Jason Allen/Nick Saban after practice comments

Why didn't they just cut Josh Shaw as usual? Poor Josh... He has been cut and re-hired 456 times.

My guess is that Poole's injury is fairly serious. I believe that if Poole clears waivers he can't play for us this season. If we're hoping to bring him back on IR for the year then we think he can recover. I hope so. He's a guy that's shown starter ability it's a shame to have that derailed by injury.

Yeah and most noteabley so that game in 2004 against Cincinnati when he matched up against Chad Johnson and shut him down. I was really excited for Poole this season. It's a shame that injuries are killing him.

I have two problems...if their intention is to bring Will back. The problems might have easy answers, I dunno. I'm shooting from the hip.

One, he won't be practicing with us for the rest of training camp or even be able to get into the playbook or film room. If we buy him back after Week 10, what good is he to us? Maybe a little more healthy, but still "behind" as Saban called it before.

Two, why waive him now, when plenty of other teams have plenty of room to claim him off waivers and take a look at him? Teams get to roster like 80 players right now or something. They only need cut the Eric Kimbles of the world to claim Poole and get a look at him. If you cut him on the eve of final cut dates (or even initial cut dates) then teams dont have the roster room to claim someone just to take a look at him.

I agree...I read it as being "the nice thing to say".

Teams are usually hesitant to pick up injured players. I think that's what Saban is gambling on. This only makes sense if the injury is signicant enough that he is likely to miss the whole year. That's why we can afford to cut him now b/c he was probably going to end up on IR anyways.

any chance or concern that one of our opponents on the regular season schedule would pick him up just to pick his brain?

I have to agree with CK on this. It seems like an awful gamble on our part to waive him this early, rather than later when we have to. Either he's hurt pretty bad and other teams wouldn't touch him, or Nick is wanting as many healthy bodies competing in that spot as possible and hoping he can still get Poole back. I was also really looking forward to Poole possibly showing us what he could do. But it makes you wonder if he's one of those cursed players coming out of college that get injured and really come back healthy ? We've had our share of those players in the past and I wonder if they just are not going to sit around and wait for those guys to come around. It would be nice to give him one more shot at it, but I'm not sure he'll clear and make it back to us. We could hope. I also am getting a little nervous about our CB's with this setback. We better be getting a fair amount of pressure on the QB, because our relatively inexperienced corners won't be able to keep coverage for a long time.

I know one thing though, Will Poole = Eddie Moore comparisons just got a whole lot more accurate.

You've gotta figure that from what they see healthwise, he isnt going to be ready to play this season and no teams will claim him. So we clear a roster spot temporarily and have a very minimal risk of losing him. It is important to have as many healthy bodies out there as possible early in camp.

The other reason could be that they're trying to do him a favor. If there's a team willing to try to get him up to speed and playing this year, then we don't want to stand in his way since we've clearly decided that he won't be playing this season. JUst a thought.
