Believe In Miami
For the last couple of weeks, Jake long has been scrutinised, looked under the microscope play after play. Unfortunately, i've seen no in depth analysis of his play here on the regular forum, maybe in the VIP section though there are posts of that nature.
Why is this analysis better than ones we've seen on blogs or personal impressions you might have of the game ? I've been playing football for a long time at the defensive end position and had a great friendship with my headcoach, he often thought me fundamentals and designs of his offensive line so i understood more what offences were doing, trying to enhance my instincts and roam around the ball through "video practices", so i'm used to watching game tape and analyzing blocking schemes. I have watched each snap about 3-4 times of the new england game, focusing on jake, to see what really happened on every play. I've come up with some observations many have not noticed and i'm thrilled to share my knowledge with you. Jake will be graded by bad, neutral or good plays, there are 26 snaps in the first half. For quick readers, i've bolded the highlights of my observations that you might not have noticed yourself, i hope you enjoy this:

1st quarter:
-1&10 (13:30): pass, nothing much to say, seymour crashed inside to attack smiley and no one was coming from the outside, Jake steps in and helps smiley, easy play, good play
-2&4 (12:53): run, great play by jake and justin, pounding richard seymour 5 yards downfield, this said, ronnie chose the wrong hole, the play goes for almost nothing but if he ran on the left side, it was a 10 yard gain, good play
-3&2 (12:07): pass, nothing to say, adalius thomas gets distracted by ronnie and by the time he engages jake, the pass is thrown, neutral play
-------------------
-1&10 (6:13): pass, jake faces Mike Vrabel on the outside. good battle going on, mike actually gets a good push through jake but Long provides enough time (3 seconds) for the ball to get off, i'll mark this as a bad play though because if justin smiley hadn't come in to help jake, vrabel would've undoubtebly disrupted chad's motion or made a sack if the pass took one more second to get out, another way to notice it is chad is awfully unaccurate on a wide open camarillo and it's obviously because he felt the pocket collapse, bad play
-2&10 (6:08): run, jake steps for smiley who pulls to the right side, jake does a good job to slide in and hold off seymour along with fasano, good play
-3&6 (5:29): pass, good protection on adalius thomas even though the patriot player did not provide great effort, he seemingly stopped his rush to prepare to jump in order to tip the ball but the ball didn't went in his direction, good play
-1&10 (4:52): pass, good protection on jarvis green. Jake stopped using his feet at the end of his pass protection and that is poor technique, easily coachable though. In the end, he kept his player off chad all along, good play
-1&10 (4:34) run, draw play out of the shotgun on the right side. Jake looks like he's doing fine here, but he's actually not. The idea of a draw play is to sell the pass and create running lanes, Vernon carey does it perfectly, opening a lane for Ronnie brown. Jake makes a little step back and rushes to vrabel, blocking him. Ronnie ran right side because of two things, Carey selling the pass and seymour dirupting the left side. ( Ndukwe blocked Vince Wilfork one on one like a probowler BTW). The left side offered nothing for brown, Smiley got beat by seymour and jake wasn't opening anything. The play was obviously designed for brown to go left side, they put the slot back there, crossing at the right through the linebackers to misdirect them, and if you look closely, satele gets upfield to block a Linebacker and seals him off to the right side. The real problem is on smiley who got beat badly, forcing brown to use the big lane created by carey and ndukwe, so i'll give a neutral play to jake here.
-2&5 (3:54) pass, there's a HUGE misconception of the play here by the part of many observers.
The play is a playaction, faking a toss to ronnie brown to the left and throwing a deep post to fasano, behing the linebackers. People thought: Whew ! ronnie was there to block vrabel, why in the hell jake left him unblocked?
well people, it's a designed play. you see jake making a step forward on seymour, giving him a push to sell the run play (linebackers make their read on the linemen, they step forward, it's a run, they step back, it's a pass... therefore if you want to have a wide open post-pattern from your TE, you need to make those linebackers think, with in example a playaction). Meanwhile, ronnie brown is blocking vrabel right after the fake toss. Jake drops backs and helps both smiley on seymour and ronnie on vrabel. this might seem like a busted play to some but it was designed that way and Jake did an excellent job. Good play.
-1&goal (3:13) Run. Jake blocks seymour who is lined up outside, he makes a very efficient block and fasano comes along to help jake. Once fasano has fully engaged seymour you see jake go to the second level and block harrisson. This is commonly called a "scoop-block" which is designed to double team the guy on the line and eventually release one blocker downfield to attack linebackers or a safety. Jake and fasano do a great job here. Good play.
-2&goal (2:33) Run. Wildcat formation, Jake is lined up as TE on the right side. Jake doesn't have to do much here, this is man-on-man blocking and jake's player shoots upfield, the only thing he has to do is seal of the corner which creates the huge running lane and a touchdown. Even though it wasn't a hard play, it's a good one.
2nd quarter:
-1&10 (11:26) Pass. Jake faces seymour and wins another battle, flawless. Good play.
-1&10 (10:48) Run. Jake blocks jarvis green here and makes a good job. Even though he doesn't drive him a lot downfield, he holds his ground and doesn't allow him to go far. His play might be shadowed here because the play went his way and for little yardage, but the real reason for failure is David martin matched up against Adalius thomas on the edge. Easy matchup for the big patriot defender. Overrall, i have to give jake long a "good play" grade.
-2&4 (10:04) Pass. Jake faces green again, who is lined up inside of jake. Nothing really hard here, jake wins the battle on another flawless play. Good play
-1&10 (9:10) Pass. Quick hitch to the WR. Jake takes a sted forward to make it look like a running play, and then punches the lineman on his shoulder HARD, i mean, really hard. Green almost fell over. nothing really amazing here, though i really like the agressiveness he showed. good play
-2&6 (8:54) Pass. fake toss to the left side and wr screen to the right. Jake has an easy job here because green thinks it's a toss his side and by the time he realizes it's a pass, jake is blocking him and the pass is thrown. good play nonetheless, he made his block.
-3&1 (8:25) Run. Here is a play where people think jake made a great play, but he just got lucky. the play was designed to go inside, they pulled the Right guard and he wasn't going for the EMOL (end man on the line) , he went for the ILB. another way to see this is look at jake's feet, he settles them to try and seal green outside. Green plays it great and makes a rip on jake, taking position inside to disrupt the play. although jake got beat, he didn't stop and kept blocking and it paid off. Jake knew he was beat and continued his block on green but inside, ronnie adjusted his trajectory and went offtackle for the touchdown. Jake was beat by green and just got fortunate ronnie saw what he saw... he was also lucky no one was there because it should've been a 1 yard gain at most. Even though it's a touchdown, it is a bad play.
-------------------------
-1&10 (4:49) Run. sweep to ricky out of the wildcat. Jake shows great quickness here as he reachs out to help david martin block vrabel. Jake isn't really usefull here, he drives vrabel towards the sideline but there's just a guard inside jake to block pursuit, so jake actually leads vrabel to the sideline where ricky feels he has the best chance to gain yardage. It's not designed well at all and it will be corrected soon enough, you'll see before end of the half. I'll give jake a good play here because he showed tremendous quickness, but there's nothing to it really.
-2&7 (4:20) Pass. Jake has seymour on his inside and no one else, he gets help from smiley and they jam the probowler effectively. *** notice how the pats don't respect chad's arm, they have 5 guys dropping in short areas, it struck me so i guess that's why i'm mentionning it... nonetheless it was completed :d-day:
-1&10 (3:38) Pass. Tremendous read by jake here, it's a probowler's eyes. Seymour is lined up to his outside and during the snap count, adalius thomas comes towards the LOS slowly and rushes the passer. jake gives a push to seymour and quickly notices thomas and picks the blitz up, blocking him effectively. A + play here
-2&in (3:05) Run. Great play driving seymour 5 yards downfield and giving space for ronnie to get the first down. Good play
-1&10 (2:22) Pass. Jake is lined up at TE on the right side. Some might think he blew up this play but it was designed to let Adalius thomas to the Running back. i'll give him the nod for sticking to his assignment because if someone was executing a late blitz, chad was dead. Good play.
-1&10 (2:00) Run. We see that sweep to ricky again, and this time the coaches have adjusted pretty well. Jake is still lined up at TE on the right side. Instead of double teaming the EMOL, jake goes downfield to block a linebacker. good block, good play, going for much more yardage than the first try just because of that simple adustment.
-1&10 (1:42) Run. Draw play. once again, jake doesn't really sells the draw play, but i've noticed why. By the time he turns his shoulders like a pass rush and his man realizes it's a draw play, jake is in position to drive the player to the sideline, lateraly. He has the strenght to do so pretty easily. This is one way to play the Draw and it was quite effective. Here, he blocks #50 (??) pretty effectively and i have to take back the critizism i had on his play on draws. good play
-2&8 (1:11) Pass. I was not able to find out who it was, but jake makes an excellent play. Like lineman are coached, he turns his shoulders once the player is on the same yard as he is and then "washes" (follow the rusher and keep him from cutting inside) the rusher out of the play, behind the quarterback. Solid technically, great great play.
-1&goal (1:03) Run. Wildcat, Jake is lined up at TE on the right side. Along with carey, they drive Ty Warren 5 yards back and jake does most of the job while carey releases to block a linebacker. Touchdown, Great play.
Conclusion of 1st half:
This sums up the first half. 22/26 plays were good, 2 others being neutral and 2 others being bad. Overall, jake's performance as a rookie against this front is pretty amazing from what i've seen in the first half. 2 bad plays where one turned out to be a touchdown...
Hope you guys enjoyed this, it takes a lot of time and that is why i will not go into the second half just yet... if i get a lot of positive feedback i'll go further into second half... you never know, if this thing becomes popular i might just do it every game.
EDIT: after the success this post has had, i'll obviously make the second half, it should be posted around tuesday if everything bolds well ! I've been asked by some to make this week in and week out and i've accepted the challenge, other members were asking for the whole oline evaluation and while i'd be thrilled to do it, i probably won't be able to find time to do it... just one half of jake's play took me a little less than 2 hours... i might do it sometimes but it won't be a weekly thing unfortunately
EDIT:
Hello people, here's the second part you might be waiting for... !
3rd quarter:
-1&10(15:00) Run. Jake has seymour in front of him and A.Thomas on the outside. Smiley blocks seymour and jake sidesteps to reach #96 and engage him. Adalius gets inside position afterwards but jake reacts well and drives him a couple yards back. Good play.
-2&10(14:18) Run. Jake is lined up at TE on the left. Jake engages ty warren but does an "ok" job. What i really dislike here is that he stopped running his feet, therefore failing to really drive back warren or keep him out of the play. I'll give a neutral play because overrall it wasn't that bad but i'm pretty critical when it comes to footwork. Neutral play.
-3&5(13:38) Pass. Jake had seymour inside. This is a bootleg to the right side so jake has a real hard job to do. The protection slides to the right so it creates a huge opportunity/gap for seymour who is lined up basically between jake and smiley. Smiley looks for a threat to his right and it's pretty much ok because it's his assigment, but this leaves jake alone, reaching for a block on seymour that crashes inside quickly. i'll give a good play grade because even though it wasn't pretty and perfect, seymour didn't disrupt the play and it was a very, VERY tough task for mr.long. Good play
-------------------------- (end of drive)
1&10(12:11) Pass. Jake is lined up at TE on the left side. Nothing much, four man rush against 6 blockers. Jake and smiley take care of seymour pretty easily, good play.
1&10(11:33) Run. Best play i've seen of jake in the whole game from a physical standpoint. This is a run designed to go in the "B" gap right between jake and smiley. seymour is lined up nose on jake. This is a 1 on 1 block and jake basically drives seymour back, turns his shoulders (which are Olinemen coached to do in order to open lanes) and takes seymour completely out of the play, he even treats himself with a pancake before the end of the play. A + + + play here.
2&3(10:55) Run. jake has to block Adalius who is way outside. pretty good block and you get a feel of jake's strenght already. Adalius runs around jake halfway in the play instead of shedding the block like defenders are coached to do. adalius was able to run around him because once again jake stopped his feet and thomas had too much speed... i wouldn't expect jake to do much better than he did here, it was a run designed inside and they made the first down. Adalius was out of the play so in the end i'll give him a good play grade but i had to mention the footwork once again.. if you haven't noticed yet my focus is really on that aspect hehe
-1&10(10:11) Run. jake has to block adalius who is dropping in coverage. jake isn't even on the playside but he sticks to his assignment and makes the block, nothing hard but gotta love the effort. Good play.
-2&7(9:31) Run. Late false start on the play, but we got to see it was going to be a run and jake was doing fine, blocking vrabel on the edge. I won't rate the play though, because almost everyone stopped playing at the whistle ...
-2&12(9:09) screen pass. Jake gets caught here. Harrisson comes slowly to the LOS, behing adalius thomas, which is why jake didn't block #37. Jake didn't even know he was there, he was hidden behind the big bodied thomas. fortunately, it was a screen because otherwise it was a sack. i'll give a neutral play to jake here because usually it's up to the quarterback to see those things and make line calls. Chad obviously didn't care about the protection because it was a screen pass so he knew the pass would come out before any defender came to him. Neutral play
-1&10(8:24) Run. nothing much, jake is on the backside but he still bulls a player , good effort, good play.
2&11(7:50) Pass. weird play here. 5 man rush, 6 blcokers. green is between jake and smiley, adalius thomas is outside jake. green gets excellent penetration through the outside shoulder of smiley, once he's far enough upfield, adalius cuts inside ... this is a common play called a stunt, which is designed to switch responsabilities between the DT and the DE and confuse the oline. Here, it worked. In order to counter this, smiley and long had to exchange players, but they didn't. Smiley stayed on green and did not pick up thomas. but the same can be said about jake who didn't pick up green and tried to stay with thomas. result of the play is a scramble outside the pocket and luckily a completion, but this was a busted play by smiley/long. Who to blame ? not being a homer here but i'd say smiley is guilty... smiley didn't let green go to jake and kept the left tackle away from thomas by being in the way, so i have to give him a neutral play.
1&10(7:04) Run. Jake is backside, but he still takes care of green, good play.
2&9(6:25)Pass. Hitch pass so there's nothing much to it. The job, rather easy, was done. Good play.
3&3(5:52)Pass. This is the wildcat passing touchdown. Jake is lined up at TE on the right side and doesn't have a big job (the play went to the left). It struck me on that play how much the guy plays 100% on every play... it's been 3 straight plays where his blocks have little impact on the play but he still goes out there trying to knock people out.. it's been like that all game long. He's not taking plays off at all and that's a big positive. Good play.
-------------------------
1&10(3:15)pass. Jake is taking on a speedrusher i cant identify... (fifty something... black player, big frame). Good initial contact, the patriot makes a hand move and gets past jake a little bit but 77 is quick to recover and washes the guy out of reach for a sack. Good play
2&9(2:36)Run. good battle between jake and seymour. good push on richard but he still makes the play because there was no running room inside. Ronnie bounced outside and landed into seymour's arms. Jake's effort and his block wasn't that bad, it was the overrall execution of the blocking up front that was ugly. i'll give the nod to jake here, knowing it was a first down and he did an ok job **also notice the poor block of david martin on adalius thomas.. no effort, poor technique, yuk yuk yuk.
1&10(1:52)run: Jake is TE on the right side. The play goes left but once again jake provides effort blocking vrabel and not taking this play off. good play
2&2(1:05)Run: Jake totally whiffs on green who is lined up outside of the dolphin tackle. as soon as the play starts, jake bulls to green who makes a quick, shifty swim move outside jake, takes position in the backfield and makes the tackle on the ball carrier. Worst play of the game for jake.
3&in(0:23)Run. FB dive behing jake who provides excellent push on the d-lineman (unable to identify unfortunately), first down, good play.
4th quarter:
1&10(15:00)Run. This is the wildcat 60yard TD. Jake is lined up at TE on the right side with ty warren lined up nose on in front of him. this is an excellent 1 on 1 block, driving his feet, pushing green a yard back and then turning his shoulders to the outside to create the huge running lane that created the touchdown. i'll give him a 95% grade here, he would've had 100% if he had moved his feet a little more and made a bigger hole... very good play by jake nonetheless, probably his 3rd best of the game.
-------------------------
1&10(14:08)Run. Smiley pulls to the right. Jakes slides to the right, blocking seymour and keeping him out of the play. Good play.
2&6(13:25)Run. Jake has to go directly to the 2nd level to block ILB mayo. jarod reads the play really well and jake cannot make the block. i'll give a neutral play here because even though he could've been faster, mayo's read and reaction was just too fast for jake's feet. Neutral play.
3&3(12:39)Run. Toss right side. Jake blocks seymour. nothing much to it becuase it was backside but you gotta love the quick feet off the snap and during the whole play, following and blocking the patriot defender who was running lateraly towards the ball carrier.
-------------------------
1&10(10:42)Run. Jake DOMINATES seymour, pushing him back 4-5 yards. very very good play.
1&10(10:10)Run. Jake faces fresh legs, #58. Good block driving him initially but he didn't sustain it. 58 made the tackle in pursuit, but it was after ronnie made a 8yard gain so i have to give him a good play grade even though he didn't finish his block.
2&1(9:15)Run. #58 again. Jake makes a very good block driving him back and allowing a first down, good play.
1&10(8:25)Run. Jake blocks green on the backside, nothing much, still got to appreciate the good block and effort. good play.
2&10(7:43)Run. jake blocks seymour and wins another battle. Clearly, this kid is in good shape, being able to pound a mutli-probowler from the 1st to the 4th quarter. good play.
3&7(6:55)Run. The whole line collapse but Jake. Ronnie rushes behing him for little gain. I'll have to give jake a good grade because it was poor execution around him that made that a bad play. Good play for jake.
------------------------------
1&10(3:04)Run. Jake is on the backside of the play again, makes his block on green. good play.
2&8(2:20)Run. Jake obviously busts his assignment, he looks lost as he blocks no one. Fasano is alone blocking a lineman to his left... even though it's the end of the game, you gotta make those blocks big fella. bad play.
3&9(2:00)Run. Jake blocks and whiffs on green, jake looks tired, bored or not concentrated... not sure but the last two plays were u-g-l-y
Conclusion of 2nd half:
24/31 play are good ones, 4/31 being neutral and 3 being bad... of those 3, two came late towards the end of the game so it's up to you to judge if they really mattered...
CONCLUSION:
46/57 good plays (80.7%)
6/57 neutral plays (10.5%)
5/57 bad plays (8.8%)
1 bad play turned out to be a touchdown and two others were pretty late at the very end of the game... in my mind, he busted two plays where his mis-play had an impact on the game . Good game, very good game for a rookie facing vrabel, thomas, seymour, green and warren...
-i was pleasantly surprised by his strenght and his effort. THe guy is a player, he likes what he does and he usually is good at it.
-my only negative out of his game is his footwork, and even there i couldn't say i was disapointed because he actually showed me better footwork i was expecting.
overrall, in my opinion, he definitely played like a first overrall pick.
