I'm a huge Jarvis Landry fan. However, I notice that in each of the 3 preseason games he has dropped the ball at least once. For his first 2 seasons this was an extremely rare event. Jarvis was as safe as they come but frankly I'm surprised by some of his drops. What do you think is the problem?

I noticed that his drop from last night was because he was trying to run before securing the football first. Mental issue, 100%. Jarvis sometimes tries to do "too much" imo, and this was an example of that. It was an easy catch and he was probably already thinking about making a play before he even caught the ball.

He just needs to focus. Not worried about it. For now...

Actually started in camp. Everyone is so fixated on grant and cameron dropping balls but i think landry is leading in that category. Odd, as the guy has been known for not dropping balls. The dolphins curse has bitten poor jarvis!!

Landry's usage last year was the definition of a gadget player. Schemed open on 27 of 53 catchable targets so far.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 17
Intermediate game is basically non-existent.
Pretty much every downfield route is a contested catch because he can't get off aggressive coverage.
Also, this is a MAJOR problem when you're not good at contested catches.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 17
First two questions I ask with WR prospects. Can he separate? Can he win at catch point? If answer is no to both. What's the point?

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 17
Schemed open = screen, routes behind LOS, backfield, release from stack, pick plays, option throws.

110+ catches is a big deal to a lot of people and Big Media loves selling him across from Beckham.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
That route should be angled more so you can protect the ball. Going towards goalpost just gives DB opportunity to undercut.
To get the ball to Landry there you need to loft it or rifle it into a window that is barely bigger than the ball. That's on the WR.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
Average depth of target on catchable targets for Jarvis Landry last year: 5.9 yards.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
Landry was schemed open on 52 of his 125 catchable targets and had 14 Failed Receptions. He beat press-man just 17 times.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
Which is to say, it's going to be interesting to see how Gase uses him. Will he thrive in a more traditional role? I have my doubts.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
Landry had 23 receptions he caught at or behind the LOS. He had 56 that were caught five or fewer yards downfield.

Landry would actually be an interesting running back convert though. Skill set more natural for position.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
I get the "Can't blame him for only doing what he's told/beating what's in front of him" retort a lot. The framing of that confuses me.
Considering who you beat or how you do it has nothing to do with blaming or taking credit away. It's actually the opposite.
It's not giving someone credit for something they didn't do. Can't compare a guy to superstars if superstars have to do more.

Cian Fahey ‏@Cianaf Aug 18
Based on what Gase did last year, I suspect Landry will catch 20-25 screen passes but the rest of the scheming will be at a minimum.

I can't take you seriously if you're suggesting his momentum pushed him that way or it was a smart move to try and get out of bounds.

Landry definitely was schemed open under lazor but so what...faheys definitely being rediculous here...you just dont want him to be the focal point

The east west stuff annoys when he leaves yards on the field...yep

Not sure why faheys banging a inadvertent pick play for a wr...everyone uses them...new england lives off them

First cut up landry wins inside tanny has to get rid of it cause of the clean blitzer (essentially the hot) and the db showing good awareness of where he is on the field undercuts it...thats more a good play by the db than anything else...he knows he doesnt have to worry about over the top given the short field and drives out of the cut on the route from behind

And he also knows the ball must come out quick cause of the blitzers...the rb must pick up the inside immediate threat leaving the wide rusher clean to the qb

After Cameron, Landry is definitely dropping the 2nd most balls. But at least he is catching some too. Even DVP dropped a few ... it's been shockingly poor hands from our WR/TE corps built around one thing ... good hands.

IMHO, they all need more meaningful practice. This is yet another result of not enough padded practices. It's sloppy. The QB should be expected to throw at full velocity ... it's a football advantage. The receivers simply need to catch it at that velocity. If they can't ... then they're not NFL caliber receivers. Simple as that. If we had more of the old practices where people could hit, and more padded practices and real meaningful competition to practice, we could get these guys game-ready. As it is ... it looks like a dress rehearsal for a play ... not a winning competition. First the defensive guys who had no recent experience tackling because of the limitation on padded practices, now it's the receiving corps not used to diving and reeling in bullets while getting contact from competitive DB's.

Guys, I don't care what the rule is ... find a way to simulate game situations, because this is sloppy.

I cannot open or see the Twitter video's above. Do I need a Twitter account to see the video's.
When I click on the video start arrow, I get "this browser does not support video playback". I'm running Firefox with Ad Blocker and can see other video's in other formats. YouTube is a good example. Works just fine. Seems its just Twitter.

Thanks John

The whole receiving corp is having problems catching the football, not just Landry. One thing I dont like about Landry is his on field discipline, he definitely needs to control his emotions and stop getting 10+ yards penalties... We dont have an OL capable of converting 3rd downs when we get behind the sticks...

I noticed he actually posturing his body to run before he catches even when he does make the catch.

And thats a great skill to have IMO, you can tell its Landry catching the ball just by the way he's already out of his route momentum into where he wants to go with the ball... Its a very hard thing to master while limiting drop rate... Landry's a very hard worker so Im not to worried just yet...

Didn't he make some like slick one handed catch on a swing pass early, I am not worried. He was to electrify and doesn't have anything elite like Parker (athleticism and size) or Stills (speed) to make big plays so he might just be trying to do to much. He will settle in once the season comes, he is our middle of the field guy since Cameron cant seem to either get open or hang on to the ball.

His resume in high school, college, and two seasons in the NFL trumps the small window of training camp and 3 preseason games.
