James Casey - Tight End/Wildcat QB
In 2007, he played 7 different positions... in ONE game!
DE, S, QB, WR, RB, TE, FB

First Team All-Conference USA
Second Team All-American Academic Honors
104 Receptions in '08- second in the nation
Primary player in Rice's Wildcat-ran offense

Exciting player to watch who loves to make guys miss and get huge yac

7th Round pick of the Chicago White Sox

Forget Vick or Pat White who would be in the game on only a couple of plays a game. Casey is a bona-fide top notch TE PLUS he plays the QB position in the wildcat. Watch a Rice game from last year. the Man was a site to see. a Man among boys

I like Casey a lot. But if you subtract the wildcat intangibles and look for the best pure TE in this draft, Chase Coffman is better. He is the quintessential Parcells tight end.

I made this post in another thread:

Some people said the same thing about Jason Witten, who not coincidentally was drafted in the 3rd round. IMO Coffman will be the best TE coming out of this draft. If the dolphins can get Coffman in the late third or early 4th, it will be a damn fine pick. Casey is another guy I like, but because he is versatile and can be a very good player for what we like to do (wildcat). But strictly as a tight end, Coffman is it.

Chase Coffman has the best hands in the draft. He has the best catching radius of any tight end.. He is 6'6, is extremely smart and knows all the nuances of the game (knows coverages and knows how to gain separation from them). He looks like the quintessential Parcells tight end (tough, smart, disciplined, and of yeah, the best hands in the draft, plays through injury as he did multiple times in college so he doesn't mind pain). He has the frame to get bigger/stronger and can be an effective blocker, he certainly doesn't mind blocking and welcomes it.

There is no other tight end in the draft that can come close to sniffing Coffman's numbers.

50GP, 247 catches, 2,659 yards, 30 TDs

I am hoping his injury drops Coffman to our 4th round selection. He could drop due to his injury like Merling dropped because of a late injury (but I wouldn't chance it and would be happy to pick him in the 3rd round). And if we get Coffman, he will be a great in this league. He just has that demeanor on the field that speaks greatness at the NFL level. He has that natural "it" factor that you just can't teach. And Coffman has it, in spades.

Coffman is everything this regime has preached in what they look for in a player. He is Tough, smart, disciplined. He is not a me-first player, he is a total team guy.. The regime has stated that they don't like one year wonders and look for players who have been productive for awhile, and show improvement every year. They also stated that they want much bigger players, well Coffman is 6'6 and has the frame to pack on some muscle. Coffman fits every mold and every single attribute this regime looks for to a tee.

well from a number perspectives, yes, coffman is elite. but we all know missouri ran a pass-happy scheme in which he and martin rucker both performed well in. The thing I like about Casey is that he carried that team, literally on his back at times. Coffman had elite talent around him and as far as the "best hands" Casey had the second most receptions this year and isn't known to drop balls. Both these guys can add mass to get that thicker frame Parcells will want to help in blocking assignments but what separates the two for me is Caseys pure athleticism, his agility to make guys miss in the open field. And then in the wildcat, he'll pound you down (with the option to throw with his adequate throwing arm at his disposal).. hes a perfect fit for miami as a later round..but I do like Coffman a lot as well, just seems like a system guy and with Casey, he was the system.

I wouldn't mind either player. I really like both players. But I believe Coffman can be an elite NFL TE.

The good thing about Casey is that you can have two roster spots with one guy. Maybe even more, allowing you to add another player to your roster. Hell the guy was even the placeholder for their kicker.

Another thing to consider is that you will likely have to spend a 2nd rounder on Casey. I have seen him climbing up the draft boards as of late.. He's REALLY climbing, and he's climbing well into the 2nd round.

Even our friends at Universal Draft have Casey going at #47 in the 2nd round to the Pats.

So he's not really a darkhorse player at all. New England is intrigued with him and may select him with one of their 3 second round picks. I see a guy like him thriving in their system. A lot of teams are very intrigued with him.

So the question is, do you spend your #44 on Casey ? Or spend your #87/#108 on Coffman ? These are the types of decisions FO's have to make.

i like shawn nelson however he'll be gone before our 3rd rounder. TE is not a round 1-2 need. I'd recommend the best TE available in the 4th or 5th.
Cornelious Ingram is ballin, Beckum all could be there.. I know cook/casey/nelson are rated higher than 4th round so i dont think we draft one of these guys. I know fasano is in a contract year, and i think Martin and Haynos are too. We will draft someone, but where?

Coffman. He could be a great value and would fit our team, but brandon Pettigrew is the best TE of this class.

I would also not mind taking Jared Cook and using him as a WR, especially seeing as he has a lot of experience at WR.
