You heard it from me first. Jason Allen this weekend attended the auction to sell of the possessions of disgraced fund manager Kirk Wright in Atlanta, GA and he plunked down a $900,000 bid on Kirk Wright's mansion in Marietta, GA. He also had to pay a $91,000 buyer's premium on the sale.
I have no idea where he got the money, but he wrote a check for it on the spot.
I know this because I too was in Atlanta this weekend.
Wright founded International Management Associates, LLC, a hedge fund which had at one point about $185 million in assets under management. That entire amount had been dissipated under Wright's management.
He took many NFL players for a ride with the fund, too. There were a lot of high profile NFL investors who got taken in by Wright and lost a significant amount of money. The original fraud arrest was specifically related to a financial statement that Wright mailed to Steve Atwater, former safety for the Broncos, which misrepresented the amount of Atwater's assets under management. Other high profile players include Terrell Davis, Blaine Bishop, and Rod Smith.
The auction was to try and raise money to give back to the investors that lost their shirts.
It's a sweet mansion too, lemme tell ya. I saw some pictures of it. Supposedly, Allen had no idea what Kirk Wright did or any of the story behind the mansion.
I knew Allen was a nice dude...but I didn't know he was that smart. He's going to make a killing on that place in a few years.
But where'd he get the money? I don't think his family is rich, and we all know the dude isn't signed yet. Did his agent loan it to him? Perhaps a bank loaned him the money, knowing the kind of terms on the contract he's about to sign?
Oh well. I thought I'd share it with you guys first before the local press gets wind of it.
