Jake's Meanness: A Fallacy

He's going to be a great leader for our O-line over the next 10 years.

Over the next 10 years our O-line will be 10X better than the last 10 years. Book it.

great article, and it does sound like Jake's got a good head on his shoulders, and like all the rest of you,i hope he becomes a dominating LT for the next 10 years or so with us.

Totally agree, Beck's blindside will be protected for the next 10 years. :woot:

I think a player's so called 'mean streak' is terribly overrated. Normally it just means they're a bit of an imbecile with a bad temper and are occasionally violent. An intelligent, focused, determined and confident player who is athletic and well versed in the skills required of their position is what any team should want, not some idiot who is likely to get himself ejected from a game or generally give up stupid penalties. Thankfully that seems to be a closer description of Jake Long than 'mean'. Well, from the little I've read about him anyway.

As this positive thread's OP I resent anyone trying to hijack its theme to turn it into a Bash thread - plenty of other ones for THAT to show what a team player you really are. So please refrain...or risk this guy paying a visit with canoles in hand.

.......what I and others have been preaching for a while now.....Hah!!!!....just kidding......sort of.

Great article on Jake the solid citizen and generally nice kid growing up. Personally don't care whether he's mean on the field or not.. just so long as he takes care of business.

This is the way You want your players to be. Mean tough Son-of-a-beach guys on the field, but Good Citizens and nice guys off of it.

This guy has class and will be one hell of a representative for the Miami Dolphins. We are lucky to have Parcells & Co. running this team.

Somebody needs to tell Jake Long that his meaness is a fallacy.

Long said he's glad he'll be reporting to training camp on time, because he'll need to adjust to the faster speed of the NFL game.

Temperament won't be an issue, he said.

"I'm mean on the field," he said. "I'm a very nice guy off the field. When I buckle up that helmet, I change. It's football mode. I go out there and try to bury the guy and make sure they don't touch the quarterback or running back."

Jake does seem like a nice guy, but that shouldn't prevent him from being an outstanding tackle. Tackles, unlike DE and OLB, aren't looking to rip off QB's heads--they're there to protect QB's and make holes for RB's. At most, the most violent we'll see them be is when they try to flatten guys to keep them out of the play. As nice as Jake is, this shouldn't be a problem for him. He appears strong enough to backpeddle players without engaging maximum strength.
