If there were any doubts of Jarrad Davis’ athleticism entering the pre-draft process, those can now be put to rest. The former Gator linebacker put on quite the show Tuesday during Florida’s Pro Day event, which had to help his stock moving forward as the draft inches closer and closer.

Perhaps the most impressive feat of the day for Davis was his incredible 38.5-inch vertical. To put that into perspective, only four defensive backs were able to top that number at the latest NFL combine. Considering Davis is able to jump that high despite his 238-pound frame is remarkable.

I'm still thinking Jarrad Davis or Forrest Lamp in round 1, can't go wrong with either.

Jim at 22 Miami is going to have a lot of talent to choose from. You draft lamp and the left side is set for 8 yrs. you go Davis and our lb improves big time. If you go fs like a Buddha baker, it improves our secondary. Sooo many choices. I wanted baker and Davis. I can dream.

I know they like Jarrad Davis but I think reality says he came off the table when they signed Lawrence Timmons. I think a speed linebacker is still on the table if they don't sign Zach Brown. I've been trying to tell people that Davis is fast, and will test out better than they think (his NFLDS forty estimate was 4.78 and I knew that just wasn't going to be the case). I see speed. I see explosiveness. I see the ability to cover big time athletes up the middle (see: Vanderbilt). But is he what I would consider to be a "speed linebacker"? I'm not so sure I'd classify him there, in with the Haason Reddicks and Jabrill Peppers's of the world. Darron Lee is an example from a previous draft. Jatavis Brown.

That's what Miami acquired in Deon Lacey, and it's what they brought up to the roster from the practice squad in Brandon Watts. But they don't really know that either guy can cut it in the NFL, so I think they'd like to add one more that has a better reliability factor, and that's where I think Zach Brown, Mychal Kendricks (via trade), Justin Durant, and perhaps DeAndre Levy come in. Zach Brown, Mychal Kendricks, and Justin Durant are speed linebackers. That's what they were coming out, it's part of their identity. Levy is a stretch but the familiarity factor between he and Matt Burke is such an x-factor in this.

Who are the "speed linebackers" we could draft? To me it starts with Haason Reddick and Jabrill Peppers although if you want Jabrill as a straight up safety you can do that too. Duke Riley plays like a speed linebacker. I don't know if he tests like one but he plays like one. Honestly some are considering Takkarist McKinley as one of those just like Reddick, and I could see it. Matt Milano plays like a speed linebacker but doesn't test like one and that's a problem. Dylan Cole definitely fits. I would like to see how Jamal Marcus of Akron would test, as his speed looks the part on film at times, but that's subject to film and competition quality stuff. Paul Magloire plays like one, and supposedly he ran 4.55 recently which is a good testing number for him.

I don't mean to say that Jarrad Davis isn't as fast as some of these guys. He is. But I don't know that he plays like a runningbacker speed linebacker type. They would be ALL OVER him if he fell to 54 (depending on if someone else salivating fell that far). But they'd have to take him at 22 and I think they may have other ideas.

He's one of my favorites from this draft.

Like others have said, lots of ways Miami can go. I wonder which player pushes the needle the most, at least in terms of the first year? Is it someone who can get consistent pressure on the quarterback (Harris, Tim Williams etc.), a safety like Baker, an elite tight end in Gase's system?

CK everyone has been talking about LB's but you are the first that I've seen that have put the word "speed" in front of the word LB. That is exactly what we need....speed LB's like the Seahawks, the Falcons, etc...these guys have to be able to move. That is why I was kind of disappointed that we still wanted Misi on the team. I saw the stat where our run defense was much better with Misi in the game...however, I just want the team to move in another direction....

I don't think Misi is a bad player, he just isn't a playmaker. I'd love to pick up Jarrad (or Reddick).

The defense is a little bit old in spots and mostly pretty slow. This draft should be about adding a ton of speed to the defense. I'm all for Reddick or McKinley or maybe Zack Cunningham. Beyond that I'd draft a very fast, hard hitting Safety, an enforcer type. Round 3 is where we draft some o-line, after that more defense with an emphasis on speed, health and physicality.

I think if you're focusing on Koa Misi then you're focusing on the wrong things. The linebackers of this team are Kiko Alonso and Lawrence Timmons. You have to focus on them.

There is the potential for Koa Misi to take some snaps as the third linebacker. Miami ends up with more linebacker snaps than most because they seem allergic to true dime packages. Half of NFL teams use dime packages liberally, a fifth all the way up to a third or in KC's case nearly half of the time. Miami doesn't use dime at all. So they've got at least two linebackers on the field at all times, and since Miami goes into base about a third of the time, that means they're pretty linebacker-centric for a 4-3 team.

In that way if Miami wanted to go ahead and sign a Zach Brown, or if they'd wanted to go BIG and go after Dont'a Hightower, in ADDITION to Lawrence Timmons and Kiko Alonso, they could've justified it. Just make some minor adjustments to rotation and each guy could get 900 snaps.

As things stand we're looking like we'll be more straight ahead Alonso/Timmons on every snap, with Koa Misi coming onto the field maybe a third of the time. In that vein, are you really going to look at that dude that comes on a third of the time and say, rawr rawr rawr you suck overpaid not playmaker etc etc?

That's why I say you're focusing on the wrong thing if you're looking at Koa Misi. He's a good backup, a good rotational guy. There are things he can do that give the defense multiplicity (e.g. playing 3-4 OLB, which he used to do here in Miami the first couple years he was drafted). He's a standout run defender, I don't care who comes out of where trying to tell me differently.

How long is Lawrence Timmons going to be here? That's one question, one reason why you'd ultimately add a Jarrad Davis. You say OK, even as a rookie I'm going to get Jarrad Davis on the field nearly as much as Kiko and Timmons, relegating Koa Misi to a backup position (his salary adjustment makes him little more than a Spencer Paysinger in terms of salary fit), and then long term you say Timmons will be off the roster by 2019 and Jarrad Davis is the man pairing with Kiko Alonso from then on.

That's totally defensible. I could dig that.

Will it be the top idea in the room when they're picking at 22 overall? I'm not so sure about that.

I definitely like the sound of that plan ck, and honestly it doesn't HAVE to be Davis for me, I just want a young lb back there with potential down the road.

CK -- I get where you're going with the linebackers. Do you think it's either DE or Safety as the top pick? Can we pretty much expect maybe a mid rounder at linebacker?

How come no love for the other florida linebacker Alex Anzalone? Miami needs to roll the dice on this kid as long as they believe he can move on from his shoulder issues. That kid can be as good as he wants to.
