What's everyone's assessment of Jason Allen coming out of mini-camp and overall? I heard conflicting reports (the comments that he kept getting beat really scared me), and I also realize that you can't make too much of a mini-camp this early.

Here's my take:

Positives
Has the physical tools and talent
Has good speed
Is versatile
Comes from a top school (SEC)
Was desired by Saban (who theoretically knows DB's) Has a year under his belt (albeit a little rocky)

Questions
Instincts - I don't have a feel for this one with him

Ball skills - Haven't seen/heard good things yet

Intelligence - Tough system last year, but he really seemed lost and then you hear some rumors it's an issue. And how much intelligence does it take to just cover and make a play on the ball?

Speed at which he's learning and progressing - I'd expect him to be flashing more talent and/or consistency at mini-camp after a full year. Didn't Madison and Surtain show more sooner?

Bottom Line

I expect a 16th pick CB to be performing at a high level by early in season two, not fighting for nickel or dime status. That would be a major disappointment to me.

All this leaves me wondering if after a full training camp this year the light will be coming on and he'll be on his way to greatness, or whether he just doesn't have the intangibles and we'll be crying over another 1st round bust.

What is your gut or analysis telling you? Does he lack confidence or intelligence, or am I over-reacting and he could blossom over the course of a full camp? Do you feel it's just a matter of time for him or do you get that sinking feeling or somewhere in between? Love to hear any and all opinions.

He's not finishing plays. The good news is that he's sticking to the receivers and not being outrun or outquicked (except by Ginn, apparently). What I saw in camp was a big, fast, cat quick CB who seemed to be in position to make plays but wasn't making enough of them. Give him a little time- he's just transitioning back to CB. But know that he is a top notch athlete- I really enjoy watching him play, and more importantly I think that he can become a really good CB for us. Will Allen and Jason Allen- great athletes, way superior to Travis Daniels in that regard.

It's early- if Allen is still giving up big plays by the time that the preseason is over, I'll start to get very worried then.

Bro'. Just chill. They haven't even put pads on yet. JA has all the tools and the desire. Let him get the system under his belt before raising questions about his overall worth. And besides, why do you care if it takes him another year to be good? We're not winning the Super Bowl this year. Let him mature and peak with the rest of the young players on the team so that in two or three years from now, we're competing at a high level.

I beg to differ, Surtain was horrendous in his first training camp and very average in his first season. Then in his second campaign he really came on.

Surtain did struggle during the 1998 preseason, but performed very well as a nickel back during the 1998 regular season prompting Jimmy Johnson to proclaim he would be a better corner when it's said and done than Sam Madison.

Didn't that also prompt the release of Terrell Buckley, only to see him be re-signed to play nickel?

sounds like he is struggling so far in these early work outs, which isnt good but not particularly bad either, he better pick up this year or he could well be released. i hope that isnt the case.

I'm discouraged hearing he got dragged up and down the field this weekend but still anxious to see him look better when pads come on and he's allowed to be a little more physical.

I think it's not fair to teach a guy to play one position all year, have him switch positions the next and for us to expect him to be the best corner or anything close to it on the team at this point in the year.

Maybe they should go hard after Oliver in the supplemental draft. We need at least one elite corner.

Not to say Oliver is anything yet, but he may be worth a shot.
