. It worked out pretty well hehe ! Jake's impact on the play is preeeeeetty low so i won't rate the play... it's like rating a cornerback on a quarterback sneak...what's the purpose ! lol ! (** atta boy ted !)

1&10: RunRS. Jake chop blocks tommy kelly and it works out good. it wasn't an easy block because the play is on the right side of the formation so jake has to get to tommy and then plunge effectively in his legs... Good play.
2&12: RunRS. Jake and smiley double team Tommy kelly. Smiley had a hard time, kelly was able to run across the field and end up on the ballcarrier (even though the play was already made by another raider). overrall bad play by everyone up front, they got outmuscled/outplayed but jake's job wasnt so bad, he made a nice job but smiley didn't do his part. I'll give a neutral play to jake.
3&10: Pass. Here's another play where some might think jake blew it. Jake doesn't engage the DE at first, fasano gives him a little push. Jake is now in a hard situation i've already talked about a week or two: lots of space around him and the rusher is 3-4 yards from him. This is a perfect situation for a guy who knows how to beat a lineman. Jake does a tremendous job, countering the first move to the inside and then staying with his man to prevent any threat. People might think jake blew it because chad decided to throw himself to the ground and take the sack, but as a matter of fact, there was no pressure whatsoever...it took about 2 seconds for chad to get hit after he decided he wouldn't throw it... very weird play by chad, especially when you see in the screen that there was a checkdown open on the right... anyways. Good play by jake.
2nd Quarter:
Drive #3 (14:52):
1&10: Pass. Good pass protection, nothing fancy/hard. Good play.
2&1: RunMiddle. This is a draw play and jake makes a very good job blocking his guy. He lets him go upfield and gives him that agressive push at the right time just before the defender realizes it's a running play. Good play.
1&10: RunLS. The tape starts at the middle of the play and he's zooming as the play is going on so it's really hard to see what's really happening... but from what i saw, jake's guy disrupted the play and was amongst the two raiders who were in the backfield for the tackle. I'll have to give a bad play even though i'm hardly reluctant because i haven't seen the play very well.
2&13: RunRS. Jake gets a little beat but it's understandable, the play is backside and the usual reaction for a defender is to engage the lineman and run through the LOS in pursuit or even further downfield... in this scenario, the guy shoot upfield and jake lost him a little bit but he wasn't able to make the play. i'll have to give a good play because he made up for his mistake and showed good effort coming back for a block. It has little impact on the play but when you have guys preventing pursuit, that's how you break big ones. Good play
3&10: Pass.Very good pass protection by jake. he faces tommy kelly because he and the DE made a "stunt". Jake outmuscled one very talented DT of this league, very good play.
1&10: WildGunS. Run RS. Good block by jake, he kept his guy away from the play and that's all you ask for !
2&6: Wildcat. Jake pulls and does a VERY nice block on kirk morrison. Unfortunately, ronnie fumbles the damn BALL !!! good play by jake nonetheless.
Drive #4 (8:17)
1&5: Pass. very good play by jake. First off let me say there was an overaload blitz on his side. He blocks one guy and to top it all he tries to block the blitzing safety near the end, AT THE SAME TIME. He slowed him down but it wasn't enough obivously... Good play by jake. (the safety was fasano's guy... )
2&11: Pass. jake does a good job on what seems to be a lost defender lol. The guy is running around because he bites on the playaction and then turns to the left side to pursue ricky who has the ball. Good play by jake, keeping him out of chad and ricky's laps.
3&16: Run. Draw play in the middle. Jake once again plays the draw perfectly. He's really improved in that department IMO... maybe this staff plays it differently than michigan and he had to adapt, either way, he's doing a good job now. Good play.
Drive #5 (1:03)
1&10: Pass. Shutting down that left side... good play !
2&1: RunRS. good play by jake, nothing fancy or really hard, it was a draw play to the right.
1&10: RunLS. They try the same exaxt reverse with ted ginn, like the other one, jake's imput was very minimal so i won't rate the play.
2&8: Pass. Jake could've done better, i thought the rusher crushed the pocket a little bit more than usual but in the end, he wasn't on chad's back and this play ended in a completion. Good play.
1&10: RunRS. Draw play, jake almost has nothing to do, no one is rushing him (they are in a prevent defence). He runs upfield to block someone but everyone is in pursuit to the right side of the offence to tackle ronnie. I won't rate this play.
3rd quarter.

1&10: RunLS. Jake and smiley scoop block the defensive tackle. Basically, jake's assignment is to help smiley to eventually turn upfield and block a Linebacker. Jake did a very good job on his first duty but he got outran by the linebacker (who made the tackle). Bad play by jake, blocking that linebacker was more important than pounding the linemen
2&9: Wildcat. RunLS. Jake is the TE on the right side. Excellent one on one block from jake on the defensive end. The running back chose another hole so his block was overshadowed but he did a tremendous job. Good play
3&3: Pass. Excellent one on one blocking by jake. Flawless good play.
On a sidenote, satele was the whole problem of this play, he choses to help smiley instead of what seems to be ndukwe... result ? ndukwe gets beat and gets in the face of chad. Some might say it was EK's fault but what i really don't like is seeing satele failing in his attempt to help smiley. I mean...they were two on the guy and they got beat, come on, wake up ! (it was mostly satele's fault, the defender slid to the left so smiley wasn't on him at that point) ... in the end, the pressure on chad caused by satele/ndukwe made him throw that incompletion

1&10: Pass. Okaaaay.. this is the safety..
first things first, yes, jake got beat, but for one stupid reason: his right foot got tangled up in smiley's left foot. Result: jake falls down and his player makes ½ a sack. The safety was going to happen even if jake didn't get beat, the DE on the other side was coming way to fast for chad to do anything. I'm going to give a neutral play to jake because i really didn't like how smiley played this. He initially helped jake but he changed of direction to help satele who was doing an excellent job. When smiley made that switch, he made jake trip and all of a sudden, a guy who is double teamed finds himself free. Some might feel different but i have to give a neutral play
Drive #8 (5:52)
1&10: Pass. Jake gets help from fasano to block the defensive end and succeed in their assignment. Good play.
2&10: Wildcat. Sweep to the right. Jake is the TE on the right. I really didn't like jake's play here. He couldn't avoid his player from pursuing williams to the sideline, thus creating a smaller crease for ricky. He also failed to get a good push upfield and pound his guy. Bad play by jake.
3&7: Pass. Good pass protection one on one against #98 richardson (jake has had all sorts of problems with him... he's a very talented player that might be on the rise, well, if he keeps playing like i've seen him play. )
Jake has a little problem handling the bull rush but he does an efficient job. Good play.
1&10: Wildcat(basic formation without ricky motionning). Run LS.
Jake pulls all the way to the right side and does a nice job helping out vernon with #98 (again). Good play, he couldn't really have done more, everyone in his reach was blocked. there was good yardage, good play.
2&2: RunRS. This is a counter play. Jake doesn't have a hard assignment but he prevented his player from getting pursuit. Good play.
1&10: RunLS. Jake does a very nice one on one block against kalimba edwards. The play went nowhere but it was not jake's fault at all.
2&9: Pass. Good battle going on. The DE executes a total of 3 moves on jake. Our LT did a very good job on the first two and the third one was a push... let's say that jake was blocking him but if chad held on to the ball any longer it might've been ugly. Jake gave him 3 seconds and it was just enough for a completion. Good play.
1&10: Pass. Good job by jake. nothing fancy, the play was a quick pass (incomplete) so there's nothing to it really. Nonetheless, jake made his block, good play.
2&10: RunRS. Jake pulls to the left, makes a textbook block in open field on a linebacker, cobbs gets in for a touchdown. Great play !
Drive #9 (0:47)
1&10: Wildcat with no motion. Jake double teamed kelly with smiley and they really did an incredible job of paving a highway for ronnie. Good play.
4th Quarter
1&10: RunRS. This is a sweep to ricky. Jake's imput so pretty minimal and his job is to block the DT who is slanting towards the playside... so i won't rate the play.
1&10: Wildcat with no motion. Smiley and Jake double team the DT lined up between them. Two things happen here: smiley releases a little too early from the DT to attack the linebacker, the other thing is jake is a little slow to get position on the DT to be able to block him alone. I'll give a neutral play because they share the responsibility and because we still got 4 yards...
2&6: Wildcat with no motion. RunRS. Jake pulls to the left and i really wonder what the hell he thought here. When he gets to the left side, there's a 2 yard gap and the OLB is coming to make the play, earlier in this game jake would attack him but now he sees him and helps vernon with his player, result ? that linebacker made the tackle... bad play
3&5: RunMiddle. Draw play. Jake does an excellent job on a draw play. He sells it, and gives a "hercules-ic" push at the right time. Good play.
Drive #10 (7:57)
1&10: Pass. This is a fake toss to the left, and chad throws a WR screen to davone bess. Jake does a nice job, the play is not executed as fast as some might think and jake wa successful blocking his guy. Good play
2&10: RunRS. This is the FB sweep to cobbs that went for a Touchdown. Once again jake pulls and once again does nothing good. He has the option to help Ndukwe who's having his hands full with kelly or to go upfield and block a linebacker... personnaly, i would've liked him to go upfield but i can understand that kelly seemed like the biggest threat, but man, when you're coming in as an extra blocker you are suposed to give him a hard time. Jake did not. Bad play !
3&9: Pass. Jake made a good job in the first 2 seconds, keeping up with a speed rusher. Once the raider got behind chad, he quickly changed directions and that's when jake lost him. That caused chad to scramble and if we wouldn't have been lucky, catching that jump ball, people would be calling for jake on that play. Well, i will ! BAD PLAY !
1&10: Wildcat with no motion. RunRS. Jake and smiley once again do a very nice job of pounding that LOS from one side to the other. Good play.
2&8: RunLS. Sweep to ricky. Jake and fasano double team the DE, yet, he still makes the tackle... on a short notice, this is after the raiders took the lead with a punt return...let's see how our LT responded after a so-so game ... !
1&10: Pass. Jake starts off with great pass protection. first down ! Good play !
1&10: Pass. same story, Good play !
1&10: RunLS. Jake and smiley double team kelly again, not their best play together today but they managed to take out kelly from the picture and pave a little road. Good play.
2&9: Pass. Chad throws the ball in the nick of time. Jake's job is not real hard but he still provides the protection needed ! Good play.
3&9: Pass. Jake faces richardson and does a better job than earlier against his bull rush. Good protection, good play.
4&5: Pass. Kelly and richardson perform a stunt, smiley and long adjust perfectly and shut down the left side from any pass rushing threat. Very good play in what was the play of the game for our offence. (IMO)
1&10: RunLS. Jake and smiley double team kelly again and when justin releases to block kirk morrisson, jake stills pounds the DT. Excellent play.
(notice the little tap on jake's *** by kelly... a "you got me there fella" kind of tap haha
2&8: RunLS. Sweep to ronnie. Remember that play where jake and fasano misblocked a guy who made the tackle? well, as jake did everything wrong last time around, now he does it perfectly. He gets a better start, helps fasano effectively and when his block is good for nothing he gets upfield and Whacks kirk morrisson almost on his rear end with a single push. Very nice play !
3&3: RunRS. very nice block by jake, even though it had little impact... good play.
CONCLUSION:
45/55 Good plays
7/55 Bad plays
3/55 neutral plays
7 bad plays is the most jake has had based on my observations in a game this year... this said, most of them were coming from plays where jake pulled and made a trap for a run to the right side. Those plays are not common for Tackles and we haven't seen jake make plays like this a whole lot earlier this year. Time will tell if he'll learn and become better at it but right now i'd say about 50% of those plays end up being bad for him.
Jake's job was simple in this game, double team kelly. The game plan was focused on him and kirk morrisson (well, for the running game) and IMO the players responsible to block them made a very good job overall, smiley and long mostly (ndukwe got kelly in his face a few times and it was ugly... i've been higher than most people here on EK because i saw good plays when i did those analysis, but today he had the worst game i've seen him play... of course, i haven't focused on him so it's a general impression based on a few observations.. )
Jake did OK on the pass protection, there was this miscue in the end zone for the safety but really... i'd blame smiley and bad luck more than anything on that play. Jake struggled on two other plays if my memory is right... it's not that bad... on a sidenote, i was amazingly surprised by the raiders' defensive end. I didn't know much about them and they had a helluva game. One of them, maybe both, will go to the probowl more than once in their career...
In the end, jake had a decent game but i'd say he has to improve on his "pulling skills". The one thing i'll remember about this game though is how jake responded on the last drive, the staff called a play jake busted earlier in the 4th quarter and jake executed it perfectly, he had 8/8 good plays on the most critical drive of the game. Good players always play good, okay, but they step up when the time comes and jake did just that.

3&7: Pass. Good pass protection one on one against #98 richardson (jake has had all sorts of problems with him... he's a very talented player that might be on the rise, well, if he keeps playing like i've seen him play. )
Jake has a little problem handling the bull rush but he does an efficient job. Good play.
1&10: Wildcat(basic formation without ricky motionning). Run LS.
Jake pulls all the way to the right side and does a nice job helping out vernon with #98 (again). Good play, he couldn't really have done more, everyone in his reach was blocked. there was good yardage, good play.
2&2: RunRS. This is a counter play. Jake doesn't have a hard assignment but he prevented his player from getting pursuit. Good play.
1&10: RunLS. Jake does a very nice one on one block against kalimba edwards. The play went nowhere but it was not jake's fault at all.
2&9: Pass. Good battle going on. The DE executes a total of 3 moves on jake. Our LT did a very good job on the first two and the third one was a push... let's say that jake was blocking him but if chad held on to the ball any longer it might've been ugly. Jake gave him 3 seconds and it was just enough for a completion. Good play.
1&10: Pass. Good job by jake. nothing fancy, the play was a quick pass (incomplete) so there's nothing to it really. Nonetheless, jake made his block, good play.
2&10: RunRS. Jake pulls to the left, makes a textbook block in open field on a linebacker, cobbs gets in for a touchdown. Great play !

1&10: Wildcat with no motion. Jake double teamed kelly with smiley and they really did an incredible job of paving a highway for ronnie. Good play.
4th Quarter
1&10: RunRS. This is a sweep to ricky. Jake's imput so pretty minimal and his job is to block the DT who is slanting towards the playside... so i won't rate the play.
1&10: Wildcat with no motion. Smiley and Jake double team the DT lined up between them. Two things happen here: smiley releases a little too early from the DT to attack the linebacker, the other thing is jake is a little slow to get position on the DT to be able to block him alone. I'll give a neutral play because they share the responsibility and because we still got 4 yards...
2&6: Wildcat with no motion. RunRS. Jake pulls to the left and i really wonder what the hell he thought here. When he gets to the left side, there's a 2 yard gap and the OLB is coming to make the play, earlier in this game jake would attack him but now he sees him and helps vernon with his player, result ? that linebacker made the tackle... bad play
3&5: RunMiddle. Draw play. Jake does an excellent job on a draw play. He sells it, and gives a "hercules-ic" push at the right time. Good play.
Drive #10 (7:57)
1&10: Pass. This is a fake toss to the left, and chad throws a WR screen to davone bess. Jake does a nice job, the play is not executed as fast as some might think and jake wa successful blocking his guy. Good play
2&10: RunRS. This is the FB sweep to cobbs that went for a Touchdown. Once again jake pulls and once again does nothing good. He has the option to help Ndukwe who's having his hands full with kelly or to go upfield and block a linebacker... personnaly, i would've liked him to go upfield but i can understand that kelly seemed like the biggest threat, but man, when you're coming in as an extra blocker you are suposed to give him a hard time. Jake did not. Bad play !
3&9: Pass. Jake made a good job in the first 2 seconds, keeping up with a speed rusher. Once the raider got behind chad, he quickly changed directions and that's when jake lost him. That caused chad to scramble and if we wouldn't have been lucky, catching that jump ball, people would be calling for jake on that play. Well, i will ! BAD PLAY !
1&10: Wildcat with no motion. RunRS. Jake and smiley once again do a very nice job of pounding that LOS from one side to the other. Good play.
2&8: RunLS. Sweep to ricky. Jake and fasano double team the DE, yet, he still makes the tackle... Jake wasn't fast enough and that's understandable, kalimba edwards, which i've rarely seen play, is amzing me with his great speed. But jake should've went upfield the moment he knew he could've had no impact with this block. Bad play ....
3&3: Pass. Excellent protection by jake. Good play !

1&10: RunLS. Jake and smiley double team kelly again, not their best play together today but they managed to take out kelly from the picture and pave a little road. Good play.
2&9: Pass. Chad throws the ball in the nick of time. Jake's job is not real hard but he still provides the protection needed ! Good play.
3&9: Pass. Jake faces richardson and does a better job than earlier against his bull rush. Good protection, good play.
4&5: Pass. Kelly and richardson perform a stunt, smiley and long adjust perfectly and shut down the left side from any pass rushing threat. Very good play in what was the play of the game for our offence. (IMO)
1&10: RunLS. Jake and smiley double team kelly again and when justin releases to block kirk morrisson, jake stills pounds the DT. Excellent play.
(notice the little tap on jake's *** by kelly... a "you got me there fella" kind of tap haha
2&8: RunLS. Sweep to ronnie. Remember that play where jake and fasano misblocked a guy who made the tackle? well, as jake did everything wrong last time around, now he does it perfectly. He gets a better start, helps fasano effectively and when his block is good for nothing he gets upfield and Whacks kirk morrisson almost on his rear end with a single push. Very nice play !
3&3: RunRS. very nice block by jake, even though it had little impact... good play.

7 bad plays is the most jake has had based on my observations in a game this year... this said, most of them were coming from plays where jake pulled and made a trap for a run to the right side. Those plays are not common for Tackles and we haven't seen jake make plays like this a whole lot earlier this year. Time will tell if he'll learn and become better at it but right now i'd say about 50% of those plays end up being bad for him.
Jake's job was simple in this game, double team kelly. The game plan was focused on him and kirk morrisson (well, for the running game) and IMO the players responsible to block them made a very good job overall, smiley and long mostly (ndukwe got kelly in his face a few times and it was ugly... i've been higher than most people here on EK because i saw good plays when i did those analysis, but today he had the worst game i've seen him play... of course, i haven't focused on him so it's a general impression based on a few observations.. )
Jake did OK on the pass protection, there was this miscue in the end zone for the safety but really... i'd blame smiley and bad luck more than anything on that play. Jake struggled on two other plays if my memory is right... it's not that bad... on a sidenote, i was amazingly surprised by the raiders' defensive end. I didn't know much about them and they had a helluva game. One of them, maybe both, will go to the probowl more than once in their career...
In the end, jake had a decent game but i'd say he has to improve on his "pulling skills". The one thing i'll remember about this game though is how jake responded on the last drive, the staff called a play jake busted earlier in the 4th quarter and jake executed it perfectly, he had 8/8 good plays on the most critical drive of the game. Good players always play good, okay, but they step up when the time comes and jake did just that.
