[h=1]With help from Matt Darr, he looks to justify it. [/h]

This is probably the most important offseason of Jakeem Grant’s career. CHARLES TRAINOR JR ctrainor@miamiherald.com

Jakeem Grant needs to catch the ball better in 2017.
He knows that. The coaching staff has said so, publicly and privately.
But here’s what else the organization has told the second-year speedster: We believe in you, and have confidence that you can be an excellent returner. Now go do it.
Grant has gotten the message.
That’s why he’s dedicated his winter vacation to his craft.
And that’s why he reached out to friend and teammate Matt Darr and invited him to West Texas this past weekend.
Texas Tech — Grant’s alma mater — allowed the two Dolphins specialists to work out at Jones AT&T Stadium.

I really doubt he makes the team if he cant hold on to the ball.

it will be up to him, fumbleitis will put you out of this league faster than a fielding a high punt.

Too early to give up on him, but I agree if he continues to muff the punts/kick-offs then despite his speed he is a liability.

What if the glass is half full for Grant and he breaks out? Its certainly possible.

This guy is no joke. If he can get the drops under control, which evidently is his major focus this offseason, he can be an amazing special teamer at the very least.

The guy has speed and can make moves, there's no doubting that. During his pro day he was rumored to be clocked at 4.1 in the 40, but he is positively, at the very least, a sub 4.4 runner (actually, around 4.3). I'd love to see him come out after a (very) rough rookie season and start being the great returner he should be. His highlights show some of what he's capable of:

He's QUICK too. Damm near uncatchably quick in open field.

He was doomed the minute he chose that number.

He fumbles way to often. He drops catches. He rarely gets the opportunity to work himself free on PR because the gunners get right up on punts. 3/4 of kickoffs are touched back.

So, for the handful of kickoffs over a season that can be run back and the even fewer number of punts with enough space in front, and where he doesn't drop it and where he doesn't get drilled by the first tackler.... theres a chance he might return one for some distance because he is fast.

Sounds like a guy you really want to keep a roster spot for in your team at all cost. Listen I'm all for being explosive in all phases of the game but Grant is too fumble prone and too small to be able to rely on to convert the tiny number of chances teams get to return an explosive play.

Cut Grant, put Drake in and stop giving Rizzi the power to stock the roster with the Thomas's, Aikens', Paysingers, Grants of the world who will never be reliable guys for regular play. Just because Rizzi is Associate Assistant Vice Head of General Coaching Administration or whatever, doesn't mean he gets to have a ton of shiny ST toys that aren't productive in other ways.

fielding punts and kicks is something you can work on....it's not rocket science.

if he puts in the work he can take a big step forward...

I think he will improve. They wont give up on him yet.

I will saying curing the "drops" is one of the hardest things to improve on. Its all mental, the more you work at it, the more you overthink it, and the more you will drop.

Has to be a confidence issue. And the fact catching is just natural to some people more than others. Cant fight the ball.
