Jamar Taylor

That was a pretty good write up. Their numbers do seem out there from time to time, but that clears the water a little bit.

These articles from PFF explaining why their grades are so much better reminds me of this from Tywin Lannister: Any man who must say, "I am the king" is no true king.

I am by no means a rah rah PFF guy…but nowhere do they state their grades are better. They just explain why their grades might not coincide with the typical stat sheet. Which really if you think about it makes plenty of sense. Perfect example is the Will Davis play in that article…he gets burned but the ball is overthrown. Looks real shiny on the stat sheet but its a poor play.
Its not the be all end all…you have to put PFF together with the stats and most importantly with what you see. But for people who don't actually analyze film…which is the VAST majority…Id say their take is probably much more accurate.

Anyways its all a judgement call. If James gets beat but Tannehill gets the throw off is that a negative play…or did he do his job well enough to say its good? Thats the kind of stuff where people disagree…which is completely acceptable. Their will be discrepancies like that..and for those who break down the games and disagree thats great…makes for good discussion. Im just saying for the vast majority of people who just watch the game as its played its a very good barometer of how players actually faired.

I believe coaches do see those as negative plays, same as a DB getting beat on an incompletion, and things they will work on.

Aside from that, I have seen Tannehill getting rid of the ball quicker, and even throwing it away, which I have not seen since the Pitt game. IMO, he has saved himself at least 2-3 sacks this preseason.

PFF can say what they want but Taylor struggling with grocery boys is not worthy of a high grade.

And here I thought you would be happy that they answered your question on Taylor from the other thread. Oh well, there is just no pleasing some people.

Its not about pleasing me , don't take it personal. I just don't agree with their rating of taylor from the game. We could have ten people watch the game and those ten people are not going to be uniform in their assessment.

I don't mind if people here disagree with pff's gfades, but for once can someone here give a reason why?

Seriously, it's a joke how many people here talk down on pff, and cant even begin to say why they disagree. I don't even think most of them even take the time to read how they develope there grades.

Watching the game is one thing. Watching every play a player makes on tape is quite another. PFF looks at individual play, and says if it was a win, loss or draw. I have to believe that any knowledgeable fan can do the same, with a possible difference on the degree of the win or loss.

I have to agree. I've seen many a post on how PFF sucks, is a joke, etc. I've seen very few who give a reason as to why. Some say you have to trust your eyeballs but, never say what their eyeballs have seen to dispute what PFF has said.

Many disagree with everyone, and offer no reason as to why. I guess it's just fun for some to disagree for something to do. :)

I don't think there would be as much issue with Pro Football Focus if their grading system were different, let's say like the quarterback rating. Something in the 60s may be terrible but at least it's a robust number. Instead, PFF throws you on either side of absolute zero. I like that approach but it's far different than the sports stats office I worked at years ago, and I can see why it inspires so much debate and ridicule. People will be defensive upon seeing a negative number for a player they like, or someone they subjectively viewed as having an effective game. And the opposite is true. If one guy were rated 56 and the other 78 it probably would lead to greater acceptance, a relative score like a test result from school.

Regarding Jamar Taylor and Will Davis, there's no question that Taylor needs to be better when the ball arrives because he seldom manages to get the jump on the receiver. He's absorbing while Davis is often creating. The danger with Davis is how many big plays he'll surrender if he takes the same approach against every quarterback and every receiver instead of making concessions based on caliber. Davis is the more interesting player but I'll be scared if he plays a prominent role against the best quarterbacks. They will be licking their chops, especially given the level of our safety play downfield.

Last time I checked PFF was using people's eyeballs to decide what happens on plays. Im pretty sure the computer doesn't do it by themselves.
