Dolphins' Allen keeping egg off his face
Jason Allen's offseason training regimen includes catching eggs, a household tradition that helped him become a star in college.

Dolphins cornerback poses after an interception against the Bears last season at Chicago.Dolphins defensive back Jason Allen returned home to Muscle Shoals, Ala., this offseason and got back to basics. He caught eggs.

The art of catching raw eggs under pressure is the true test of poise, athleticism and quickness in the Allen household.

BAD MOVE

In hindsight, Allen's move to safety might have been ill-conceived. It was made despite these facts:

• Allen had completed the switch back to cornerback for his senior season at Tennessee.

• Allen played just one season at safety, and did so only because the team was weak at the position.

• Allen missed most of his rookie training camp (15 practices) while his agent held out for more guaranteed money.

Allen said his time away from training camp was detrimental to his learning curve. He never had time to master the subtleties of a complicated zone-coverage system for which he was relied upon to call the reads and set the defenses. Exacerbating the problem, Saban tinkered with the secondary throughout the season

My favorite paragraph:

"He also is finished being a safety. Upon arriving in South Florida, one of the first things new Dolphins coach Cam Cameron did was move Allen back to cornerback. When asked why last week, Cameron offered a deadpan response.
''[Allen] was a cornerback in college,'' Cameron said."

Gotta love the logic in that.

Cam is getting pretty good at exposing the "DUH Factor" lately.

Playing Corner in NFL is harder than safety a reason most older corner play safety ....

He is going to get lit up like a christmas tree this year without safety help.

the reason old corners move to safety is because they don't need to run as much and gives less pressure to their legs. Thats not really a problem for Allen at this point.

They move the older CBs back to safety because they lost a step and can no longer keep in stride with the younger, faster WRs. Jason Allen is the second or third fastest dolphin on the roster. Moving back to CB which will eliminate the guess-work of playing a position (safety) he had little experience with should help him out a lot. I agree safety is a concern, but judging by Allen's comments, it looks like the coverage scheme is changing this year. It sounds like it is less complicated than Saban's scheme, so hopefully this will work for us. Most coverages are blown because of confusion, if we can eliminate that, then we should be fine.

The first problem I have with this article is that the holdout last year for Allen didn't involve more guaranteed money, it actually involved the length of contract. His agent wanted a 5 year deal whereas The Dolphins wanted a 6 year deal.

As for Allen, it got so bad that at one point he was relegated to special teams.

Him being relegated to special teams implies that at one point during the season he was an active contributor to something other than special teams, which I don't believe was the case. He was primarily a special teamer all last year with some spot duty later in the season!

As he said earlier in the off season...he was thinking too much on the field and not reacting. I hope with good film study, a less complicated defense, more consistent calls being made that Allen will have a very good year at corner back.
I do wonder how much Dom Caper's input was involved with Cam moving him to cornerback?

Actually it was. They were fine with a 6 year deal as long as the guarenteed money was reasonable. Sad thing is he held out 15 days and still ended up with a contract that's subpar for his draft spot.

Clueless. In Saban's defense the safety makes all the calls and adjustments. At corner you don't have to think about that. You obviously didn't watch much of Allen at all. It wasn't his ability that was holding him back it was the mental part. He was outta position a lot. However, when he wasn't he showed he can blanket his guy and lay the wood.

It is a time-honored tradition that Allen has been playing with his mother, Cynthia Allen, since he was young. And dropping an egg on her furniture could draw a penalty worse than a flag.

''It's to see how good his hands are and his reaction time -- and that's my good sofa now,'' Cynthia Allen said. ``He better catch that egg every time because if it gets on my furniture, he don't want the ultimate football player on him. I'll tackle everybody.''

What Mom do you know who throws raw eggs at her son to improve his reaction time and eye hand coordination?

Sounds like some Ninja training.

She was gooming an athlete I guess.

Way to go Ma

Playing Safety required alot of mental aspect i understand but my point is he has been a CB in college and the trainsition to covering in NFL takes time.Every one here is expect him to step in and play like champ.Hell now 2nd or 3rd year as a CB is when players start to adapt.Without safety help his first year as a CB is going to be tough.

Actually playing corner is one of the easiest positions to play on defense. For the most part, you either have to only worry about covering your man or playing an area of the field. You're not thinking as much, have less responsibilities and can rely on your natural abilities to get the job done.

With the secondary coverage schemes being simplified this year, there will be less mental mistakes being made. Add the fact that he already has one year in the NFL, adapting to the speed of the game will not be a factor.
